That's actually a pretty neat fossil! You might expect it's from a lepidodendron (a scaly tree-like fern) because it's in such an old material as shale near a coal seam but the morphology of the scale imprints shows that it's a lepidote (an early bony fish)! It's a nice big imprint too since the fish were only ~30cm long. Notice how the scale shape changes on one side to be more squished. That's where the fish's body curves around so you either have the dorsal half of the middle of one side of the fish or the back of the fish transitioning to the tail of a really big one. I'd guess it's Lepidotes maximus but you'd have to ask a paleoichthyologist to be sure. It has my vote for the window of wonders.
Edit: It's shale so it'll degrade in water. Best to just keep it dusted.

    • @NorthernMudlarks
      @NorthernMudlarks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

That’s really interesting! Thank you so much for the information. We believe the fossils we find here are the shale thrown out from fire coal, we’ll have to keep our eyes peeled for more! 🥰

@@NorthernMudlarks What an incredible lot of treasures you found. Alex, you've got eagle eyes to have spotted that teensy little lavender bead. Your cat certainly was enjoying the sunshine and grass.
My vote for the windowsill of wonders is the lover's ring, key, the Irish pipe and thistle pipe. Hope you both have a Happy Easter weekend. Greetings from eastern North Carolina!

Thank you for taking us with you. And what amazing finds!! The German marbles were gorgeous, but, oh my, the ring with the engraving took my heart. In a close 2nd place, with the fantasy of it, was the brass key. The imagination can take you to so many fantastical places. The tiny puppy is so cute and the thistle pipe is still so crisp and beautiful. What a lovely day!! I'm already excited for next week!! Stay safe out there!!!

My pug, Poppy, was curled up sleeping on my lap while I watched the video and I startled her awake by shouting “Awww, it’s a pug!” when you found this week’s wee animal. 😂 So I must vote for the pug. Also loved the fish fossil, the sweet ring, and the thistle pipe. Good pickin’ site, ladies!

That is a clock winding key that you found. The coal fossil I think is either from a plant or a reptile skin. A cake stand handle is what one of your finds looks like to me. Perhaps the ceramic pug needs a place in the window. Was pleased this video became viewable. Lying in bed on my birthday morning having breakfast watching the Northern Mudlarks. Yeah! Thanks.

Fantastic finds once again ladies! I think the wedding band has definately earned its place in your window this week! The long handle type thing eith the loop at the top looks like the top handle off a cake stand to me. I've made a few myself and the modern ones are very similar looking, it would be interesting to see if it has a thread inside at the bottom of it. Thank you for a lovely virtual trip out once again to your mystery foreshore ladies x

Great video as usual. I think the ornate item with a large loop is a handle for a triple plate standould would screw into the top plate with other pieces of stand between each plate screwing inbetween the stand pieces and the centre of each plate. I'm sure I saw a small hole in the other end. 😊

It’s so hard not to try to reach through the screen to pick something up. When you asked us if we could spot the find, I thought you were reaching for the blue bead a foot to the left of the pipe. So many things to choose for the window, but I’d choose the ring or the pug. I loved your kitty posing by the beautiful sponge ware pieces. I’m glad you were able to save the video!

Hello Ladies, the very very tiny seed bead is what we call a “charlotte” as they are the smallest seed beads used. I use them all the time in my jewellery work.
The metal handle I use to have something like it on a afternoon tea cake platter which you would hold out to your guests to let them help themselves to a small cupcake.😊😊
Maybe one day when I finally get back to the UK I might just go for a fun time mudlarking myself when I return home to the Shetland’s 😊

Beautiful finds! Amazing pipe the thistle leaf such great detail! I vote for that and the German marbles and the wee dog for the window display! I think your handle was either from a baby's rattle or a bell that one would ring for service if one was confined to a bed. Your fossil is quite amazing, I too think it was from a fish, awesome detail! Love the doll heads, makes you wonder what the rest of the figurine would of looked like. You should cast the thistle leaf pipe, really is a beautiful leaf and pipe! As a artist I love the old compass! I wonder how many children wrote on those slate boards and daydreamed while they learned to write their thoughts? I would find it very hard not to dig and sift that area for more treasures of the past. Lovely video!

Trash or treasure? Treasure or trash? It’s all the same in Gail’s 🙌🏻. I’ve seen you two lovely artists turn all sorts of things into beautiful objects, so nothing is rubbish. I get terribly excited by little frogs just now. My husbands friend arrived with a bucket 🪣, inside was a frog for my pond. ( we are in NZ) I could not have been more delighted if he had arrived with flowers & chocolates (which is saying a lot as I’m a confirmed chocoholic). So treasure is always in the heart of the finder. The groove in the pipe is just heart wrenching. A direct link to the past owner, although I cringe at the thought of damage to 🦷 teeth, throats and lungs. This morning we went to the funeral of a friend who died of esophageal cancer - smoking related - too, too early. I’m glad we know now, and the pipes are an historical item of curiosity. How many of the pipe smokers went too early? So sad.
Another fantastic, interesting video. Thank you 🐣😊🌟😊🐣

Hi ladies, I am really excited to see what you find today too! ( : Yayyyyyyy! ( :
I love old brass keys! Yesss! The little doll bowl is so cute too! I love treasure chests! ( : I agree...the key is a treasure as well! It cleaned up sooo beautifully! ( :
I love the shard of pottery with the beautiful blue bird on it and a bunch of sponge wear! ( :
Yayyyyyyy! You found a finger ring! It is sooo wonderful! 1889 with a heart! Love your beautiful poem to go with it! Brass rings. So sweet and romantic! ( :
I love little panel bottles too! ( : Sooo cool you found a fossil. It looked like some sort of animal skin fossilized! ( : Yes. Gail. That is definitely a whole pipe imo! ( : You are the pipe person today. Gail! Sooo awesome! ( : Yayyyyyyy Alex, you found a pipe bowl and stem too! Plus a stopper! ( : Wow, Gail! Another pipe bowl again and again! That's amazing! It's a pipe bowl day on the foreshore today for sure! Lol! ( :
What a unique metal find you just found. Alex! Sooo pretty, though! ( ; And a huge clay marble! Too bad you guys didn't have a buffer and you guys could polish and smooth out the marbles once again! Ya know? Ohhhh . A thorny pipe bowl!! I love those! ( :
I didn't know about the history of sponge wear. Thank you for that interesting knowledge about this beautiful pottery! Oh wow, a whole figurine, just minus the head. Do you have any golden haired heads you have found? You can glue it to the top of this figurine and Frankie Stein recreate, bring back to life. This beautiful figurine! Sarah is great at Frankensteining items! ( : I love the sweet little bottle you found with the bubbly glass! ( : It is sooo awesome! ( : Wow, it was a cold mold glass bottle.
Not only do I enjoy watching you lovely ladies lark, but the manner in which you tell the history of the items you find is sooo beautiful and almost lyrically, with the amazing musical compositions accompanying your speaking, make it such a pleasure to watch and listen to your videos! Thank you so much for all you do! ( :
How gorgeous, more sponge wear and a pipe. Then a beautiful German marble next to an awesome coin! ( : Wow. Good eyes. Gail! I would not have noticed the headless cow, I don't think! It blended right in! ( : You and Alex both have amazing eyes for beautiful, mysterious finds from the past! ( : Wow. The cobalt blue bead you found was gorgeous, Gail! And you got a leg up for reward! Yayyyyyyy! ( : Holy moly, why did someone leave such gifts for you guys! That pipe bowl you got, Alex, embossed with thistle leaves is absolutely gorgeous! Wow! And, now you guys got an arm and a leg! Yayyyyyyy! ( :
A cod ball! Yesssss! ( : Free that cod ball! Woo hoo! ( : Oooh ..that beautiful face will go great with your mom's figurine body she found. Frankenstein them together like Sarah does in her craft videos! ( : Yessss! ( : I think you found a cat! Yesss! It is sooo cute! ( : I should've recognized the pug face, we have a pug at our house, Bug the Pug! ( :
Yayyyyyyy! Another German marble! German Marble Day! Woo hoo! ( : 4 German Marbles! What a beautiful Australian plate too, Gail! ( : And an Irish pipe too! I am Scottish and Irish, mostly, so I am excited! I want to see the Scottish and Irish pipes in the window this week, selfishly! Lol! ( :
You two give me such great joy watching you lark together! ( : I live watching your sweet, smart larking! Have a wonderful week til I see you again!❤️❤️❤️🥰🥰🥰🤗🤗🤗 P.s.love your beautiful kitty at the end! Sooo fun to see such a special treasure at your video's end! ( :

Gail & Alex, my guess for the metal decorative meta piece with the swirly end and flat bottom is that perhaps it is a decorative Victorian screen door latch. The kind that is used to keep the screen door open when transporting goods into a home so one can do it hands free or when moving furniture into a home, the screen door latch would be quite a modern convenience. This is probably very far off, but it's always fun to "imagine" what these wonderful treasures from the past might be! Super Mudlarking day you two had!
