    Hey Rodney! Nice to watch you work again. I’m working the kinks out of my worst bows now. I hope to see you and Kate later this year.

    Why is trying to steam bend pernambuco bad? What would happen if somebody tried? I found some sort of data sheet that said the wood is "not suitable to steam bending" but that's all it said. Anybody know why?

      Dry heat is the traditional method of bending the stick. With dry heat you can adjust the camber and straightness in a small section at any time while your making the bow or many years later. It’s unlikely you could heat s short section with steam.

    What is the reason for waxing the screw eye of the frog?

    • @RodneyDMohr
      @RodneyDMohr ปีที่แล้ว

      The Brass or bronze eyelet needs lubrication to help it last longer. We use a soft wax as a lubricant. Any oil will be wicked away by the wood so wax last longer. Its important not to use silicon because it may make gluing any future cracks more difficult.

    Do you know of any North American woods that have similar elastic and density parameters that can be used to make a bow? I know a primitive hunter that uses Osage Orange (Bois d'Arc) to make archery bows and thought the wood might be interesting to try.

      I would say black locust also, and some really stiff hickory, but you'll need to size the cross sectional height up a little to account for less stiffness compared to pernambuco etc. See wood modulus of elasticity tables. And remember stiffness of a beam is proportional to cross sectional height to the third power.

    You talk about producing a camber template, I would love to have one of those (and head templates would be helpful too!)

      We are still working on camber templates, we are currently having chisels and bow drills made. We recommend coming to our making workshops we have more indepth discussions on the differences in camber and how it works with the graduations of the stick. @@LearningTradeSecrets. Hi from Cleveland….U.K. !!! Just to say how much I’m enjoying your video , and if I was a little closer I’d love to attend your workshops. I’ve only visited the States once , staying with a family in Akron, but I must have passed Ashfield on the way to Columbus during my visit. I took up aviation as a career , but violins have become an increasing passion. I was taught by former lecturers and students from Newark, and today I’m going to learn if fitting a new base bar to my 2nd fiddle bought 50 years ago , has worked 🙏

    You also talk about Sartory making 1 3rd thicker than the frog end, how thick would this have been?

    • @LearningTradeSecrets
      @LearningTradeSecrets  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is kind of difficult to explain without being able to show you in person because it's not quite 1/3 1/3 1/3... the belly of a Sartory bow is thicker than the butt end of the stick by about a half millimeter. So on a violin bow the belly is 8.5mm and the butt end is 8mm. Unlike a Tourte or Peccatte style where the bell is often around 8mm and the butt end is 8.5mm.
