It seems to me that this piece needs a lot more stress, agony, and exhaustion in the performance than it receives here (or about anywhere I've found on TH-cam). If anyone was the father of musical drama, it was Monteverdi. It's not enough to make this sound beautiful!
This makes me laugh and throw kisses at the screen - why? Not because it's so dramatic but because it reminds me of our time in Dartington Summer School when we lived in lovely, sleepy Devon, spending the best times of our lives with Robert and his 'gang' - as well as the few live performances of great quality (Full Monteverdi) and the DVD How like an Angel....
A friend of Monteverdi's, Aquilino Coppini, a professor of rhetoric at the University of Padua, took his popular collection of secular madrigals (from1607) and rewrote them with sacred texts and published it the following year, in part to satisfy the great need for more sacred music following the Council of Trent.
Now that would be tricky, getting the profane out of one’s head to sing the sacred! Having heard this! The Protestants tried to keep the Salve Regina going, with text about Christ instead, but I don’t notice that it worked
I can't believe I've gone through an entire year at music college without having sung any Monteverdi. This must be rectified.
Eloquente e di una cifra stilistica quantomai arguta e fina. Bravo Signor Hollingworth... questi Italiani dannati!
I'm so glad I found this video and look forward to hearing more from Mr. Hollingworth!!
Ah gorgeous piece ... getting better all the time.

Formidable Robert !! comme toujours !! (ça me rappelle d'excellents souvenirs d'il y a déjà bien longtemps à Loches)
Enjoyed that. I remember those days...!! You are still just as much a Goon as ever, Robert!
Excellent... obviously I am a bit behind so got some catching up to look forward to!!!
Grazie mille. Thank you very much. I am overcome by emotion.

Marvellous as ever! Che passione!
Superb
I'm not sure you can say 'post poke smoke' on TH-cam...
One question why there is another version with other lyrics which begin by Oh Jesu Mea Vita?
