I think I have watched this 10 times through the years. It’s one of my favorite speeches ever and I absolutely adore Lana.
I found this speech from your Twitter. Thank you so much for posting about it. :)

I still don't personally understand what someone could possibly be going through to want to outwardly change their gender but if you can't get that it takes a shitload of courage, then there is something wrong with you.
They dont actually become something else. Its like you have a pet thats a lizard and you decide you want a dog so you glue hair to it and try to make it bark
Do you think you are informing me of this or something? Obviously they are not changing their genetics but only their outward appearance so that it matches their inward gender.
+dennis durling If you were informed about the theme you wouldn't saying comments like this.
Other 16 Sorry, I'm not sure what you are talking about.
There's something wrong with a person who thinks that a sickness should be humored. The Wachowski brothers will always be men, sick men, but never the less, men.
what makes me more emotionally moved is that I can feel, concealed behind her brilliant humour, all the suffering and sadness she had to bear before she could express herself authentically. All my respect and admiration. May you inspire lots of people to keep fighting for their human rights!
sex change is authenticity. Interesting
Yeah it sucks to be an old straight guy nobody wants.
Lol. It's a guy...always has been, always will be, no matter what he, or anyone else, wants to pretend it is. There is no "her", or "she", present in this video, only a confused individual. This ridiculous pretending needs to stop, and time to start getting these confused individuals the much needed psychological help that they so desperately need.
I'm not a medical expert, nor do I know how it feels to struggle with gender or sexual identity, but Lana Wachowski seems like living proof that some people were born into a gender that doesn't quite match who they are inside. Many of the pictures of her when she was Larry look unhappy. Like she was a shell of herself. Now, she has that big, laughing smile, and looks so much more expressive. She looks happy in a way she did not before. Honestly, if you believe in personal freedom and the pursuit of happiness for everyone, what else do you need? Seeing someone find happiness that way is inspiring to me. Even if my struggles are very different from hers, we are all human beings, and we can all relate to each other in some way.
I agree I thought the same thing. She seems to have a light shining within now, a genuine smile. I'm very happy for her and find it very admirable.
No you're not born a gender, you can simply be born more sensitive and to have more feminine traits (males with more feminine traits are often more creative and intelligent (hence their success in moves). It's the result of these genetic traits such as high sensitivity (usually goes with creativity), and upbringing (being loved by parents), environment (bullied/not bullied), and an assault on body such as gut, brain, thyroid etc through all the medications, chemicals in the water, and estrogen mimmicers in the plastic/food + gmo. I believe all these things create the result of a transgender person who are usually very smart, but insecure and highly sensitive people who slowly grew more unconformtable in their own skin combined with a lack of attention growing up from parents/others, and being prone to anxiety and depression which is only fueled by modern chemicals/food supply we see today where there is a new huge link found in recent years that links your gut health (good bad bacteria) to your brain and how it can cause severe anxiety, depression and even schizophrenia. I'm sure these 2 suffered bouts of severe depression and probably had anxiety, combined with insecurity, and they felt compelled to believe that transitioning would give them the fullfillment they desire
You're not born a gender, you're pushed to fit a gender mold by society growing up and transgender people just see themselves as fitting the opposite mold better. It's not even that deep or medical.
@@icemeoutlikeelsa oh shut the hell up. You are born a gender. We have these traits because of the hormones in our body. Men are more aggressive because of more testerone, women tend to be more nurturing etc. Gender/sex whatever you want to call it is very real whether you like it or not. The only thing that is constructed is that thing you see on the screen with the make up and ridiculous highlights. These are manmade (or womanmade) and do NOT make you a woman. It is entirely superficial.
lol, you are so fucking stupid
"I'm not trying to disobey.
I'm just trying to fit in"
She's bright. Extremely bright. It's awesome that she's showing the world that trans people are role models too.
Emmett Kelly hate to say it, it’s not a she, it’s a he-she.
It's really sad that you guys care so much about what someone else is doing with their life. How does her being trans affect you? It doesn't. Why is it that people can't just be happy for each other and not judge people for their choices or what they identify as? Please take your negativity elsewhere.
Mr. Blueberry silence transphobe nobody likes you
@Allie Neesan
It’s 2020, get over it. It doesn’t matter what gender people want to identify as. There are even people living as dogs because they want to be one so. Not to mention, Lana has done amazing work in the movie industry and has talent, so it rlly doesn’t matter if they’re a man or a woman. Heck, Lana could be an alien and I still wouldn’t care.

Miss Lana, I started working as an extra in your films. The first one was cloud atlas here in Berlin. The last one was Sense 8, a fews day ago, on December 31rst in the Penthouse. You are a WONDERFUL and VERY BRAVE human being !!!. MY DEEPEST RESPECTS and BRAVO !!! Especially for being true to yourself NO MATTER WHAT ! I wish you ALL THE BEST and ALL THE LOVE that YOU DESERVE as a person, as an artist and film maker. Happy 2016 !!!
I don't want to be a grammar nazi, and I'm deeply sorry if I sound rude to you.
Bravo is an italian word, but it's the male form. Since you're referring to Lana, the form is brava.
I'm really really sorry of I sound rude, because I know I might sound this way...
Don't worry and I apologize because I must tell you that you are totally wrong. Spanish is my primary mother tongue and I am a professional translator and philologist . Bravo is also a Spanish word and in this case it is a neutral word for both genders to emphasize something great and marvelous. It is the same in Italian. So you can't say ''Brava'' in this case. The expression ''Brava'' does not exist here. Otherwise you would be saying that Lana is either angry or that she looks awesome in colloquial Spanish; but not when you are referring the way she spoke and expressed herself.
I also notice that you are not Italian either, otherwise you would never ever say Brava in this case. If you are not it's ok but I am a grammar nazi.
+riquisimocu thank you for the explanation! I am Italian and yes, if I was the writer I wouldn't use that adjective, but I was just referring to the form.
Well, thank you again: I really didn't know that bravo was a Spanish word
Ire Quinta you're welcome, yes that is alos a Spanish word, no worries, we are all here to learn, even myself

I love Lana. Both this speech and her newer one at Equality Illinois 2014 Gala she gave were so great.
I'll never forget meeting a woman last year at a baggage claim in a US airport who's first reaction to seeing me was to say "you remind me of Lana Wachowski".. Someday I've love to get the chance to paint Lana's portrait.

Awwww you just can let go of her, you have such a loving (weird cos you don't know her personally) connection with her you can't accept it. Get a hobby you have better things to do than get upset over something THAT WILL NEVER AFFECT YOU
+Joe Mug
yes there is, it's called "intelligence". And that is a more accurate description of what she has.
Intellect is the power of the logical side of the brain.
Intuition is the power of the creative side of the brain.
"Intelligence", is the combined bower of using BOTH sides of ones brain in concert. The "gence" is a shorthand for the application of the "generative principle" or "creativity & intuition".
You were close, but I thought I point that out. Not many people are aware of the difference of the two words "intelligence" and "intellect".
Someone with just "intellect" is a somewhat cold, annoyingly 'logical' person, like spock.
Someone with "intelligence" is Somewhat eccentric and into all kinds of things, like DaVinci or Newton.
Ok, Lana is not quite DaVinci, nobody is.
But she is quite multi-talented. It takes both logic and creativity to direct and produce.
+Sub Samadhi So cute, a lower-dimensional mind. Kinda like a micro-organism bumping about, completely unaware of the reality of the universe around them.
Keep trying little guy! You will evolve eventually.
What a speech. It's almost a movie script in itself. I can hear so much congruence between phrases in her speech and lines from The Matrix. It really gives you an insight into the phrasing and diction of the writer, just as you can identify a musician no matter the context in which they play. Her diction is so beautifully crafted, and it is clear from hearing her speak where the moving and atmospheric lines from the movies she has co-written come from.
Agree bro The meaning behind words.
Thought provoking, brave, funny, open... I never gave much thought to LGBT community, as they are not in my life, by watching Lana she has put new stars in my galaxy.
Great speech, beautifully delivered...
I have so much more respect for Lana than i do for Caitlyn Jenner. Even though Lana publicly came out only 3 years earlier than Caitlyn a lot has changed in those 3 years and the public has since become much more accepting of the trans community. Lana also wasn't seeking attention the way Caitlyn is. You will never see her on Ellen or starring in a reality TV show. Lana is a bad ass film maker who paved the way for many young trans people to come out and saved some from suicide.
+aceventuraify Caitlyn Jenner is just Bruce Jenner's alter ego.
This is immensely powerful. Her wording of her problem when she was young is just amazing, and as previously said; inspirational. I applaud her and any person with the resolve to do any similar thing.

Yes, I couldn't even choose the right words after that to describe how deeply moved I am from this beautiful (and surprisingly funny) speech.
The part about the plannend suicide broke and yet warmed my heart it's aching. But the end: Well written and performed from someone who got never to talk about this important private stuff in front of an audience. Quite the inspiriation for me, I still hold my breath... Deep gratitude for your conviction to be who you are. From a peace loving mom who would also proudly stand down a nun or break a bottle over the head (metaphorically speaking) of anyone who would knowingly or willingly hurt my son.
@Ana Antilla How stunningly brave and beautiful of you to shit all over Catholic nuns, as if they were all about “hurting your son”. Shall I assume that you’d “proudly stand down” an imam or an Orthodox rabbi, too? itsBOUBAKA She is brave? Brave for what? She/he is a sicko. This is another product from the sick mind of Hollywood and the Left in general.
Sodom and Gomorrah gone amok.
Mike Rodgers She is brave for enduring what asshats like you tell her EVERYDAY. She is brave for going on even though it feels wrong. She is brave for being herself even if Nature is against it. That's not about Hollywood. Hollywood didn't want her to be that way, do you really think changing gender would have helped her getting money ? No. She is just considered a weirdo because of idiots like you.
Anyway, as you referred to religious terms, I assume you're following an old and stupid ideology telling you that every single thing being different from you shouldn't exist.
I feel bad for you.
Mike Rodgers You haven't answered anything I said. You just keep on repeating that's she's a freak.
I guess you don't have anything left to say to defend your opinion.
Maybe because you're wrong.
That was excellent! What an inspirational speech, given by a beautiful human being, both inside and out. This world would be so much less interesting and less fantastical without people like Lana Wachowski.
Lana's timing and delivery are so excellent, if she ever decides to moonlight as a comedian, I'm there!
If she's happy now, thats all that really matters.
+Nuclear_Option tell us what is on your mind though. What really does matter?
Exactly, I don't why some people care so much and say "the world is going to hell" just because
She's glowing.
But really, what a cretinous non argument. “Who cares if it makes them happy”. First of all, you’re begging the question regarding whether it makes them happy. Who says it does? You? Them? When are people honest or rational when it comes to themselves, or their delusions? On the other hand, loads of evidence suggests it doesn’t make them happy. More people who suffer from gender dysphoria kill themselves after receiving the surgery and or therapy they thought would make them happy.
And even if they were happy, in some sense, does that mean we should just shrug our shoulders? They’re happy, so who cares about reality, truth, morality, decency, etc.. If you’re only criteria is what makes people happy, you’re forced to accept all sorts of harmful nonsense. Religious fanaticism, drug use, delusions, mental disorders, denials of reality of all sorts. There’s loads of things that make people happy, in some sense, and yet are obviously wrong and repugnant. And sooner or later they do harm people - and even before that, they cut people off from reality, and from meaning and fulfillment. And again, even if the people themselves are happy, are their families? And is any of it good for anyone? But you ignore all that. And feel good about it. And in your own harmful way you’re deluded.
suicide is not excluded to just transgender people. so what is your point?
also, have you thought to consider the reason why people take their own lives? does it make them "crazy" by default if they do?
And to think she was nervous about giving a speech. This is one of my favourite speeches.
Very same. It makes me happy. Lol like I come back to listen to it, like tonight, to just hear the words she's put together. She's a wordsmith. Such a beautiful and pure soul.

Such a brave, witty & powerful speech. This cognitive dissonance, or dysphoria she felt while growing up is heartbreaking. She felt two opposing forces & felt like she was in the middle. She described a yearning for a sense of belonging. There are some experiences that you can imagine even if you had never been through it. This is not one of them. You have to go through this I fully imagine to understand it. To feel foreign in your own body must be antagonistic with your soul. She even contemplated taking her life & though her description of that time was described with levity, it just makes you want to cry. Thankfully she triumphed & is happy & no longer depressed. Funnily enough she is way cuter as a woman as opposed to being a man & I am one of those eveeeel cisgender white guys.😉
She is so brave and amazing person and film makaer ... and her hair is woooooow.
I had teary eyes all along this speech and the one written for the character Nomi (also trans in Sense8) at her sister's wedding. I so admire her.
The part where she talks about the lines at Catholic school, 1 girls line 1 boys line and how she was absolutely confused about everything, that hit me on a personal level. I never had that same situation, but when it came to locker rooms in middle school or even in high school, and how my cousin got a quinceñera and I didn't, I felt that same way. I knew what was expected of me, but I didn't feel like it was right. I knew what I had to do, but it felt wrong to do it. Anyone who is trans knows that feeling all too well and how much it hurts and how much it sucks to be in that situation.
I was already in love with the movies she made with her brother (Matrix, Cloud Atlas) but I didn't know her. Wow ! She's so funny, and smart, and adorable. Happy to be a fan of hers!

I stumbled across this (Feb.2016) and just finished watching. Ms. Wachowski speaks to my heart, my soul and my life. I will be sharing this with my family (not all accepting) and friends (the same) because I think she is extremely eloquent on how one feels as a trans youth. In doing so, keep in mind that at least 13% (likely much higher because of social stigma) are homosexual. Many more aren't even heterosexual (bisexual/pansexual to some degree). I think if more people would understand that the world and people are not, pardon the pun "Black and White", that there is a gray, purple, orange, etc., world out there we would be in a better place. I want my son to be who he is no matter what others may think. It took me 30 years to realize this. I probably the rest of my life to continue to work on this. I do not care what religion you are, nor the color of your skin. I do not care who you love as long as you love yourself and love with your heart, soul and mind. Sorry, I guess I am a little like Lana. I am a talker, but only when I am heavy invested in the subject matter and it speaks to me and moves me beyond and words I or any other writer could capture. I see the people on here making negative comments and people making positive comments. I will simply say this in closing my little soapbox speech. You are who you are. You may not agree with everything and that is okay. We are human, we feel, think and make mistakes. I am not trying to change opinions here. I think it is great that you all have different ideals. Just know and understand that you will never know how another person feels and cannot judge completely until you have spent a day in there shoes. You may think you understand but in reality you only understand what you know, your truths/reality, not the other persons reality. I am not trying to change people's minds or who they are, it is near impossible. Believe me I know. I will close with this. Everyone deserves to have opinions and to be happy no matter what I am a huge supporter of the LGBT community and I always have been. If you don't agree with it, that is okay. You don't have too. I am not going to say that you are wrong and trade fighting words. That is not who I am. I respect differences and embrace them because after all you are who you are. Don't ever try to be someone you are not just to please others. Only you know what it is like to be you. Love yourself and try to have a little compassion for others because you don't know their struggles, nor would you want to.
P.S. I would also like to apologize if I have any grammatical or spelling errors. I am pretty sure I do. :)
This was a fantastic speech - Lana Wachowski is such a great storyteller. She had me laughing and crying, sometimes both at the same time. Her eloquence and humor is admirable and inspiring, as is her willingness to forgo her privacy so that LGBT youth can feel hope, see a role model, and step back from the train platform. I will be thinking about this speech for a long time to come.
One of the most touching and generous presentations on TH-cam.
I could listen to this speech every day and never tire of it. Lana's a very brave woman and an excellent speaker.
Andrew Skinner she’s confident because she’s a man

Truly grateful to Lana Wachowski for contributing in such an inspiring way to the evolution of our species. Diversity is what keeps our universe alive.
Amazing speech! This is an example of what a having good family can do.
Wow. I’m just a passerby. And I freaking LOVED this speech, she is simply awesome!! Must see all her movies.
"I was unaivailable to understand why she couldn't see me". Oh, I know that feeling! :( there's so much here I can relate to (unfortunately). Great speach! So inspiring and strong! Thank you Lana for this!!! // A fellow trans person who still struggles with invisibility and not fitting in.
Life lands on each of us like an avalanche. We're either the accretion of this natural stream of detritus, or we are an invention, the result of choice and personal vision, of instinct and need. It takes something to carve out a completely new reality, it demands one relinquish comfort. It demands one live in the presence of possibility, willing to endure what seems for all the world like destruction to arrive on a distant shore of which one can only dream. We are not butterflies by design, and it demands a kind of faith or at least the suspension of such to will the opportunity, the space to go through a true transformation. A Metamorphosis.
Souls who've walked this particular path, understand. That at our heart we are all invented selves, and the only freedom in life, is choosing what you will create of yourself.
Shine bright Lana, and thank you for illuminating the path for those who have yet to choose.
What a beautiful, intelligent, engaging and inspiring person!
We really are evolving towards a more tolerant, progressive and happy society all the time, regardless of what the news media tells us. Could you even imagine an event like this 50 years ago?
it's so sad that someone who's already given so much trough movies also have to give their intimacy to make the world a more toughness place. Thanks for sharing. ❤
What is the song that plays around the 3:00 - 3:30 mark? THANKS
What an incredibly inspiring figure for any human being who has faced ignorance, prejudice, persecution and hatred for just being who they are. We love you Lana, for your bravery, your honesty, and most of all your dignity. May you continue to be a shining beacon of hope for the LGBT Community and any one or. Group routinely discriminated against the world over.
Guys, I'm a woman (cisgender) and I've been falling in love with this woman since I watched Cloud Atlas and all the featurettes and talks she gave about the movie. I'm more queer than I thought I was it seems. I'm Frobisher, and she's my Vyvyan Ayrs.
Lana is so amazing and inspiring. Such an amazing woman.
This speech is truly an inspiration for all of us seeking to be ourselves and cast off the restraints of cultural and religious dogma. Thank you so much, Lana, for sacrificing your privacy to help others in their often lonely and confusing struggle inherent in the deconstruction and rebuilding of their identities. Your words reach far beyond the transgendered person. They ring true for everyone on the journey toward honest self-expression. Thank you!
Thank you for doing this, Lana. I can only hope that your bravery inspires others and inspires love.
She's such an inspiration. I can't stop watching this.
I want to point out just how important this speech is - for I have been pro LGB for a long time and I still struggle with the concept of "Transgender" people. I know it sounds awkward but I believe that it is because of the lack of actually seing those people talk or even exist.
Allow me to say it.... This lady has balls.
Actually, she doesn't. This is because she underwent many surgeries to convert herself into a woman. And if you have nothing supportive to say, then why are you saying it at all. We don't care about your opinion and you don't care about ours. Let's keep it that way.
Andrew Digioia she means courage🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
That made me bawl my eyes out. What an unbelievably beautiful speech.
I love Lana whoever she was/is. She is absolutely honest, true, humble, intelligent and simply amazing person. Gender doesn't matter much. You adore someone because of their personality and inner traits . And i must say I admire this person.
I love you and I'm proud of you and thank you for all your good work and all your great movies you are a great you are a wonderful person and we all love thank you and congratulations
Great movies that you make the world loves you for you just be yourself be free congratulations
What a BRILLIANT person.
It's cool just to see the Wachowskis. For a long time I had no idea what they looked like.
yeah, true.
In my group of friends they were almost a legend, like we didn't even know if they were two brothers, two sisters, a brother and a sister, we didn't know where did they come from, we didn't even know the names.
And I remember one day, coming to my friends, and saying "I know who the Wachowski are! I found something about 'em on internet!" and they looked at me like I was some kind of hacker...
I watched this now for the 100th time and I still have to cry 'cause of the beauty of her words.
She's awesome. Hilarious and very talented. Such an awesome person.
She looks happy, and her close ones are happy, that's the only thing that matters, but she's doing something else, she's making great movies that will be remembered for a long time after she's gone. So haters, ask yourselves, are you making someone happy today?
