This episode barely has zombies and it delivers! Season 1 is unique with stellar acting, great story telling , engaging dialogues, etc. Season 1 is a masterpiece!
Your view on Shane is one I don’t hear often but is one I agree with! Shane is built for this world his instincts are correct Jon Bernthal portrays him excellently

That Shane flashback at the beginning really changed my opinion on Shane when I first saw it. He really tried to save Rick, he did everything he could there and because of the chaos of it all he really did think Rick was dead, and from there he went to save Ricks family. He really was a quality dude.
By leaving Rick behind he saved Rick , himself, Carl and Lori. Had he tried to carry Rick out of the hospital, it's very likely the army would have shot them both.

[No spoilers!] I always really liked this finale and am super excited for you to see S2. Part of what makes this show great is that it really makes the viewer think not just about what they'd do in a zombie apocalypse but what moral choices they'd make - who to help or not help, who to trust, how to deal with enemies, when is it ok to kill, what risks are worth taking, etc. I think the only thing to keep in mind is that the entire S1 happened over the course of about five days, which is easy to forget and leads to some people judging characters unfairly. It makes sense for Andrea to be so broken at the CDC when she lost her sister barely a day before. Meanwhile in less than a week, Shane has lost control of the group, lost Lori and Carl, and is now being bossed about by Rick when Shane has clearly always been the 'bigger' personality in their friendship. (That said as far as I'm concerned, what he did to Lori in this episode is something he can't come back from and shows that he's far more selfish than he's making out to be - though that's just my view of his character and nothing to do with spoilers.)
I agree that Shane's is the " bigger" personality but I think that in general Rick is the one who inspired respect and confidence even before the turn. I always caught a whiff of jealousy and resentment on him concerning Rick.

And, they had decided that the walkers hold not be doing things, like turning door knows, using rocks to break win dows, or picking up items, like the little girl and the stuffed animal. I don't hold anything against Shane or Lori. A lot of people hate one or the other, or both, for betraying Rick. I don't see it as a betrayal. Not in the beginning. Not up until now. Shane truly saved all their lives. And they all believed Rick was dead. How could he possibly be alive? They didn't have the resources to care for him. And in the moment, they needed to focus on surviving themselves. While I don't like Shane, while I disagree with his choices, I don't hold this against him.

Loved your reaction, especially when you got the flashback of Shane at the hospital trying to rescue Rick and had it not been for him pushing that gurney against the door perhaps we'd be seeing "Walker Rick" or he'd come to some sort of harm from someone because although Shane thought that Rick was dead, that action of putting that gurney up against the door shows that a very small percent thought he may be alive or may come out of that coma state he is in, almost like a "what if..." or "just in case". It looks like those soldiers were following an order from above, probably from the government to go into hospitals and kill them all, the sick and elderly in case any of them who entered or anyone visiting or a member of staff or a member of the medical team are infected and die because it will then spread like wildfire and take over the city they didn't want to take the risk, but they already lost control as we see the carnage left outside the hospital and in Ep1 the city of Atlanta is completely overrun with the dead, so that order from above was them acting out of fear because they already couldn't contain the virus, so the military do what the military do, eliminate the threat.
In the No Mercy campaign of Left 4 Dead there is a room in the hospital section that is closed and has a gurney in front of the door blocking you from getting in. Reminds me of this episode everytime I play it 😁
I've always wondered why a police officer, who should have some emergency training tried to determine whether Rick was alive by listening to his chest, not checking his pulse. Besides, Rick was on monitors and they plainly showed Rick was alive prior to Shane unhooking them. He definitely knew Rick was alive and lied to Lori to get them to leave. I don't think he could have done anything different but continuing to claim that he thought Rick was dead is just bulls**t.
i agree that at the start of the apocalypse Shane did well, but idk he deteriorates so rapidly there's no way i'd feel safe around him as Lori. also omg i love your theory at 2:49 about the Dr. honestly, i'd understand that more than what he actually tries to do. idc if he lets them out in the end, he wasn't going to tell them or give them a choice
i dont know if this has already been stated but fun fact this was supposed to be the final episode of the show and everyone was meant to blow up at the CDC but they saw how much viewers loved the show that they decided to change the script and continue the show!
For me the First season is perfectly structured: Episode 1x1 - Introduction in the new World through Rick's eyes Episode 1x2 - Meeting the group Episode 1x3 - Characterbuilding Episode 1x4 - Walker Attack Episode 1x5 - What happens when you are bitten Episode 1x6 Some background facts about the Virus. Every episode you see something new or learn something about the characters.
From the first time I watched this show I guess I'm in the minority but from the get go I was always sympathetic to Shane believing that he really thought that Rick died. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying that I think it was ok for him to quickly go and sleep with his buddy wife. But as far as thinking he died I always thought that that's what he really thought.
i don't really care about that either way, i care about the sexual assault on Lori and the attempted murder of his best friend. and obviously the whole Otis thing
