    It always strikes me how these accidents "just happen"... just like when you accidentally reverse into a neighbour's car... some dude accidentally reverses his freight train into certain death

    After seeing that beginning clip, I actually thought that there could be some hint to the Quintinshill Rail Crash of 1915, when a signalman forgot about a local train on the line, which ended up getting hit by a troop train, after it was signaled though. Then a sleeper express collided with the wreckage, and the entire wreck was now ablaze due to the gas lights leaking.

    The incident is also slightly based on Quintinshill, where a troop train would collide into a stationary goods train, later an express train would hit the wreckage, and freight cars of 2 other trains would derail. The goods engine and troop engine were destroyed, while the 2 engines of the express train would be repaired and later scrapped when BR killed innocent steam engines

  • @tr673
    @tr673 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The S&D incident is mentioned in a book I have. Apparently, the 0-6-0's driver jumped down so he could get aboard the freight engine (which wasn't going awfully fast) and bring it to a halt, but the fire man misinterpreted his action as jumping off to be clear of the crash and so he did the same. The driver successfully stopped the freight, thinking the fire man was still on the footplate of the 0-6-0 to also bring it to a halt, but was then rather dismayed to see his chum by the side of the track, very much not on the footplate of the loco that was now propelling the wagons down the line with nobody on board.
    I can't imagine what their conversation must've been as they both watched it disappear into the distance...

    This was an episode that would get me up and jumping whenever it came on because of Percy and Gordon. For the second story, I'm suspecting that the engines involved would have been an LMS Fowler Class 3F Jinty and a S&DJR 7F. I think to anyone who hasn't watched this episode, when they think Runaway Train they think of the movie Unstoppable (2010) which was based off of the CSX 8888 Incident.

    these incidents directly relate to a specific rule in the Railway Rule Book: 55 - When a train or locomotive is detained at a signal, the fireman, shunter, (or other person) should immediently make their way to the signalbox (or make use of a lineside telephone or call plunger) to advise the signalman of the train or locomotives presence, the signalman, must make a prominate entry in the Train Register, stating the location which is occupied which will be countersigned by the fireman (or other attendee), and then ensure the train is protected by maintaining his signals at danger, and useing lever collars (or other reminder appliances), the fireman (or other attendee) will remain in the signalbox, until the signalman advises that he is ready for the train to proceed... if Track circuits or other means of protection are provided then the signal is exempt from rule 55, this is denoted by the presence of a white diamond plate attached to the signal post, and it is not neccessary for train crew to proceed to the signalbox, unless the movement is detained for an unusally long time, in which case crew should report to the signal box anyway

    Not exactly train related, but it might make an interesting video. You could go over the fact that there wasn't just one Fat Controller but three separate Fat Controllers during the book series, all of whom were directly related to each other with the last Controller in the series being Sir Topham Hatt's grandchild Steven in "Toby and the Stout Gentleman". I just recently found this tidbit out and I'm still reeling from it.
