The Zoom H6 Audio Recorder - Complete Review and Sample Audio!

  • In this video I will demonstrate the audio quality of the Zoom H6 portable six track recorder with interchangeable Mics.
    I shot this video using the Rode NT-1 studio condenser microphone plugged into one of the XLR ports in the zoom unit.
    I also take some time to test out and demonstrate the audio form the H6-XY capsule and the MSH-6 Mid/side capsule along with various other demonstrations which are at the end of the video.
    If you're a TH-camr, looking to get better quality audio in your productions, a Podcaster looking to connect multiple microphones in a portable recorder at home or in the field the Zoom H6 is a great option for you.
    Note I mention that it doesn't come with a power adaptor. Keep in mind that viewers have pointed out that you can power it via the provided mini usb port using an iphone charger or even usb battery pack.....
    NOTE: Towards the end of the video I demonstrate a lapel microphone connected into the XLR port on the side. Now the official word by rode is that you should use the Rode VXLR+ 3.5mm Mini-Jack to 3-Pin XLR(M) Adaptor w/ Power Convertor. It will downgrade the 12V phantom power to 3.5V which is the recommended amount of power for their lav mic's. This is a safer option in order to avoid blowing out your lav mic...

    Recording synths is mainly what I am going to be using it for, and seeing the sound test with Roland Boutiques was very satisfying. The noise and hiss that many reviewers have been complaining about was not there. Thank you for your great review, it helped me make my decision.

    • @Touchtechnologyreview
      @Touchtechnologyreview  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great to hear. I find that if you keep the inputs under 5/10 there is no inherent line noise or hiss. Some early analogue synths have a bit of noise to deal with but again if you watch the levels you can get a very clean recording.

    wow thank you so much for that last section with the tested audio, i was curious about how each mic set up would sound especially with the sound effects. Do you recommend using the wind muffler (foam thing) on top of XY mic when filming indoors? I have mine on but i'm scared it'll muffle the audio instead of it being as crisp as it can be.

    • @Touchtechnologyreview
      @Touchtechnologyreview  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You're welcome. Thanks for checking out the video! I don't think the windshield would noticeably muffle the sound in any way so if you wanted to you could leave it on. Having said that I tend to leave it off in doors just to ensure there is nothing in the way of the mic, however subtle it may be. The only benefit of using the windshield indoors would be when using it for voice over to reduce plosives when talking into it at a distance of 30cm or less so for any other recordings of music room ambience product unboxing etc I tend to leave it off.

  • @ianpreece6391
    @ianpreece6391 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had a Zoom H6 for a few days used to record audio on location. The worst design flaw I found was the channel volume "resetting" itself to zero when booting up via line level XLR input. I had the misfortune to notice this fault while on the shoot (from then on I had to keep slighty moving the dial input every time I switched the unit on to "wake up" the correct channel volume). I had to put tape around my XLR connectors to "pad out" the connection to try and prevent my cables from accidentally being pulled out because of the lack of XLR push-locks. Also the pre-amps are a bit meh, didn't cut it so had to power my mics via my sound devices mixer instead. It just about did the job... but 2 days with such a flakey machine was enough for me and sent it back!

    One can tell how good the microphones are as they're very revealing of the problematic room reverberation that make cuts really difficult. A fine example of why one's environment is as important as the audio equipment itself.

    • @Touchtechnologyreview
      @Touchtechnologyreview  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there, thanks for checking out the video. I am a little confused as you mention that you want to use a USB microphone and the H6 when you can plug a USB mic right into the computer so don't need the h6 for that. So if you are happy to use the h6 you can consider an XLR microphone instead. Technically they would be the best in terms of fidelity of sound. So something like the Rode NT1, Rode Podcaster or Sure SMB XLR mic plugged into the Zoom would be premium. Now if you want to avoid using the H6 for convenience and just plug and play then a usb mic would be great. I haven't tested the new Sure MV7 but I thought it was pretty close to the legendary SMB in sound so I would have thought that would be a good pick. Next up the Rode NT USB is a good option. I haven't tested any of the Blue mics or apogee so can't say but I know they are pretty good. I have been sent a few microphones from BOYA recently and despite the low cost have been impressed with the quality of these mics. I did a review on the BM 700 which you can see here if you are interested: th-cam.com/video/DwBnGxCNVFM/w-d-xo.html If you have time listen to the audio and let me know if you think it is better than the Shure, it was plugged right into my Macbook Pro and recorded in Garage band for the demo. No EQ

    HELP: I want to import a music backing track to lay vocals along side to be mixed later IN THE H6. There is not ONE video that explains how to do this that works. I tried even converting the backing track to the specs the H6 is recording at on my laptop on the SD as I saw in a video but when I go back to the H6 and put the SD back in the H6 I can't find the backing track to play I want to use to lay vocals. I'm not talking about overdubbing I just need the track to be able to be referenced while recording.
    Can anyone help me or lead me to a very specific and good english video that shows how?

    So any big improvement comparing the H5..?!
    I am on taking One for external audio for my Short film 🎞 intro’s .. 😁✌️🎵

      I am note sure the audio quality is a big jump on the H5 as it was coming from the H4. The H5 is a little more compact and has only 2 inputs compared to the H6. So really either one is going to be great. I went for the H6 for the extra inputs.

    Excellent for recording. I got mine 4 yrs ago. Is there a way i can put a downloaded mp3s or wav files in one of the tracks so that I can play guitar and mp3 backing tracks at the same time?

    • @Touchtechnologyreview
      @Touchtechnologyreview  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am not aware of a way to download and drop in an audio track onto the SD card. However if you record it in I think you might be able to do what you are looking to do in the overdub mode. This allows you to play back a track while recording on another. I haven't used this feature myself but they describe it on page 35 and 36 of the manual.

    Do you have a recommendation for the best SDXC 64 or 128GB card to use with the Zoom H6?

    • @Touchtechnologyreview
      @Touchtechnologyreview  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have tried quite a few different brands over time and found SanDisk to be the most reliable. I have used the Extreme 60MBS which is more than adequate and also the Extreme Pro 95MBS XC also which I normally use for shooting 4k video but certainly you can use in the zoom H6 too.

    Thanks much for your nice demonstration. I gonna to ask about the device concerning lectures recording,do I need to conect it to apower socket to be functioning or i can put it in my pocket or my bag,secondly, how far distance it can record the voice. Thanks

    • @Touchtechnologyreview
      @Touchtechnologyreview  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will run of 4xAA batteries and you will get 8-12 hours of running time at least per charge. You can use rechargeable batteries or you can buy a power adaptor or use a usb battery pack with it too. Regarding distance it should be fine in a lecture hall, depends on the audio in the room and if it has speakers. If not the closer to the presenter the better.

    The XYH-6 at the end has a bit of echo in the sound, is that from the capsule itself or did you do some post work on the audio.? The Ss were too harsh also, did you have the windshield cover on? Thanks for the review.

    • @Touchtechnologyreview
      @Touchtechnologyreview  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No post production in the audio. The echo is really more to do with the environment that I recorded in. It is a large open space around 30m SQ. Hardwood floors and no soft furnishings etc. As far as the silibence goes on the S sounds it may have something to do with the mic but also my voice. I do produce a fair amount of Ss as most people do so really you do have to EQ it in post to get rid of it on any mic.

    Is there hardware/software support to sync the Zoom H6 audio captured with one or two cameras videos when editing in post?

    • @Touchtechnologyreview
      @Touchtechnologyreview  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The way to sync up the audio from the zoom is to do it via your video editing software. So if you have three sources of audio, 2 from the video clips and 1 from the zoom. You can select all clips and do a sync to audio command to align them. Then you mute out the video tracks. This can be done in Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro or Davinici Resolve software.....

    I'm having trouble with the audio on my recorder lower than the audio coming into the camera (GH5s) Is there a setting that can match both from the lineout to camera config?

    I've been looking for audio interfaces for a while to be able to record my piano. I wanted to get a set of SE07's and a SSL2. After seeing this review I wonder if it wouldn't be better to get this ZOOM 6 instead. If I combine it with two SE7 I can use the 'on board' mics to pic up either a second instrument, voice, or maybe the soundboard of the piano to get a fuller sound. Or I can just use it the same way as I would use the SSL2 but be more flexible/mobile and also be able to use more phantom powered mics. Am I missing something or is the sound quality much better from a device like the SSL? Would love to get some input on this.

    • @Touchtechnologyreview

      Yes, absolutely. The XY recording capsule that comes with it is designed to reproduce room acoustics very accurately so if you get it in the right position it should work well.

      Sorry it took me so long, only just saw this comment. But yes you are right you can use the Mixdown feature in the Zoom h6 menu to Mix all 6 inputs into a single audio track.
