I am thinking now I wonder if we will ever get a Jojo story with someone who qualified as a villain since they threw away humanity but what ever happened made them realize that they need humanity back to become what they wanted.
That would be really interesting and especially with what we know of part 9 since Jodio seems to suffer from social issues and feels awkward with human relations besides with his brother (and even then, we're still so early in the part). So having a villain who suffers from a similar condition and because of it, threw away his humanity, before realizing thanks to someone like Jodio that he can overcome his condition and reclaim his "humanity" to truly face his problems and grow as a person. Kinda like a reversed Diavolo, who wanted to escape his (supposedly traumatic) past.
This is such a gorgeous idea omg .. it would be such a natural villain for the new universe to end up creating too!
I think having it to be like the semi final boss might make it interesting, the villain was maybe beaten up by the parts main villain both kinda did the same to achieve strength but they lose after losing to the main cast they realize that what they needed was humanity and at the end they reform but the big bad guy refuses to change showing how evil they are.

Suprsingly something does happen in the story mode of Seventh stand user (fan game) when you're going for the full on evil mode.
After killing the crew and rejecting Dio's deal of joining him, he notices the protagonists eyes and is scared as hell because he realizes those are the same eyes he had when he killed his father.
So while it doesn't give any buff, well, in story, he's scared the crap out of you. So that's something.
I would like to raise a counter argument.
I understand Dark Determination as an Emotion, or a state of mind. No matter your morality, codes of conduct, or alignment, you can perfectly go through the whole range. This isn't about if they are good or bad, or putting characters in the same category, this is about people who zero in on a goal, target, will so damn hard, that they choose to disregard honor codes, morals, teachings, self growth... Nothing, and I do mean Nothing, will stop them from fulfilling said goal.
Or at least, that's how I see it. Joseph can get as angry as Dio Brando. Johnny can be as happy of seeing Gyro alive as Kira was when he triggered Bites the Dust. Jolyne can be as determined towards saving Ermes as Kato was to keep Jobin in the brightest of paths.
That's my opinion at least. Please share your opinion

@@lapunk9x9Fair, I wasnt rising a counter argument towards the entire video, more towards the end part (starts at 8:50 give or take) where he says that dark determination being an umbrella term for all these characters is kinda silly, and how Kato and Jolyne aren't in the same category by a long shot.
My argument is that, due to dark determination being an emotion, whether or not Kato, Jolyne, Johnny, Gyro, Gappy... belong in the same category as characters is irrelevant, defending the validity of the term. Sorry if I didnt specify which point of the video I was disagreeing with

I would like to believe that Ringo, Weather & Johnny’s ‘Dark Determination’ comes from their trauma since they didn’t really grow up as a normal child would… For Kaato, she goes above and beyond for her children as a mother should, but maybe it’s something from her past that has her like that or she’s just a terrible human being with no remorse and knows what she’s doing and still does it
If we ignore for a bit the simple explanation of “Araki just hadn’t come up with it at the time”, the absent of dark determination in golden wind gang paints a really effed up picture of them. They just kill people left and right without a care about their humanity, it’s probably long gone and lost
Yes but the people they kill are fellow gangsters. And most of those gangster are objectively more evil then the main cast. It's the idea that they are in "the game".

that’s why I love part 5 so much. Because compared to all the other anime parts (to that point), it felt so “real” in accepting the true brutality of battling and killing enemies. The other parts, villains mostly got away by being “retired” or otherwise disabled. But part 5 they straight up killed everyone. It was a vicious game

I thought of a stand, its ability is to convince everyone that the user is an ally, so that means that the reader also thinks that the user is an ally, top 10 anime betrayal potential

I think dark determination represents the willingness to lose your humanity to achieve your goal, but to that extent you need to have humanity left to lose. Thats why the villains cant tap in to it. I also think this means that once a person truely loses their humanity the determination fades. That fire is like the last of their humanity fighting against the abyss. That pressure, of the two forces pushing aginst each other, thats where the drive comes from. So if a person were to fully give in, move beyond redemption, a be succumb by the abyss, there would be no pressure, no drive , just emptyness.

I think dark determination is a perfect phrase for everyone who has experienced it in Jojo. They will go as deep and far into the dark abyss they need to, to achieve their goals. Take Caato trying to protect her son, she would give up the whole world and life itself before her son. It just shows the length she would go to for that determination, it is dark, also extremely beautiful.

Appreciate that the anime adds dark determination a couple times, the opening of part 1 with Jonathan running up those stairs is awesome
It's a shame the anime only added the dark determination in the 1st and last openings and the original part 6 scenes, because it would've been cool to see it more frecuently in other Jojo parts like in part 1, when Dio pretends to surrender to the police, showing that he's actually ready to kill or in part 5 when Giorno obtains GER.

Hope we get Jodio with the eyes. I do agree that we probably need a better definition of the Determinated Eyes since being willing to kill to protect doesn't mean "evil" (in Jolyne and Josuke's case). It definitely gets more complicated when it comes down to the character themselves and their experiences.
I wish the anime would have added dark determination to previous parts. They’d have to use it sparingly but I think if they do it right it could have been really cool

Kaato imo is true dark determination because she’s will to do anything for her children and face all the repercussions that come with it. She gave up everything she had to fix a mistake her son made.
I genuinely think Johnny embodies the Dark Determination the best as he willing to go as far as desecrating the canonical son of god to get what he wants whenever it is activated.

I think Diego's mindset is a really cool parallel to dark determination in the beginning of SBR as soon as he spot Gyro's weakness until the bridge there's nothing that can shake him from his path, in his fight against Valentine where he first encounters his ability he does anything to survive even if it means sacrificing Wekapio, then the fight against Valentine he once again gains the need to do anything to achieve his goal shown with him jumping from train and killing both Valentine clones instantly as well with his final words about being the victor, and the clearest example being him cutting off his leg and forcing Johnny to take the infinite rotation, and right before that both shooting and punching him with his stand going all out even knowing that act 4 can move in timestop, never letting Johnny ever get a chance to fight back.

Metas, I like the vid and love how much analysis you give on dark determination, but I think there is one thing that I have to speak about when it comes to Weather Report. Weather Report should be in the gray area because of the fact that Weather wasn't always so cold and ruthless of a person. Weather suffered through immense tragedy with Perla that he felt responsible for causing her to die in the first place, and changed into a horrible person because of it. He became broken over her loss, so as a result, he no longer cared about the world since the love of his life was no longer with him. And to top that off, before his memory was removed and after he gained his memory back, Weather wanted to die, so when he chatted with Annasui, he wanted him to kill him after they were able to take down Pucci. In conclusion, just because Weather became heartless, he wanted nothing more but to get revenge for Perla by taking down Pucci and even wanted to kill himself, making him gray in the spectrum of dark determination.
Y’know knowing your and @georgelongcoal1117’s views on dark determination kinda makes re-contextualizing previous moments in JoJo before dark determination was named a lot easier.
Buccellati when he realized the boss’s true reason for having the crew bring Trish to him
Jotaro when he saw Holly’s stand basically slow-killing her
Part 4’s Josuke when he was fighting Angelo or Terunosuke
Possibly Reimi when the hands of the ghost alley were dragging Kira to the afterlife
Rohan at the climax of the Cheap Trick encounter
I’d personally argue Giorno may constantly be in this emotional state, but specific times when I feel like it flared brighter were, say, beating down Cioccolata, when he realized Narancia was killed, and while GER was delivering the final beatdown on Diavolo
Also characters like Risotto have moments that also seem dark determination-like, such as when he basically upgraded Metallica to be able to puppeteer Aerosmith as a last-ditch attempt to kill Doppio while he himself was bleeding out.
What if we see it with Jonathan, joseph, jotaro, josuke and giorno but instead of protecting is after a loss. I call it lovin fury

it was definitely Johnny. Giorno has morals and has a ideal of truth/ right or wrong. Johnny is willing to murder anything or anyone that impedes himself or gyro without Any real hesitation

That’s an exactly why araki had to nerf the stand with a stand user like Okuyuasu. The hand is probably one of the most powerful (short range at least) stands in all of the OG jojo verse imo
@cherie..cherry oh yeah, if any part main antagonist were given the Hand they would likely be one of the most powerful stand users outside of the logic/laws of nature altering stands, hell you could make an argument why The Hand is could beat GER in a fight as long as he has a much smarter stand user. Kaleb and Metas need to get in on this.

Video idea: how strong is the theoretical pre retcon version of DIO where fans theories his original power is part 3 was to have every stand
Personally I do believe in this theory as it is in a way the same consept as the former main villain Kars with having all powers and it’s clear to jojo fans he’s not beyond reusing power consepts for main villains. And it’s also clear there are times he tends to try out new ideas prematurely and fumbles(caugh gold experience’s many one time use powers). Plus it’s one of the most glaring things to leave up to fan interpretation before it was confirmed in a book or something. Plus I really don’t like the idea that Jonathan has hermit purple too and I hate it even more that it leads fans to theorise all hamon users have hermit purple, come on, really lame, especially since hermit purple is such a lame and weak stand. That’s such a lame theory anyway cuz I mean, would that mean if Jotaro learned hamon, star platinum would transform into hermit purple? Literally just because he *learned* to breath a certain way? Gee thank god he didn’t literally just inherit hamon instincts like Joseph did with Jonathan. The only other way people have the same stand is via alternate universes, not even the spin makes people have the same stand.

I disagree with Johnny not being the greatest in terms of drive. considering he was perfectly willing to shoot a little girl down, just because she stole gyros steel ball. aswell as His willingness to slaughter everyone at the link street the moment valentine was brought up.
Weathers Bloodlust was aimless. Ringos was hyper directed and filled the sense of honor/betterment for himself and others. Caatos matches Johnny but i dont think she surpasses.
While johnny does grow to better himself and priortise morality.
IMO. Out of every "human" character in Jojo's who has experiened DD. Johnny exemplifies Hunger more than anyone else.

I’d say part 5 against chicollata was Giorno’s dark determination. Unless I’m misunderstanding haha. I just really like that part
not going to lie serious stare ain't that intimidating lol; like compare it to Gon's stare shortly before going into his adult form, or Naofumi when he was starting to lose control the first few times, Ichigo when starting to be overtaken by his hollow, or Killua's killing intent glare- pure unbridled ferocity is far more intimidating than just being serious and focused
the stare of someone with nothing to lose being willing to let themselves consumed completely and reborn into a death machine is far more powerful than someone just being intense and serious

@METAsMETAs idk, im pretty illiterate when it comes to reading subtext, but i feel like for Pres Valentine to experience dark determination, he's gotta have some qualms with what he's doing, like a line that he usually wouldn't cross
but from what I understood reading SBR, Funny Valentine would do anything to achieve his objective, with no regard to the means if the ends are achieved
