- SCP 682 is a Keter Class anomaly also known as Hard to Destroy Reptile.
SCP 173 is a Euclid Class anomaly also known as The Sculpture.
SCP-682 is a large, vaguely reptile-like creature of unknown origin. It appears to be extremely intelligent, and was observed to engage in complex communication with SCP 079 during their limited time of exposure. SCP682 appears to have a hatred of all life, which has been expressed in several interviews during containment.
SCP-173 is constructed from concrete and rebar with traces of Krylon brand spray paint. SCP173 is animate and extremely hostile. The object cannot move while within a direct line of sight. Line of sight must not be broken at any time with SCP-173. Personnel assigned to enter container are instructed to alert one another before blinking. Object is reported to attack by snapping the neck at the base of the skull, or by strangulation.

@@julesssssssss The scp 173 moves way too fast. It isn't impossible that it killed every single living member because no one expected it. It has no weakness, you can stare for all eternity but it will win no matter what, why waste your existence staring at statues for the rest of your life until you can no longer, not to mention there were hundreds of them as well. Scp 682 was gonna lose and it was only a matter of time before one got the better of him, when he tires out and can't hold on.
682 seriously can't just die from a broken neck , literally he even came back from nothingness , fought the gate guardian who can slice atoms in half, he was even erased at an atomic level in an atomic chamber but he came back in a form which our current laws can't comprehend

They got rid of the original appearance on the wiki, as it was using an artist's work who didn't want it to be associated with SCP anymore. Thus the redesign.

In all honesty, I feel you should never really kill an evil like SCP 682, the entity that may potentially contest the thing that can and would destroy the lesser evil. Just like microbes in a microbiome, diseases are bad regardless, but having many and diverse types will keep any other disease from becoming a superbug, and having many different types may give a superbug more competition to deal with, less resources to use, less space to grow, and more energy to burn against others. But after you remove those, you make them disappear from such microbiome, then the only ones left will thrive with no disturbances and all the resources and spaces laid upon its aggressive soft flagellum.

It's more about the level of destruction and malevolence that 682 poses. The old man can be easily baited into it's prison, and doesn't pose that big of a threat. He's a stalking predator after all. 682 however, is unkillable and has the destructive force of a nuke.
If confronted with a powerful force, 682 can cause an XK-class end of the world scenario. His main ability is his adaptability, which is why he's the most dangerous contained being. The risk he represents is either equal to or higher than the most powerful being the foundation knows about (equal if said being is the most powerful of this reality, higher if the most powerful is yet to be discovered by the foundation). It's simply why destroying it is of the highest importance.
It's the entity in the human subconscious. It knows he is a threat

For those wondering about the redesign of 173:The SCP universe does have many anomalies, and their interpretations are under free use. There is but one exception to this rule. 173. Designed by Japanese artist Izumi Kato, he wasn't aware until a little while back that his work was being used for 173. He graciously allowed the SCP wiki to keep it if it wasn't being used for commercial purposes. However, the SCP Foundation still took it down out of respect for Kato's intentions when making the piece, and the number of people trying to profit off of SCP merch, which would surely include 173 at some point. In short, 173 has undergone a redesign, and this new model in the video is akin to the one in the Unity game. However, due to how poorly the model looks, with the OG head being used and it just overall not looking very appealing, its very likely they had these videos in the works already when the redesign happened, so they just took the head off of the OG model and slapped it onto some wire metal monster, maybe a model for a SCP like the Clockworks. If this is true, then its likely we'll get a more polished version.
TL:DR;SCP changed the design of 173 because out of respect for the OG artist, so they had to put something together quick to release these videos.

There isn't much we can do,as this was a decision made by the admins of the wiki and the creator of 173. If even one person, who lets say made an SCP game, and they coded in 173. If that game isn't f2p, that could cause a troubling legal battle between Izumi and the SCP fandom. And due to the additional fact that "Untitled" (the art piece used for 173), had its own intentions and meaning, the wiki decided it best to react the image. 173 has received an redesign in the form of the Unity game, and that's likely what this 173 Clockworks abomination was mimicking. All we can do is hope it'll be better in the future.

@@genkidamatrunks6759 If we consider the idea that 173, not just being the original SCP, but has one origin that is connected to the Black Moon, then a grand increase to his power and numbers might have 'annihilation' skills that even 682 can't contend with.
682 has always thought of 173 as more dangerous then just a snappy bone peanut. That is canon with 682, not just from this story.

I like this take on SCP-682, because it feels more realistic (in the SCP world). After all, one of the big possibilities for killing SCP-682 was a nuke, but that was denied because of the chance that it survived and adapted to it, but now you have stories about SCP-682 growing to the size of planets and eating Earth because it got sent on a rocket to space. What I'm saying is that I like SCP-682 when it's extremely difficult to destroy, and the methods to do so could be disastrous, but not impossible.
When 682 mutates and adapts it will adapt to survive and sometimes gain the abilities or properties of the threat but growiing to the size of a planet is just ridiculous

@@billy91011 Well yeah, most definitely, it's not going to be an overnight thing, it will take an incredibly long time, possibly more than the lifespan of a single human, but I guarantee you it's doable. I mean, if a lead researcher were to start with a simple interview, even if 682 refused to talk, and start SOMEWHERE. Perhaps as a start, allow 682, visitation, to 053 and 999, as well as removal from it's acid tank and a promise to cease all future testing and termination attempts, assuming said head researcher remains in charge of 682s containment (This being as long as the researcher stays alive and there aren't many containment issues). All around a win-win, even if 682 has issues trusting another member of the Foundation

Well he’s not wrong. 682’s claim did in fact come true in a story involving 173 where it multiplied and spread across the globe. These clones seemingly murdering everyone on the planet, foundation included. The story ended with Dr. Bright giving one final video recording of his status before presumably getting attacked by an SCP 173 copy.

One thing I have never understood when it comes to scp-173 is the procedures for moving it. Their are all of these extensive precautions for dangerous scps, yet nobody thought about attaching lights to scps 173 or putting it on a pad surrounded by lights so in case of a power outage, eye contact can still be maintained

He is meant to be a villain and scp is meant to be a prison. I guess, if you look from a prisoners perspective, wardens are unsavory people. Also at what point did the scp foundation was pure evil? Pretty much everything they do is meant to protect humanity from perishing. Some d class personel dying is justified when hundreds or more people are spared from an untimely death. But what does 682 do? He just kills people because he finds life disgusting? I dont kill people just because i dont like them. There is pretty much no justification for his actions. Though there is the story about an entity that lives in human subconsciousness or something. But thats probably not canon in the head of the original author who wrote 682. That story also doesnt make much sense. It leaves a lot of details blank.

I do not like how this story took away 682’s whole purpose in life. In one story, at the end of the universe, 682, when left all alone on an empty, lifeless Earth, 682 still felt rage towards anything he perceived to potentially have life, and always felt glee at its potential death.
Even when bored with nothing to do for all eternity, he still kept his undying hate. When stars died, he felt good. That was how much he hated life.
I think that story was called 682 the Star Charter or something like that, due to him in his boredom charting the stars of the universe. It was a very good story.

Why not just leave the two together? 173 couldn't move under 682's gaze, and 682 was focused on keeping 173 at bay. They were effectively containing each other. Does 173 produce its fecal blood stew while under observation?
Because 682 could still break out whilst keeping eye contact with 173. And after he breaks out then 173 can go on a rampage.
I mean, this isn't new. SCP-053 was able to almost entirely placate the beast, but their shared containment was deemed too dangerous.
Why the hell didn’t they make 173 look at a picture of 096 so the clone died and then do it every time they multiply?

Why is the Statue multiplying? Why the Reptile can't grow more eyes that blink separately? Why didn't the Foundation just continue to look over SCP-137, preventing it from multiplying? Why the Reptile suffers so tremendously from broken bones while it can live in a state of a bloody puddle? WHY didn't the Foundation crush SCP-173 in a powder (it's proven in the story it can be disassembled), melt the powder in a crucible and pour it into a vessel, then seal it? WHY THE ESCAPE PART IS SO RUSHED-

Hello SCP Explained! I'm the writer of the SCP 173 with high precision blades. I just want to say I'm super grateful to you for inserting my story in a bigger, more cohesive history between 173 and 682. I love how smoothly it was animated and it very well captured my imagination while I was writing it, and that says a lot since I wrote it during my early years in writing for SCP wiki. I swear 682's true anomalous power is actually instilling a great desire in the humans around it to try and kill it, as well as being able to adapt to anything
now that, is a very sensible theory
It’s not a power. Human beings just view an unkillable creature as a challenge. It becomes an obsession because 682 represents a middle finger to humanity’s claim of ultimate power over its environment
If you just completely ignore this story and look at the many other (better) stories about 682, it's actually the physical embodiment of the thought of death - or the desire for things to die. It literally embodies that thought and its true form lives on another plane of existence where thoughts and consciousness originate (as one of the biggest and most powerful things there).
In other words, it's literally a living, breathing, thinking embodiment of the desire for things to die. So your explanation would actually make a lot more sense than this story's explanation for why they're trying so hard to kill it (this story sucks in regards to accuracy, take it with a grain of salt).
SCP foundation: "No no no, we can't try that. SCP-682 would adapt to this."
Also SCP foundation: *Literally gives up when something is killing SCP-682, giving it time to adapt.
Blame the writers for that.
Its the plotarmor again, its basically like the only intresting punching bag for writers and readers. So they make it impossible with stupid made up reason, for example, if they didnt want 173 to kill it, they would just say: "hurr durr, the reptile addapted to beeing killed by 173" end of story again

They wrote themselves into a hole I think. An xk-class scenario couldn’t kill 682 and neither could any of the most dangerous monsters attempted so far. Anything that kills this beast now would be seen as lacking in comparison, or as some deus ex machina.
i always feel bad for 682 tbh. my theory is that he's a manufestation of human hatred and that if humans were more loving as a species, he would be too. (999 is like the embodyment of joy and happiness, the counter part to 682)

I feel so bad for 682. He was walking in the woods one day most likely, then the foundation found him, tried to kill him over and over again, until 682 adapted and became used to its dark life. Forever in pain and agony.
He killed some farmers before being captured.

It's weird that it's the only SCP 682 seems to know. The others it just fights absentmindedly, but it knew 173. When they first met, it kept eye contact, as if it already knew what looking away would do. My best guess is the two fought before they were in the foundation, and 682 failed to kill it, and could not adapt to it, as it's weakness isn't apparent. You might not think to grow extra eyes unless you already know looking at it immobilized it. You would likely try to fortify your neck, or do something to counter its super speed. Its weakness is not obvious. If 682 did not know that ahead of time, he might have been beaten constantly by 173 for hours, days, even years before someone else entered the room, distracted it, and gave 682 a chance to realize the creature stopped killing when it was being watched.
TLDR: I think 173 tore 682 a new one long before either came to the foundation, so 682 is terrified of it, something that never tires, and can never be destroyed.

SCP-682 is one of the originally least well written SCPs but it being some sort of enemy that needs to be destroyed ASAP makes it a punching bag for the foundation to use it’s “toys” on. Which often leads to many cool fights

Another thing is that it probably not the SCP Foundation, but just human did something to 682 in general which cause him to hate humanity.
Still despite his unending hatred for humans, that doesn’t prove that he started it.
According to the serpent’s hand’s document on 682, the SCP foundation woke 682 up from their hibernation, started experiments on 682 and may have even created 682’s present form entirety. So if they’re to be believed then the foundation struck first.
What this story taught me is that this SCP site is like too many companies: they underestimate the importance of redundancy and preventive maintenance...
This may be the only time I feel bad for 682, why not just throw him into a different dimension like the one sealed in that one cave with the alternate dimension where everything was dead and death itself was rumoured to be in there. what if they opened the seal and threw in 682, quickly sealing it to make sure death will not get out.

They tried. They tried so many different things. From absolutely disintegrating him to the atomic level, to putting him in a infinitely expanding Ikea. They even put him against the Gate Guardian, and he said that it can’t kill him yet, that it wasn’t time.
They did. It was a successful termination, but then plot armour.
If I recall, then the entrance to the death dimension was sealed, the death entity was rapidly approaching it. Opening that seal even for a moment could allow the entity through and thereby ending that world. Which is why it's not a viable solution
SCP-682 is just annoying because it´s absolutley absurd how well it can adapt to things, in one of the termination attempts it turned into some kind of undetermined type of matter to escape, it makes 0 sense, the only ways to kill it is probably by throwing it near ultra-high-gravity objects or doing the 173 test without all the plot armour.
I feel like this is one falls apart to easily.
The basic premise of an entire race of 682's was taken out by one peanut... When just the one we know is able to reasonably handle it is laughable to put it mildly. That there were more than one 682 is just so... Why? As well. And of course, if peanut has existed for so long, it would almost certainly have had much more drastic measures taken on a global scale to lock up or destroy beyond the foundation, and of course where did it even come from? Concrete, rebar and paint aren't exactly natural. (Though I suppose a 1000 vs 682 race war could explain this at least.)
And then random "Endless self duplication" While terrifying to be sure is just so... lolwut? Where did that come from? And what was keeping them from being perpetually contained by the eye pods anyway?
Yeah, 173's duplication was... deux ex machina-ish, at best. I mean, really? In all the time it has been canonically contained (and even worse, the time it lived), that never happened? Unconvinced.
The xk class scenario is another part of the canon. You can choose to believe that scenario happened or not, you can choose to fully believe the original scp 173 document or not. That's how the scp wiki works. And 682 in many many stories has been a race of monsters and 682 a lot of the time is the last of its kind. So believe what you want to believe and if you don't like it, then don't believe it

The duplication part felt the laziest to me personally. The way it was introduced reminds me of what used to happen whenever Superman needed a new power. He'd just get it.
Additionally, I can't help but notice that the SCP foundation, this unrealistic sci-fi level company, makes mistakes that normal companies would be able to easily prevent and think their way around after they happened the first time. If a power outage occurred once and led to a massacre, they'd make sure there was a way to keep eyes on the SCP even if the power went out.
Lastly, I can only assume that the reason this last member of the species did so well with adaptation is because it's adapted a lot more from ancient times. Maybe they didn't adapt until later? I can sort of see something like that being the case. This one is much more intelligent than its ancestors and has had to do a lot more to survive than they because the SCP foundation is incapable of giving it such drastic damage... for... whatever reason... That's another thing that bothers me with the SCP foundations resources. They should have just as much ability to break bones as this thing does. I assume its strength and ability is paranormal though.
But, back on point, this 682 has been through a shitton of escalating stuff since its ancestors, and likely started adapting faster after meeting with humans, and then even faster once the SCP foundation formed, and then got to a sort of zenith when they actively decided to use their recourses to destroy it. It's had to do a lot of adaptations it never really thought about the need for before?
Ostensibly the race of 682s likely was not anywhere near as tough as 682 as they had not been subjected to multiple failed attempts on their life and adapted to them. There may have been a time where snapping 682's neck would have been enough to kill it, but we're far beyond that now.

Plague doctor is also afraid of 682. He sees 682 as being so full of the "pestilence", aka hatred, that he doesn't want to be anywhere around it. There was a short story on that.
The picture idea could easily have worked. SCP-096 only has to be seen once after all. So just have the room fitted with flamethrowers strong enough to literally turn the picture to ash regardless of wherever in the room SCP-173 is.
It would just look around the picture. Also 682 already saw Shyguy if they ran the test before.
But people like you never think about how it can easily go wrong too. Even if everyone is told not to look at the picture, it's human nature to want to. Once shy guy is lose, everyone would look at him, causing 173 to get lose. Since no one activated the flamethrowers because of the chaos, you now have something that can't be looked at attached to something that needs to be looked at. Just because there's an "easy solution" doesn't mean there's automatically no risks if it goes badly.
Just more proof that people should stop obsessing over 682 and start making stories on destroying other more deserving anomalies.

After watching this video, it made me think, what if 682's adaptability is due to it being the last of it's kind, and so it makes sure to survive till the day it's babies are safe and to save it's kind. 682's lore just gets better and better

This is part a great telling of one of the most iconic cross tests, and part an extension of that into the updated entry for 173.
But more than that, its a remarkably sympathetic, almost humanizing perspective on 682. For a creature so hostile and genocidal towards human life, and indiscriminately so, that is a remarkable achievment.
Though i will say that this somehow feels like for the first time, there were limits placed on 682's abilities. Ive never heard of it being broken into chunks too damaged to regenerate before; especially given its constant acid baths, and the fact that it has regenerated from being liquified before.
One more note: given its intelligence, ive always thought it would be fascinating if some entity could have a proper conversation with the creature; if it could be done without the Reptile just getting angry, trying to kill the other party, and running off to go rampage. To hear it really chew the fat, say what it really thinks, and give its views on the nature of things would be a heck of a thing unto itself.
It's more that SCP-173 has killed its species before, so I believe it knows how to kill him permanently.
It essentially did. They put him against an extremely pessimistic D class that hated the world and humans like 682. They both talked about their own thoughts and points for a bit until 682 described his hatred so viscerally the other guy fell into a permanent coma. So it isn’t advised to talk to him usually

Containment class is not synonymous with danger level. The fact that SCP-682 is Keter means it is hard to contain. Other SCPs like Abel being able to break out on a spontaneous basis is usually due to more lax containment procedures. I mean seriously? "Mate, this mf tears through metal with his bare hands and can run 64 meters under 3 seconds. Let's put his containment underground with a oversized sprinkler system and oh, let's have a long ass hallway"

hes invincible to all physical attacks, not reality erasing or reality warping. If 682 got hit with the Tsar Bomba, it would probably survive, but if a god erased it, it would be decimated.

I like to think about it as though there are some universal constants in whatever multiverse the foundations are in, so in one section, 682 is the child of the scarlet king, and in another it's 173 that is here to kill, just the constants are that they exist, except for the universes where they don't.

Is there an universe where the SCP foundation does no experiments with SCP 682 or try to destroy it so badly its hatred never became so overwhelming like in the most other universes? That also should meant that SCP 682 wouldn`t be forced to do so much adaptations and frequent contaimend breaches.
Considering this is the SCP-Verse, yes. There is definitely a universe like that... Of course, a lot more things would be different like 999 becoming the spawn of Satan. (Metaphorically, meaning evil.)
