How to deal with failure in your ART

  • Hello Friends and welcome back to my weekly art vlog.
I colour-swatched my new encaustic wax paints this week and did a few test paintings and I failed. Well, one of the earth pigments failed. So today I talk about failing in your art and the creative process and how it affects your own self-worth.
Our art comes from deep within and when it doesn't work out as planned it can be gutting and make us feel we are as much a failure as the failed piece.
The creative process is a rollercoaster and you need to be able to roll with the whole creative process, the highs and the lows and the art fails.
    I hope you enjoy : )

I love days where everything goes wrong in the studio (truly!) as I've come to see that these are the times when I've learnt a lot and levelled up. So I say don't give up! Reassess, research a bit more, and try again ❤

I am enjoying watching your channel, Selina. I love that you are always exploring.
I have made quite a lot of my own encaustic paints, over the past couple of years and when using the oil paint as colour I have found that letting the oil leach out of the paint, on a paper towel, preferably overnight but at least a few hours before adding to your medium should help. Also, not using more than 10 % oil paint to medium works best. Anything over that seems to compromise your encaustic paint colours. Hope this helps
Thanks for sharing your experiments and experiences.

Thanks for the tips. I’m now thinking I didn’t “rest” the oil paint on the towelette long enough. Was also pondering if I’d used too much paint in the red mixes. Planning to add more wax medium to them and test. 😀 thanks for watching 🙏🌻🩵

Gorgeous colours and great video! ❤️ That is interesting Venetian red oil paint did not work. Thinking it must be the oil ratio that’s the issue with some oil paints. I tried Art Spectrum’s dusty pink. I extracted as much oil as possible but still it was a goopy mess once mixed with medium. There were issues incorporating it with the medium and melting. I added much more medium but the result from memory was not much better. I think I have Venetian red pigment (could be mars red) in the studio. I will do a test run on the weekend and can let you know how it goes.

Great thanks! The Venetian red didn’t seem to mix well so the signs were there. Was wondering if it’s just the Gamblin and perhaps another brand might work better?
As I was reminded by Marianne in the comments, these “failures “ are when great learning happens 😃

I seem to have a lot of mixed paint tubes (Oil, watercolour, acrylic).I just want to ask whats the best way to store them. So they dont try out and what storage container and where Thankyou x

General rule is store paint tubes hanging cap down. All supplies are best kept in a cool dark place. Avoiding air and direct sunlight. 🌻😀
