    You make great videos Elliot! I have found in my 2011 Prius that the battery performs no less in the cold Midwestern months then it does in the hot seasons. I didn’t know until I watched a few mechanic videos that all of the systems in the Prius are electric and nothing runs off the engine except a water pump. You’re right about the engine firing up more for heat. Mine runs about 25% more of the time in the winter, for MPG I get low 40s during the winter and low 50s in the summer. The car isn’t able to coast as much due to the increased rolling resistance of snow and salt etc for mileage. I love the hybrid drive in the winter because the electric motor allows a smooth roll-on in acceleration and while driving around, it keeps the traction more stable on slippery roads. At least in my experience. You’re also right about the grip, mines able to handle a good number of inches of snow, they don’t plow my area really during flash blizzards. And if you’re driving through snow you’re paying less attention to your power meter and more on staying in your lane! Haha. Sorry for the longer comment, it’s sort of a habit.

    You say to warm up before driving - you'll find the prius has a 55 second warm up cycle where it will try not to use the ICE unless you really put your foot down. That's the only warm up period needed, after that it'll be just fine. You shouldn't warm up unless you're de-icing, just get in and go.

    • @davidw.7275
      @davidw.7275 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      abyssunderground I noticed that during the initial warm up cycle on my Prius that if I just start driving it the engine will run but it will not engage with the wheels for a little while and the electric motor will drive the vehicle a bit longer like you said so there isn’t any extra strain on the engine while it initially warms up. Smart idea!

    I bought a 2013 Prius in part because of Car Wizard's video about the Prius. Also, I'm here because the Car Wizard said I should be. I got around 50 mpg in the warm and 40 in the cold. 40 mpg is still 14 mpg better than my Aztek. I've saved over $1000 in fuel in the past 7 months or so. And... since I bought used it stopped being negative equity already. Definitely a wise purchase. Even if mine does have 160k miles and has the bumper cover coming off on the passenger side...

    Hello, the info I am after: If we do 2 consumption tests, let's say going constant 60 mph for 10 miles or more during spring, when outside temps are so ideal, we don't have to heat or cool VS same test during winter at mid 30s F, using heater and seat heating, AND for both tests the hybrid cars are at operating temperatures (no cold starts) - will the winter test show a worse consumption? If yes, how much? Roughly 5 MPG?

    I did test drive a 2023 Suzuki Ignis that is a very light car 780kg and it on paper has 90hp with the hybrid engine. But... here is cold in the winter and the stop start function never worked even once and the car vas very slow feeling like it had around 50hp. I am pretty sure the electric engine did not work at all because of the cold. It seems the Suzuki Ignis do not have a heating for the Lithium battery making it a totally regular car in the entire 8 months of winter here...
    The thing is that Lithium batteries HAVE to be warmer then 0C (warmer then freezing) to be able to charge so if it do not have a battery heater the lithium battery will be out of service until spring comes and so will the electric engin run by the lithium battery. I am almost certain that it was running 100% only on the tiny motorcycle engine with no help from the electric the 2 days I was driving it in -20 to -15c temperatures with strong wind. In addition to not taking a charge in the cold AT ALL lithium batteries will be unable to provide more then a fraction of the normal power when driving in colder then freezing temperatures and the colder it is the worse it gets.
