This is one episode that shows why Edward is a goddamn legend. He was already in need of repairs, but he ran himself ragged to save James. Edward earned his place on the Railway.
I'm sorry to hear about your love one passing. If it helps. You have been one of my new favourite TH-camrs as of late. Your videos along with the rest of the Thomas community have got me back into model railways and a show that was a big part of my childhood. Hope to see your channel grow and you can be sure, I'll watch the next.
Thank you so much! That means the world to hear! :) I promise I won’t be stopping anytime soon my man, thank you again for the kind words and for taking the time to say such.
It truly upsets me the way these models have been mistreated, aside from the fact that there is a major fanbase for this show, these are pieces of iconic television history!!!!!
most of Rev Awdry's stories are based on real events to at least some extent. My favourite is the one where the Wind causes James to whirl round on the turntable. This was actually quite a common event at a Place called Hawes Junction (Now Garsdale) on the Settle and Carlisle line, the turntable eventually getting a timber stockade to stop the wind. The offending turntable survived to be preserved and was moved to the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway (the same place where The Railway Children was filmed)
Trainboy, these videos are great. I loved the little afterthought section. Once again, feel free to take a break to mourn the loss of your family member if you need it.
Sorry to hear about one of your family members pass away :(. I know that it can be a difficult time to get over someone you love being gone, but I hope you can overcome the sadness of the loss. Just know that there's always light at the end of the tunnel. Keep on chuggin'. :)
Sorry to hear you had a death occur, hope to see you make an emotional recovery. Death may separate us but it doesnt mean thier gone, it may sound cheezy but its true.
2:38 fun fact: there was an inspiration for unstoppable , it was in 2001 when csx 8888 ran away from a yard due to a driver error, it would travel for 2 hours at around 50 mph, hilariously attempts to stop the train included the police shooting it to hit an emergency fuel cut off as well as several people who who attempted to board the train but chickened out when they saw what speed the train was really travelling at, a portable de-rail would also fail at stopping the train. In the end another csx loco would chase 8888 and slow it down to 11 mph where a train master was able to jump aboard and stop the train, another loco was also lined up ahead of 8888 to "ram" it if needs were to be.
A personal favourite classic episode. And to think it (more or less) actually happened! Truth is stranger than fiction. Well done. And sorry about your loss. Best wishes, mate.
I'm so glad you did The True Story of Old Iron. Not only is it one of my all favorite episodes I watched as a kid, but I could have never imagined it was based off events that happened in surrounding areas where I grew up.
This was not the True Story I was expecting to be behind one of my favorite childhood episodes!!! To think it happened in the USA is amazing!! This is one of my new favorite videos from You!
Mate please, as much as we love how often you upload and the quality that you produce, please if you ever need a break just take one because we will still be here waiting. My thoughts and condolences are with you for your loss. Stay cool 🙂
TrainBoy this video is awesome but mainly I’m making this comment to tell you how much you make us happy with the content you make you’re awesome and I know what you’re going through it’s hard I’ve gone through it and I don’t just want to say that time will heal but really take all the time you need if you are not going to upload and whoever is gone they will be looking upon you with all the love that they have I hope you continue making the amazing content you make and never back down from anything we love you so much we will always appreciate you
I never knew that so many Thomas and Friends episodes are based on true stories I knew the engines were based on real locomotives but I never knew about the episodes themselves. I’ll have to watch the rest of your videos because it sounds very interesting and I’d like to know more about the history of the TV series that basically started my interest in trains and railway crossings.
Thanks for making this! Considdering Edward the blue engine, where the story originated in, was released in November '54, it is almost certain that the Rev. W. V. Awdry took inspiration from this story, as it was described in "The Railway Gazette" back then.
Old Iron is my favorite episode. So, when I learned that Edward was being cancelled, I ate a whole roasted chicken, watched Old Iron on loop, and cried.
Good story its cool that the actual events would end up lining up more with awdrys story when the full story was told years later as awdry would've only had the vague description in the gazette to go off of also sorry for your loss its tough but things do get better latter great video
The Thommas community: What your doing is BS! Mattel: OK ok ok, but here me out first- Thomas the independent black female engine, who don't need no man. Next reboot💲
I don't think there's many photos on the incidents, but the pararells between the early 50s talyllyn and four little engines+the story of gallant old engine would be interesting (dolgoch running the line and getting a broken spring, sir haydn's derailments, and awdry suppossedly being the guard who left a woman behind)
This is interesting. Sounds like an American railroad inspiration if that's what it is. I love the sound of this, especially railroad rodeo. I do love trains and cowboys. I have to agree this does sound more like Unstoppable than Old Iron.
Here’s some guesses for the unknown reasons of why the train in Illinois started: 1 - The brakes weren’t on enough. 2 - Like for James, somebody may had wondered into the cab and fiddled with the controls. 3 - The wheels were stiff to move when the crew was on board and trying to start the engine, and it started when they got off to get help.
I really enjoy this series! Would be interested to know if there's a true story behind "Something in the Air"! I'm a big Henry fan, so this is one of my favourites!
You ought to read 'Red for Danger' by L.T.C. Rolt. Full of major railway accidents/incidents from the 1840s to 1957. While you're at it, pick up a copy of 'Railway Adventure' as it gives great details of the first 2 or 3 years of the Talyllyn Railway.
In Argentina in the past 30 years, a runaway locomotive was stopped in essentiallybthr same way, by putting another locomotive ahead of it, letting it just catch up, and applying the brakes.
Sorry for your loss, but there will be muck more cheerful moments despite this mare of a pandemic we're living. Good job with this real-life event basis video. Edward and James same size, but Edward a bit smaller, but has more experience. Would you do "Gordon and The Famous Visitor," "James Goes Buzz Buzz," "Henry and The Elephant," and "The Runaway." Please :)
“Old iron? Slow? why Edward could beat you in a race any day”
“Really? I’d like to see him do it”
Edward: and then I f*cking did it
bro momento for the engines/people listening
Lol
Thomas and Percy were indignant!
Lol
Edward: I took that personally

dude ur content is so epic i learn so much about thomas's history its enjoyable to watch.
James has a habit of running away.
Maybe they should put a leash on him.
And a muzzle
A leash around his smokebox
@Team light Productions how do you paralize an engine?
Percy too. Don't forget Percy Runs Away or Down the Hill and Percy's Predicament where the trucks got the better of him
Just hope he doesn't ruin the sheds when he escapes...

I always found this similar to Unstoppable. A blue locomotive chasing down an unmanned red locomotive.
Thomas & Friends has been helping me cope with the loss of a loved one, so i sympathize with you, and I'm sorry for your loss.
I always thought this episode was exciting, so it was cool learning about the real life version. Also, sorry for your loss, hope your better man
