If you flip the calipers so you can see the screen when measuring. you'll take better measurements because you can see where and when it's registering best. I've never - ever succeeded at using them the way you do. They always move just a little when I remove them from the work. Aluminum cuts so unbelievably well with HSS tooling; way nicer than with carbide. You can get such a keen edge with HSS. Use kerosene for cutting aluminum.
@@ypaulbrown WD40 is mostly ICP solvent. This is a proprietary product that is very much like de-oderized Kerosene (it may be kero with a special treatment). There's a touch of hydrotreated light pump oil, engine oil and light and heavy hydrotreated paraffins in it. Years ago the MSDS listed the CAS # for aviation jet fuel as almost 100% with a wee skosh of mineral oil. Kero is why it's good on aluminum. You can just buy kero it's so much cheaper.
Leaving a chuck key (ratchet with extension) in the chuck is one of those things that turns out badly someday. I think it would have been nice to see proper measurements taken to avoid the time consuming process of, measure, hog some more out, measure again, rinse and repeat. Instead, just measure, and know each turn on the cross slide will enlarge the hole by 0.020"
I’ve been eyeing that Chinese QCTP, haven’t pulled the trigger just yet. Just a free suggestion, grab a set of cheap snap-spring ID feelers. I think I paid $50 for a set of 7 that ranges from 1/2” to 5”. It’s way more accurate and easy to use. Keep up the great work

I enjoy watching your videos. When you were cutting the inside thread, I noticed that you adjusted the compound each time you turned the cross slide. Why was this?
For your own safety you should take your ring off while you're doing machining...... And it would be best if you would roll your sleeves up too (rather than risk them getting caught in the machinery). BTW..... Where are the "turning tricks" that we were supposed to see? From what I can tell you got quite a bit of chatter on your external threads.
I agree with you 100%, no commentary whatsoever so how is any of this tips. I’m completely new to running a lathe and just bought my first and I’m already seeing mistakes in this video so I’m not sure how any of this would be tips, don’t teach bad tips, proper measuring, documenting etc.
hello Ive see that you use the tread handle and not the clutch ？ have you a problem with him, Iv an old sheldon 1936 model and it is an similar lathe and mine lathe have this clutch ,I has a problem with the piñon that go engange with the leadscrew but ive replace this piñon because he dont engaeged , now he go good nice video bye
No tricks,, just foolish long sleeves and foolish wedding rings,,a trick would be how to untangle your shirt sleeves and get ring off after the lathe got done with them.
I like the long sleeves...
That and long hair or sweater string have hurt many young high school and college student in shop class.

WD-40 also works great on aluminum for cutting

he likely was returning the cross slide to the same spot every time and advancing the compound in each time to take the deeper bite

Hi, always use the lead screw engagement when threading and the clutch when taking regular cuts. Hope you can get it figured out. Thanks for watching
maybe im tripping but your chuck doesnt seem to run 100% true, looks like its trowing a bit maybe its just the video
