I had no idea after effects had the ability to do volumetric lighting. If I took a stab at it, I would've done some post production edits in blender!

I know the director was interested in potentially having me back for stuff like a gameplay trailer, but it'll mostly depend on my availability at the time and if I have any other projects keeping me busy
Nice catch - that’s specifically because it’s in AVI format, which is a lossless format so the file size is huge. However, it’s one of the only video file types that includes transparency, which is why I used it there. I’ve recently heard that there’s a “QuickTime” format usable in Adobe software that allows transparency without taking up so much space, so I’ll probably look into using that for the future. Most people online say “just use AVIs if you need transparency” which is why I’ve been using that so far
just learning after effects in college, already confused as fuck even IF its just animating a bouncing ball. seeing you do this is intimidating but knowing something this amazing can be achieved using AE im gunna learn hard and work hard to be as good as you!
Unfortunately I haven't done any editing on mobile before, so I can't recommend any. However, sometimes when I encounter a motion-design video like this that is edited on mobile, they mention using "Cute Cut Pro", might be worth looking at. (edit: some also mention "Lumafusion" and "Videoleap"
How do you make an object or character "pop in" by using the graph editor, like in Hitfilm? Especially if you want something to "pop in" at an angle, which would use both the x and y. You'd have to separate the dimensions, which creates some weird uncoordinated movement (x pops in faster then y or vice versa). How did you do it in After Effects?
My solution in After Effects has been to use the "speed graph" instead of the usual value graph, which actually controls x/y/z together more easily. I have some other problems with the speed graph itself though, but it's my best bet for now. It's a bit tricky to explain over text, so you might have to look up how to use it, but to switch to the speed graph just right click in the graph editor window and click "Edit Speed Graph". To switch back, right click again and click "Edit Value Graph".
Yeah, it was made over the course of about 2-ish months. I started it back in October, but there were occasional delays while waiting for new art pieces to be drawn for the trailer
This isn't a universal answer, as rates depends on both the editor's skill level and the client's project in question - but historically I've charged a flat rate for projects, and set the price depending on how intense the video would be (for example, something like a gameplay trailer with mostly pre-recorded footage would be *much* easier to make, since I don't have to create every shot from scratch). For a video like this in which there are a lot of shots that all have animated elements / FX, it could average $250~ per minute of video.
I’m curious, is was there some sort of storyboard they made to be used to set everything up, was there a specific order you had to show the characters off in
There wasn't a storyboard (so, most of the framing/composition was up to me) but I was given a text file with a rundown on what they wanted to be shown at which parts of the song. As a fun behind-the-scenes thing, here's an excerpt of the notes I was given to start with: (these aren't supposed to be timestamps for this video, but youtube automatically turned them into links) "0:25 > logo pops up, animated 0:31 > bullet flies across the screen, across the logo 0:31-0:40 > bullets flying past the cast's ingame sprites, all silhouettes so you can only see the shapes (maybe the bullets are aimed at words or statements floating past the sprites? maybe the bullets are actually landing and shattering the statements? if that's too much, let me know.) 0:40-0:43 > zooms out to see entire cast lined up, side by side, still dark silhouettes 0:43-0:56 > 4 character splash arts: Damon>Eva>Desmond>Eloise"
Those transitions are done only using camera movements, so there aren't any specific effects in play. You'd probably have to look up a tutorial for animating the camera in After Effects (I don't have any to recommend because I never used any, my camera knowledge carried over from my time using Hitfilm)
I had the "forces" (which are basically the impact/shatter zones) positioned far off to the left, and animated their radius to slowly grow so that the pieces would be counted as "shattered" and then fall. The gravity setting under the physics tab was also turned way up to make them fall off screen faster. Here's a look at some of the settings I used for the effect: imgur.com/a/7Zm8YJ6
Technically you can, but each program has a slightly different way of doing things so it's a different process to achieve some effects between programs
It was made over the course of three-ish months, but some of that was waiting on new art assets to be made so it was probably closer to two months if you don’t count that
