With Jonathan, while I do agree some of his simplicity backfires on him- leaving him to be perceived as a bland and reactionary character- which is true to some extent. However, it’s truly his death scene that truly highlights his benevolence- telling Erina to save a baby he doesn’t know and embraces DIO, a monster that caused Jonathan misery the latter didn’t deserve- with selfless love- likely figuring DIO on some level, missed that from his own mother. It’s that kind of purity that makes him stand out against his descendants along with his gentleman demeanor/honor that inspired the loyalty of Speedwagon and redeemed Bruford.

Jolyne will be always my favorite, her growth is the most notable (besides Jhonny) during her part, learning how to fight and making mistakes while she was trying to save her father and proving her value as Joestar. Also she is a good counterpart for Pucci, who is also my favorite villain.

@Christina Azarian nah, part 6 is one of the best, Araki did a lot of foreshadowing to the end and its cast is one the most interesting (one living stand and the brother of the main villain, for example). My only complaint is that I wanted more interactions between the party, certainly it feels rushed towards the end. But the tragic ending, closing the Joestar saga with DIO, *chef kiss*

I'd say Josuke is something of the true heir to Jonathan's character amidst the leads. We go back to a purehearted, just overall good kid who loves his family, takes pride in where he comes from and doesn't have a mean-spirited bone in his body. Hell, the way in which his Stand is a manifestation of his charitable, loving nature in its appearance and powers is even more evocative of Jonathan than Star Platinum was, but he's what happens when you take Jonathan and expand upon him. Not just being good, but _why,_ he's so good and making it _relatable._ You get to really see where Josuke comes from, what motivated him to start being the way he was, the delinquent who saved him and his mom in the snow, his mother raising him alone, his grandfather being his guidance in life -- and when his grandfather gets Uncle Ben'd, it truly inspires a sort of Spider-Man change in Josuke. And that's something you can say about him, he's very much the Peter Parker of manga in the best ways. Friendly neighborhood Stand User, who just wants to defend his town. He's not out to save the world or vanquish evil, he just wants to keep people safe.
Giorno on the other hand is essentially the closest thing to a villain protagonist of the Joestar line. He's not a nice person, and he's not a good person, either. His first entrance shows this; he pretends to stop a pickpocket and return the wallet to the girls who lost it only to rob them himself, and we see that, unlike Jotaro who will only ever kill an enemy if it's absolutely necessary, and Josuke who just won't kill at all (Not including Jonathan and Joseph since they fought literal inhuman monsters) Giorno will straight up murder a motherfucker and not lose sleep. But what keeps him in line is that he has ideals. He doesn't really have morals, but he has a *rock-solid* ethical code that he _will_ die for. Giorno honestly succeeds in living up to what he effectively is: a Brando tempered by a Joestar's inclinations.
...And yeah, Johnny is effectively just the best protagonist out of all of 'em; he has the most dynamic and well-traveled journey from jackass to hero of the whole lot.

josuke for me, is a fusion of jonathan, joseph and jotaro. His kindness and good will is inherited from jonathan, and even a bit of his stand as it can heal just like jonathans hamon and is super strong. He's also very chill and willing to make new friends, even if they tried to kill him. His wits, goofy nature, cheating and smarts are all from his father joseph, the most direct inspiration for him. He's goofy like how joseph would act, but is secretly a battle genius and uses his stand is crazy ways to trick his enemies. Also his cheating of rohan out of his money is defo a joseph trait. His design and stand is an evolution of jotaro. While jotaro was based on clint eastwood and the rougher delinquents of the time, josuke is based on prince and a much gentler, kinder deliquent. His design takes the school uniform of jotaro and stylizes it to match prince and josuke eccentric nature. And his stand is very clearly based on star platinum. Its big, strong and surprising looks alot like the world. But instead of being a power focused and battle crazy as star platinum, its ability makes it better at supporing and helping people, in stark contrast to the offensive OP time stop of star platinum. So in all, josuke has the kindness of jonathan, the smarts of joseph, and the design/power of jotaro.

I don't mean that he should be in part 6 but there is a lot to his character that isn't really explored in Part 5 because he has to share screen time with something like 6 characters at once. I feel like Josuke is also underused so much in his own story, just like how you said Giorno was. Like yeah, he is the most relatable and also the most fun Joestar after Joseph, but I feel like he gets overshadowed by nearly every member of the Morioh Gang. Rohan had a more personal reason to find Kira because of his connection to Reimi and Koichi had a lot of character development through the story, even his stand develops. Even Okuyasu had more character development after gaining the confidence to make his own decisions after seeing his brother in the afterlife while Josuke remained a static character through the whole part. Not to mention how Josuke had less rivalry with the main villain than Rohan, Jotaro or Koichi and Josuke wasn't even the one who defeated Kira, it was Jotaro who dealt the final blow. Overall Josuke had the potential to be a great Jojo but he was just underutilized so much that he never even feels like the MAIN protagonist of his story.

    • @ProjektTaku

I think josuke was a great jojo, but I get your point. He was shown very little in DIU, which is surprising since he's the main jojo. Also, I feel josuke and kira have a very personal relationship that goes deep into their characters and stands. For example, killer queen can destroy while josuke fixes. Also crazy diamond can perfectly counter killer queens first bomb and SHA. And while josuke stands out but is a nice kid, kira blends in but is evil. And josuke did the most damage against kira in the final battle.

With Giorno, he’s a mature beyond his years, stoic, kind with a ruthless streak to those who deserve it, and has what Crazy Diamond does- only even more animal/plant/life-energy based and that’s before he gets Requiem- which aside from maybe the reboot, has no Stand capable of matching up.
The major flaw is that it’s an ensemble story and he’s essentially a newcomer to an established implied narrative battle between the more prominent Bucciarati and the main villain, Diavolo- directing the group to defeating the source of misery in Italy and cleaning up after Bucciarati. While Giorno’s moments do stand out, it ultimately is Bruno’s group story.

His approach to relationships also suffers because of it, expressionless resolve may work in battle but as jotaro proved, its not so good in marriage. The thing i love most about jotaro is that he is an immovable pillar that protects and nurtures people in his own way but we are also shown the consequences of that trait. He can't express his emotions because of what he's been trough and thanks to that he usually ends up alone to shoulder the responsibility of wielding the most powerful stand in the og verse(ignoring requiem of course). It makes him somewhat tragic wich gives him a depth many similar characters simply don't have.

After Joseph, Jolyne Cujoh was an immediate favorite of mine and yea not only because I'm gay for her but the fact that she's very adaptable and versatile. I can see bits of Giorno in her when it comes to being intuitive, Jotaro in being brutal to her enemies, and Joseph when it comes to unpredictability. She indeed embodies the essence of a Joestar. I can see how realistic of a character Araki wanted her to be, to the extent wherein she's actually relatable (atleast for me). Easily one of the longer parts in JJBA having 158 chapters, it just showcases how far her resolve and strong conviction to save her father runs. Her stages of growth as an individual is very evident. I also very much love how strongly rooted her decisions and judgements are, literally a "Now or Never" personality which is something that isn't really innate to the Joestars apart from Joseph. Plus, she actually has a proper and solid hold onto things, she makes incredibly quick decisions in order to achieve an objective without jeopardizing her current situation as much as possible despite having a non-OP Stand, but a simple, tricky, yet very adaptable one (much like Bucciarati's). She has a very attractive personality too and has strong sense of camaraderie (as expected in every jojo part), she knows which battles to pick which instantly makes her a grounded character. I just think the writeup in her part could've been better though (I don't blame Araki for this, could be Shonen Jump issues). I know everyone has different opinions but i just won't trust anyone who dislikes Jolyne, including those who think so just because she's a girl. Like pls grow up. She's a badass and can kick your ass just like every Joestar could.

With Jolyne, she’s definitely not the token saintly girl amongst boys, she’s too crass, perverted and punkish for that. She is however, a very adaptable character, going from a delinquent who sought love in the wrong places with understandable daddy issues to a fierce badass that doesn’t take nonsense from no one while also having a Stand is very versatile.
My only criticism is that she loses her protagonist role to Emporio of all people, which either a well done shock or a bait switch that leads to a contrived way to deal with Pucci who’s god mode at that point.

      3. Josuke- he’s got a versatile power, a down to earth personality that still has unique quirks and both funny and badass at the same time.
      4. Jolyne- she’s flawed, but she adapts well into a true badass.
      5. Jotaro- he’s a badass who’s only fault is that he starts off as a unemotional jerk with Polneraff standing out more than him. He does get better as a stoic mentor going forward.
      6. Giorno- he does have great moments but his subdued nature undermines his nice yet ruthless nature and is overall overshadowed by Bruno in the narrative.
      7. Jonathan is basic- a pure hearted gentleman, but that’s because he’s the foundation. His too good for the earth personality helps him to be unique, but DIO and Speedwagon overshadowed his presence in the main narrative.
      8. Josuke/Gappy- he started off as interesting as an amnesiac hero with a quirky personality, but gradually he becomes somewhat aimless once his initial mystery is solved- with the Higashikata family, Mamezuku, Yasuho, Tooru, and the people who composed him- all overshadowed him in the narrative. Additionally, his Stand compared to all of the others, looks very dopey and it’s a wasted moment that it didn’t evolve physically in addition to getting a new ability to help it stand out more.

I'm extremely fond of Giorno, but I think much of my love for him comes from his potential rather than what we actually see in Vento Aureo.
Like many have already pointed out, he's the perfect combination of Joestar compassion and righteousness with Brando ruthlessness and ambition, with a solid backstory and a clear, compelling goal. Just think about the jarring dichotomy of his polite demeanor towards his allies and grief at Narancia's death (and the symbolism of him looking at his own dead body; "the wounds on him are my own," anyone?) and his cold disgust for people like Cioccolata and Diavolo, who he subjects to excruciating pain without hesitation. He is capable of tremendous empathy and understanding, but he's eerily prepared to turn those traits off when it best suits him. His observant nature means he is able to quickly judge whether others deserve mercy or punishment. And once he decides he wants to accomplish something, nothing and no one will stop him.
Unfortunately, I can't help but feel that his story was cut short just before it reached its most interesting phase: what happens after he gets what he wants? Because like I said, one of his greatest strengths is his ability to quickly read people, to judge whether they are good or evil (which, to me, has always just seemed like an abused child's shorthand for "safe" and "unsafe"). It's a surprisingly black-and-white perspective for a character whose very existence is so steeped in grey. His insights about others hold true during Part 5, because he happened to fall in with a group that shares either his noble motivations or some sort of sympathetic background (outcasts attract outcasts, after all). It's a simple worldview, and if the narrative did not validate his judgments, it would seem like a very naive one as well.
But what about after Giorno becomes the leader of Passione, and needs to confront the day-to-day reality of what running the mafia entails? What about the splinter factions, the covert groups, the government corruption, the enemies by circumstance, the backstabbing of allies, the inevitable civilian casualties? How high of a standard does he hold himself to, how does he rationalize his immoral acts for the greater good, how does he solve an unavoidable moral dilemma, and how does he react when he makes a grave error in judgement that calls his godlike status into question?
Hell, how does he cope with the revelation of who his father really was: the living embodiment of evil, whose origins are disturbingly similar to his own? Can he, like his other father Jonathan, feel compassion for a monster - one who is a hundred times worse than the one he damned to hell?
(Also, I would have given the world to see him interact with the rest of his family, especially Jotaro. Those two would have so much to discuss, like... um... animals! Yeah. Let's ignore the elephant in the room and talk about jellyfish instead.)
It's such a phenomenal setup for a character: take a traumatized teenager with an idealistic dream to prevent any more children from being hurt like he was, a sensitive heart shielded by a shrewd and calculating mind, and a code of ethics that is both loose to the point of hypocrisy and rigid to the point of unenforcability. Give that teenager virtually unlimited political and supernatural power. And then, put him into situations where all of that power is still inadequate. But viewed through that lens, that's all Vento Aureo is: a really fantastic origin story that ends much too soon.
Tl;dr: If Araki were to rewrite Part 5 today, with all the practice he's had creating sensational morally ambiguous characters, Giorno Giovanna would have been the single greatest antihero in all of manga. As he is now, he's just pretty cool.

Her stand is my favorite of them too. Its simple, adaptable, and very strong in the right hands. There are no abilities really given to Stone Free its all just ways types of ways strings can be used ranging from restraint, to detection, to communication (atleast in the beginning), to protection with bulletproof fibers being woven. It has flaws like the humidity in the air, she cant use too much thread at once, the strings are 100% breakable.

With Joseph, he’s very much his own category-
He’s too genuinely strategic to be the hot-blooded hero archetype that relies on instinct and he’s too passionate to be the typical strategic character that tend to be stoic. He’s unpredictable- genuinely funny one moment and audaciously charismatic the next.
He also undergoes an arc in which he slowly learns to truly respect others while maintaining what’s his core. While his role gradually gets diminished in later parts, he maintains the over-the-top nature that makes Jojo so bizarre.

  • @kaplooeygames8515

Guess I'll just list out my own thoughts
Jonathan: The sort of character who benefits greatly from the reader's imagination. What we see from him is all pretty basic stuff. He's noble, kind, and selfless, someone who simply wants to be the best person they can be. His personality seems to be more of a starting framework than a full-fledged character. The Anime also doesn't do him any favors. In the beginning of Phantom Blood, there are a few scenes in the Manga that were cut from the Anime, presumably to ensure that the opening arc would fit into one episode. A scene of Dio openly stealing from Jonathan, as well as a few scenes of Jonathan wondering if he'll always be at Dio's mercy for the rest of his life. These scenes help set up for his inital childhood confrontation with Dio after Danny is killed, giving more strength into Jonathan's realization that he has to be the one to pull himself out from underneath Dio's shadow. After this, one can infer that Jonathan's personal motive to defeat Dio is to remove Dio's shadow from his life completely, though this is only somewhat referenced in the Joestar Mansion battle ("Settling the Youth with Dio" and all that). In the end, it's still a simple motive, but a gives him a bit more character. In the end, the major appeal to Jonathan is just that he's a kind soul in a world where such a thing seems rarer by the day. A reminder that there's good to be found anywhere, even in one's own enemy.
Joseph: My personal favorite (confident, quippy characters are my usual favorite). Joseph, as well as the rest of Battle Tendency, are what made me decide JoJo was fantastic. I liked Phantom Blood, don't get me wrong, but Part II is what got me *invested* in the series. He's skilled and unpredictable, which lends both a fun factor and a cool factor to any action scene he's in, which helps the reader stay interested in what's going on. Admittedly, his development isn't the most clear-cut either, but his arc is there, him learning to work as part of a group and consider everyone else who is involved in the same cause he is, even if it has to be taught to him the hard way. In Part 3, he's grown into a leader who helps keep the Crusaders together, even after losing Avdol for most of the journey, he still does his best to look out for everyone despite their (mostly Polnaereff's) unpredictable actions. And while he's older, he's still himself, goofy and ready for adventure. Seeing this side of him appear to vanish in Part 4 hits hard, showing just how long it's been, and also the lasting effects of the two incredibly impactful adventures he's gone on in his life. This isn't too much of a hot take, but after the Achtung Baby arc, he does seem to have improved somewhat in the few moments we see him, perhaps due to him building a (offscreen) bond with Josuke, and by the end of the arc, it seems as though he's going to be alright. Couldn't ask for more
Jotaro: I was not a fan of Jotaro at first, but things change. During my first read of Stardust Crusaders, he came off as little more than a bit of a jerk who seemed otherwise uninteresting. However, after seeing some fan takes on the character, I slowly started noticing the other bits of his character. Realizing that most of my favorite arcs in Part 3 were ones he was featured in definitely helped. In part 3, he certainly puts up a front to give him a tough image, but he mostly appears tough due to his rough appearance and his habit of being quiet unless something really pisses him off. "The less he spoke, the more he heard" would be a pretty good way to describe him. Him being a jerk was a completely wrong take on my part as well, as he truly does care about his mother, her being his motivation throughout the journey, and his new comrades, as he shows faith in Kakyoin during the Lovers battle, or acknowledging Polnareff's strength during the Anubis fight. In Part 4, he's melloed out considerably, still putting his keen observational skills to use and keeping his outbursts to a minimum. He is an excellent mentor figure to both Josuke and Koichi, trusting Josuke to make the shot against Ratt, and of course, acknowledging Koichi's reliability. Finally, through Part 6, we see Jotaro trying to be a father in a world that just won't let him. I wasn't too convinced of his sincerity the first time I read Stone Ocean, but further readthroughs helped, hopefully his character can be well conveyed when Netflix releases the last third of Stone Ocean in September 2025
Josuke: As I mentioned earlier, I wasn't too big on Jotaro my first time reading through the series. Josuke on the other hand, was a whole different situation. Part 4 was the first part that I knew almost nothing about when I first read through the series, and Josuke made an excellent first impression. While he isn't my favorite of the bunch, I will say his development feels the most consistent over the course of part 4, even with Koichi taking the spotlight every so often. After Sheer Heart Attack, the story mostly stops focusing on Koichi, which gives Josuke his real chance to shine. Highway Star is one of my favorite arcs in DiU, mostly because of Josuke and his creative ways of using Crazy Diamond. In my opinion, Josuke helps tie the story together, being able to approach the events of the story from the perspective of the average Morioh resident while still managing to have a unique personality. He doesn't do much outside of the part, and he doesn't have to. He simply helps out his own little part of the world, just like that mysterious stranger once helped him
(Will write the rest of this later, I've got other things to do today)

His going to save his mother from death in spite of the immense dangers he faces in spite of being annoyed by her cheerfulness, says volumes about him.

Giorno however much like his father Dio he took initiative and did what he needed to do to follow through with his goal. He is ruthless and deadly like Dio being raised in a similar lifestyle, but he has the strong sense of judgement and kindness which he gets from his other father, Johnathon. Giorno is my all time favorite character in fiction and the reason why is the argument that ever uses against him. During the very shot screen time we see giorno, he really got to set his place in the story, show his strength and weaknesses and fully get fletched out as a character. And in the end of the story Giorno really becomes perfected with (SPOILER) the death of Buccarati and the gang. I can go on and on on why I love him and thats why he always will be my nr. 1. 11/10

With Johnny, he’s someone who’s underwent tragedy, became bitter from it, got karma from his bitterness, became jaded from the karma, and developed one of the most solid friendships in the franchise to get out of his cynicism. He ends up less cynical by the end, but outside of the latter’s few notable sinful traits, I’d argue his ultimate goals that he gets from his friend aren’t that different from the main villain’s- saving certain people for personal reasons. And his initial reasons are even more selfish in the beginning.
His Stand undergoes the best development visually, going from a small, cute thing into a powerhouse that I’d argue matches GER in sheer broken power.

Jolyne is a female protagonist done right. You see her flaws and how she changed throughout her journey, she reflected on her actions and adapted to the situations dealt to her, raising above the occasion and growing as a character.
I admired Giorno as a person, someone who set out with a goal in mind and is determined to get it done. He could be ruthless but never once lose himself or his sight on his goal.

what i love about jonathan is that he does not break. ever. he is the 100% good guy through and through, which for me makes for a character that is so deeply into a trope that he even comes off of it, since many other good hearted protagonists always have a bad moment which they doubt their morals or something like that.

I think jos4ke and giorno both had really good characters and are criminally underused, like the only reason we don't really see their character grow is because they just aren't given that much screen time in thier own parts, like characters koichi and mista have more development than giorno and josuke, like they could have atleast gotten to appear in another part , that would have helped a lot to enrich thier character

this is a REALLY and I mean REALLY good list, i'm not going to talk on part 7 or 8 because I haven't seen them. the only thing id say is that Giorno also isn't a prodigy. Gold Experience is actually a lot weaker then Stone Ocean, Buccarati is stronger than Giorno being the one in the group with A power while Giorno has C power. The only thing i'd argue is that Jonothan is more than just Ok and he is actually a really good character. I think Jonothan is also used really well to establish that DIO is the villain and the Jostars are the heroes with no debate, and Jonothan is actually a great character. He is generic to todays standards though, being the same as every character like Tanjiro - the righteous hero, but what he actually does is incredible. He is the ONLY JOJO other than Jotaro (the main JOJO) from part 1-6 to take on the main villain all by themselves and win. Jonothan goes through extremely tough challenges in an amazing first 3 episodes (some of the best in jojo), yet still wins despite being powerless without vampirism, a stand or hamon. Jonothan is the original jojo and a crucial part of the jo star bloodline and their battle against DIO

Jonathan and Josuke take the top spot for me. Both gentle souls with proper manners, and a sleeve they were all their emotions on. Josuke’s just a quirkier, modern version of Jonathan with a bit of Joseph’s clever side. Fantastic characters. Even without all the depth, they inspire.
Jolyne is pretty close though, even as a runner-up.

Honestly, when I first read part 6 while I really liked the story idea, I didn't know how I felt about the cast..... Yeah that changed with the anime drop and Jolyne almost beats out Joseph for me at this point.
Unfortunately neither stand a chance of being my favourite so long as Dio is about. And Koichi.

This video made realize a simple pattern and it shows why I love Jonathan and Josuke so much and why Jotaro and Joseph are the most popular JoJos.
People in general seem to think that if a character actually cares about doing good/the right thing that means they're one dimensional. On the other hand people seem to relate to characters who don't care about doing the good/right thing and just do it because they have to or to save the people close to them.
I genuinely care about doing good/the right thing so I relate to Jonathan and Josuke much more and don't really sympathize with characters like Jotaro (Part 3) and Joseph (Part 2) as much. (Also, Eren seems to fit here as well)

Also like Onizuka Josuke doesn't have to be always the focus, but when he's on the scene his charisma and wacky energy steels the show.

With Gappy, he’s a weird person with bizarre origins even by the series standards. He’s the byproduct of a depressed Josefumi and a much nicer version of Yoshikage Kira. He starts off as eccentric but gradually becomes the stoic strategist that all JoJos are.
He’s sadly overshadowed by Mamezuku, the Higashikata family, Yasuho, and even Tooru by the end. He’s the spark that ignited the change for the better. Also, his Stand while having a unique power, looks dopey compared to previous main hero Stands, making me wish he underwent an evolution power that also changed the look of the Stand into something uniquely badass.

May get a lot of hate for this, but I always preferred Part 8 Josuke over Part 4 Josuke. Sailor Josuke may be less relatable than Hair Josuke since his origins are, fucking bonkers compared to his older counterpart. But I like Sailor Josuke being a more active protagonist while Hair Josuke on the other hand just waited around for the plot to happen TO him basically.
Also I found his relationship/partnership with Yasuho very charming and adorable. Hair Josuke may be cooler, but I find Sailor Josuke's awkward dorkiness more endearing.

Damn turns out I wasn't subscribed, I'm sorry my man. So I am kinda late to comments, but
Following through your opinions about 1-6 jojos it even makes more sense Johnny is your favorite. He has this clint-eastwoody part in some episodes (every jojo starting from kujo has i guess), the part is set in wild west times setting which adds, and also he, just like Jolyne, isn't op from the start and grows and does it plotwise multiple times better, more satisfying and more apparent than her.
As for J8suke, I think a lot of people (me included) feel kinda odd towards him, like, it's hard to make something out of him... He's present in the story but not so much as a character. I think you made a good point of him being more of a force. He's like essence of hope rather than a person i feel. It actually is consistent with what araki said he was planning, you know, the idea of -lion meaning blessed one, that jojo brings miracle due to saint corpse and all the shenanigans in the story, the flows... And after all, Jojolion isn't really a story about a jojo like other parts. _Jojolion is a story about breaking a curse_

what makes giorno my least favourite is how he has such an interesting origin that’s way more complicated than the other jojos being the son of dio and jonathan and yet it wasn’t explored at all, he had the potential to be the most complex joestar. though I do see traits of both jonadio in him it doesn’t matter cause somehow he still feels so boring and flat, aided by the fact that he’s relegated to a side character in his own part, he doesn’t feel like a main character at all lol
