- 1983 we won the American Cup. 1987 was the time to defend it....1987 Holden released the ULP compatible version of the 5.0 litre (308). Promoting the torque. Compared to the Ford XF range..and Nissan and Mitsubishi. History recalls this motor was sub-par (compared to VL turbo) and the later released EFI / Walkinshaw motor.
Great ad. But I love how the carby V8 in the VL had virtually identical power AND torque figures to the fuel injected 4.1Litre 6 in the Falcon. "But it's a V8 maaayyyyte!!!!"
stand back! it has 125kw of raw power!!!!!
@Seattlecarnut Holden once did a challenge to prove it was possible. they used a stock VL V8 Commodore, to tow a Boeing 737 down a runway. Yes the body was stuffed afterwards, but it did succeed. To prove that they weren't cheating, or that the engines on the plae weren't running, they had something like a dozen journalists supervise shooting of the ad. Most of it is about momentum. Once it's rolling, it's easy to pull most things on flat ground
Mechknight73 yet a man can do the same thing with his ponytail!!!
1986: Peter Brock
2013: Habib
That yacht comes with a driveable anchor :p
The SIX was where it's at - compared to that tough, silky rod of power, the 5lt seemed like a clattering old piece of farm equipment!
I was actually working at Ansett when it was done. Car struggled and they added sand in the boot. They used 1st gear all the way. Once the aircraft starts rolling a few guys can push a 737. Does anyone have the video?
Hey Rob found the video th-cam.com/video/swQOF68UA84/w-d-xo.html
I Know its in the Holden Website in the holden history page.
Pollution laws saw the 5lt V8 Drop in power over the years.
+Rcalltypes Still sounded great though
Rcalltypes like old age
@Seattlecarnut I have always thought the driver looked like Dennis Farina.....
Very weird that the sailor was driving a Lincoln Continental, a car not actually sold in Australia
Indeed but it coincided with the 1987 America's cup campaign. I think Holden may have been the official sponsor of the 1987 America's cup. So it would make sense to make a car commercial featuring an American car driven by a sailor and his wife and a newly updated VL Commodore 5.0litre V8 engine made to run on unleaded fuel towing a massive sail yacht and overtaking the American car and leaving it behind. And the tagline said it all. "The new Holden Commodore V8 is back better than ever". Perhaps too Holden fancied that Australia would win the 1987 America's cup campaign as they did famously four years prior in the 1983 America's cup campaign. Makes sense doesn't it.
What people don't understand is where these engines made their torque.. yes many cars by comparison are quick in a straight line, but NOTHING compares to that feeling the old V8s had, Even my GLC63 doesn't give you that same satisfaction
"Opel" Commodore indeed! They may have started with the same shell, but Holden had tuned, tweaked, restyled, overhauled or just plain changed out almost everything about it. The original plan was to put Holden engines and drivelines in the Opel, until they realised that they'd need some serious redesigning under the skin to cope with Australian dirt roads. All that work paid off, because the VB's first victory was an enduro rally
Although when you consider how much an aircraft tug weighs by comparison, it's still a good effort
Mechknight73 most probably bullshit
Hmmm, looks like you've quoted this direct from Wikipedia...
Yet the turbos were faster! hahaha!
Matteo Venafro Datsun!!!
VL BRO!!!!!
@Seattlecarnut Would be hard to dind, but the evidence is there. Aircraft tugs weigh about three metric tonnes. This one had weight in the rear to help, but I've see the ad, and it worked. a 737 tips the scales at 40 tonnes. A fully laden road train weighs 200 tonnes if you include the truck.
VL BRO!!
@Seattlecarnut - Hey, those World's Strongest Man competitors can do it, why not a Commodore?
ARE YOU LISTENING? That's the Manchester United's "Glory Glory Man United" anthem.
Thats why a american car company genral motors owns the small car firm Holden.......
MACK DADDY YEAH !!
For some reason that man kind of looks like Jeremy Clarkson but a bit tanned
@Seattlecarnut Tops - a Commo fan from USA. Look at my driving across USA video. Ford Crown Victoria's everywhere...up for renewal. My tip is to redo the 1986 VL Holden Commodore Turbo. Google it - a total rocket in its day. Even now due to its light weight still is a rapid car! LOL
VL BRO!!!!
I would take that American car any day over the VL Commodore with it's plastic wheels, plastic bumpers, wind-up windows. When this ad came out the Commodore was already 9 years old and very outdated.
CheesyTV dont r forget the plastic 5.0!!!
Obviously, you've never driven either car.
The VL was a fantastic car for it's time with the 3.0L version or turbo even better (never driven a V8 one so no comment). Something a lot of Australians don't know is they were exported to a number of other countries with a 2.0L engine. At least that is the version we saw more of in Singapore and it was also sold that way in Thailand and Indonesia, NZ...
just like you apparently! stop contradicting your self!
Compared to that American car, the Commodore looks like a plastic toy, with it's plastic grey bumpers, plastic hubcaps, plastic mirrors and door handles...
CheesyTV & plastic 5.0 motor!
How dare they drown out The Battle Hymn of the Republic! Another reason NOT to buy Holden!
They'll do anything to sell rubbish cars..
