I'm 38 years old and taking this simple advice started doing mini whips last Sat. I was sure to alternate left and right sides to learn both. By the end of a half Fay riding I had done 2 pretty big whips. Even on med sized jumps and landing a little sideways I always pulled it in. Start small and increase your effort slowly. Thanks Ricky!!!
This is actually alot more helpful than most other whip videos i've seen. Even though i've been riding for about 12 years i never was good at whips. and the funny thing is this video actually shows me what i was doing wrong. When i first had the idea of trying to whip i would just turn my bars either to the left or right of the face of the jump. But it would just result in a slight twitch to the side. I now realize that its more about just pulling one side of the bar towards your self instead of trying to just turn the bar off the lip. If that makes any sense.
billsfanfoREVer Ouch...hope you recover well man... I tore the ACL of my right knee and twisted my left. Ruined bike, bruises everywhere. Took me 6 months again to be able to jog properly.
The best way to improve on technique is to try different approaches, standing up, sitting down, and just see how the bike reacts when you turn the handle bars and maneuver your body weight, try to get a basic technique and build on it, go bigger a lil more each time. Remember you can always change your technique its just being able to feel comfortable with the right one. Also i found if you have a better feel on the bike, bringing it back round should feel straight forward and fairly natural. :)
Ok Ricky, For an old guy, I had hopes of doing a whip. So I watched intently, you even convinced me at the end with a guarantee. I was so pumped!!! Then I watch it again, and hear you say, "Do it at your own risk" Man I'm so confused now. Maybe I'll leave the whip alone!
@loganyz250f One of the keys to the landing that Ricky may not have mentioned because it's so natural for him is the front wheel position. Make sure that you point the front wheel in the direction you want to go and the bike will follow, a little braap on the throttle helps too right at the moment your wheels touch. I have literally landed sideways before but because I had the front wheel pointed strait ahead and body positioning, I pulled it out. Body position can make or break a good jump. GL
Awesome, you make it so easy, the first time I whipped I ran into a barb wire fence and cut my neck and almost died, his was about a week ago:) but it was fun, can't wait to try it again:)
Doing a whip is just natural progression. Ive ridden dirt bikes and street bikes for 30 some years. And I figured out how to whip one day actually when I was trying to scrub a jump. Except I preloaded on the take off instead of soaking it up and I just did a whip. They actually are really easy. And Ricky is right when you start throwing the bike more sideways you have the seat in the pocket behind your knee and your outside foot just hooks the bike back in when your ready to straighten out. I also give it a fistful of throttle to help snap it around and land on the gas. They are super fun. Next is knack whips 🤘🏼
First how to video that explained how to use your right leg (or left) to re-position the bike for landing! Kudos Ricky for explaining how to not only whip it but to un-whip it! I wonder how many people whipped the shit out of it and they figured out mid-air that the other videos they watched didn't explain how to straighten back out the bike! LOL
Hey Ricky, If you were to open a business that was specifically designed to teach riders how to whip, how would you determine if the rider applying for your course was ready for your program? What manuevers would that rider have to be proficient at? What distance jump would that rider, at a minimum, have to be comfortable and consistent jumping? Also, what size and angle of face, would a good whip learning jump have to be? Any other pros care to answer?
does having a steering stabilizer help with the whip? I mean my logic would be turning your front end one way and then the back will turn out the other way..and the stabilizer will help with that... but if you dont have a stabilizer would it just be harder?
i see a lot of people saying to jump 30 to 40 feet to start whipping but it isnt all about distance you have to take height in to account too. for instance i have done decent whips off of little 20 to 30 foot natural hips out in ocotillo wells that pop you up pretty high. that is the best way to learn in my opinion because you get a feel for getting sideways in the air. i am by no means a whip expert though
like a few people have been saying, if you have to ask a lot of questions about whipping, you should probably just avoid it. it will come naturally when you become comfortable jumping
I remember starting to try small whips but couldn't bring them back and would land sideways almost crashed a few times but stopped riding, 16 years later I'm getting a brand new bike so I'll very slowly and carefully try to get back into the wheelies and whips without destroying the bike or me.
It seems there is a inertia of the decompression of the swing arm from hitting the jump sitting down. That would make sense as to why it turns in that the projection of the wheel going out horizontal would make the bike tend to try and lay down.
would love to try this, but is not the same for each type of jump, can someone tell me how much is a jump away from the landing and which is the angle of the jump...pls
I learned on pretty mellow 30-40 foot tabletops, so IMO thats the kind of jump to start with. Another thing that helped me was getting tips from guys who made it look easy while at the track. A buddy I ride and race with can throw it past flat off 100 foot + doubles. Makes me sick, LOL.
Here's another tip for beginning whippers. You can land sideways and get away with it rather easily if you put the front wheel down first. Keep that in your head if you throw a big one that won''t quite come back before you land. Put your front wheel on the ground first and you should be ok.
do i have to get my backend all the way out there? i mean, i worry that it wont come back to normal or ill fall off the bike while its sideways in midair!
Good explanation, it is kinda hard to explain a whip..you just do it. I'd have to say to people who are comfortable jumping and wanna whip-look at where most of your controls are-the handlebars, yes. Be relaxed, and just push the bike over with the bars, simple. Try turning the front wheel the opposite direction this will help get the rear end out...you will feel it, Ricky hit it right on, let the bike do it, dont work the bike.To get the bike back faster a good panic rev usually helps
I have a 2002 rm250 and a 2017 ktm 250 both 2 stroke, when I whip my RM, it comes back and I land straight. When I try to whip the KTM the bike goes out but it doesn't come back. Not sure what it is I've tried sitting in different positions and I lean both the bikes the same way when I whip.
whats the shortest jump you can whip, i race at airway heights mx track and the longest jump is 30 ft and the shoretest (not including the whoops) is about 10 ft can you whip the 10 ft jump?
@Emily gunn you see it not so much the angle distance a u haft to worry about i find it easy to whip bigger when the face of the jump is steap . That way the back tire come around better but also with this i dont sit down when i whip i always stand and lean back slightly then at the point were my frount tire is about to leave the ground i lean and push the handlebars down and also the jump the bigger the whip u can throw in most cases when u whip ur bike starts to slow down then u come up short
@randomruff81 depending what way ur going but when u go off the jump n ur leaning left ur going to bring the right hand in to ur body (as in when ur turning right)
@Caesars43 just put a low boy seat on that thing, i ride a 450 and im still on my tippy toes so i just switch from one leg to another and lean on one side an have one leg up on the peg
@YohanNaz thats right, also if you are going to land sideways make sure you're on the gas so the back wheel will want to push you straight ahead instead of buck you over. Worst thing to do is let off the gas on the landing or even worse, hit your back brake. But ya, front wheel is usually what saves you or makes you eat shit if its not placed right!
He's right, it will come back on it's own, the first half of the jumps is pretty much everything. The twist in your body off the face. The bike will twist back when you do.
Adding onto that, while you're pulling with your back leg you want to also try to pull the bars back in front of you, it's pretty natural once you learn it, all muscle memory.
How is whip skill now?
This is actually alot more helpful than most other whip videos i've seen. Even though i've been riding for about 12 years i never was good at whips. and the funny thing is this video actually shows me what i was doing wrong.

Agreed, thanks dude! This is actually a good insight.
Can you whip now?
for me the bike didnt come back after the lean. i will try again when both of my legs recover.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
golferchin76 same thing happened to me and I tore my rotator cuff
billsfanfoREVer Ouch...hope you recover well man... I tore the ACL of my right knee and twisted my left. Ruined bike, bruises everywhere. Took me 6 months again to be able to jog properly.
Sucks man I just broke my collarbone in a crash. Scary thing is I have exams in 12 days and can't really move my right arm lol.
golferchin76 you gotta rip the throttle in the air so the spinning of the rear wheel brings the bike back
This is definitely the best most strait up explanation on how to do a whip. Thanks RC.
Rickys the man!! i feel like i trust his advice waaay more than on any other 'how to whip' vid.
I like how you're straightforward on how to do it, I'll take your advice and give it a try when I start to get more comfortable with the longer jumps
Can you whip longer jumps?
My son Jesse and I admire your inspiration to ride smooth and hard . Aloha from the North shore to Calabasas
def the best simple advice on whips. When landing, as long as your front wheel is pointed forward and you get on the gas, the back end will follow
Ricky Carmichael is a legend. Real simple, real easy to follow, real nice guy.
"and you'll do a landing just like that..GUARANTEED" hahaha he makes it sound so easy/
thanks man better than alll those people just telling u what to do whith out even showing started me out greatly

most helpful video to help me learn how to whip. im not as good at ricky but it taught me how for sure.
Can you whip yet?
Awesome Vid dude!!! Love it!! Explained and works perfect!! Who better than the GOAT to learn it from!!
he makes it sound so simple. i'd love to go riding with him for a day i think he could teach anyone how to ride!
You still riding?
“I always was pretty decent at it…”
Such a humble guy. Ricky knows he throws sick whips.
Thank you Ricky, it was great to have you explain it to me.
this helped me so much, i can whip upside down now after watching this a short few months back
I was just at the dunes practicing on my 05' 450r I wrecked a few times it didn't hurt at all and I got the whip down nice in 4th gear !
You still ride?
@loganyz250f One of the keys to the landing that Ricky may not have mentioned because it's so natural for him is the front wheel position. Thanks!
Best whip tutorial yet.
carmicheal does it with such perfection he is the best he inspired me to race x)
i wanna ride with him one day soooo sooo bad
Ricky you still are the greatest of all time.
Might not just be the best of all time but probably the nicest.
I ate shit, then tried it again and looked like a bad ass
RC The best rider ever !!!
I Can whip and what does he say is pretty right. This is the best How to scrubb video on the web
Awesome, you make it so easy, the first time I whipped I ran into a barb wire fence and cut my neck and almost died, his was about a week ago:) but it was fun, can't wait to try it again:)
this video actually helped me figure out how to whip
Thanks for the Memories GOAT.....
So should I learn sit down jumps first then? I really wanna try a whip but didn't realize you should be sitting until I seen this video.
is it easier to get the whip going by seat bouncing? or can you do it stood up?
You figure it out yet?
Doing a whip is just natural progression. Ive ridden dirt bikes and street bikes for 30 some years. And I figured out how to whip one day actually when I was trying to scrub a jump. thanks i'll try but do i have to go big air?? couse im gonna have to change my suspensions
im worried about not being able to bring the bike back in, any tips on straightening up? :)
First how to video that explained how to use your right leg (or left) to re-position the bike for landing! Kudos Ricky for explaining how to not only whip it but to un-whip it!

You made me brake my arm
actually he said try it at your own risk
I think you broke your grammar
does having a steering stabilizer help with the whip? I mean my logic would be turning your front end one way and then the back will turn out the other way..and the stabilizer will help with that... but if you dont have a stabilizer would it just be harder?

Ricky Carmichael = GOAT!!
@MondialMX how big of a jump should i try learning how to whip on? I only have about a 60 foot table top and you only get maybe 10 feet of air..
I tried it, Broke bolth arms and one leg. thanks ricky
I remember starting to try small whips but couldn't bring them back and would land sideways almost crashed a few times but stopped riding, 16 years later I'm getting a brand new bike so I'll very slowly and carefully try to get back into the wheelies and whips without destroying the bike or me.
that gear is sick.. its fox platinum but i cant find it any where
Just like that, yeah right! It always looks so easy on television and videos...
Nice video ill try a whip on the weekend
thanks im ganna go out and try it on my track!
I totally agree dirt bikes are more fun and challenging but quads have their place and are still fun
It seems there is a inertia of the decompression of the swing arm from hitting the jump sitting down. That would make sense as to why it turns in that the projection of the wheel going out horizontal would make the bike tend to try and lay down.
Okay when you hit the jump you sit right? How do you position yourself so your rear wheel doesnt fly up when you go off the jump?
Somekind of Legend
I can tell my friends now that Ricky Carmichael taught me how to whip!
what is a good size jump to start whiping on?
how do you bring the bike back?
would love to try this, but is not the same for each type of jump, can someone tell me how much is a jump away from the landing and which is the angle of the jump...pls
i honestly trhink its not something you can learn, its just a natural thing that you learn over time and become more and more comfortable with riding.
I learned on pretty mellow 30-40 foot tabletops, so IMO thats the kind of jump to start with.
Another thing that helped me was getting tips from guys who made it look easy while at the track.

Mine didnt come back by itself, I'll try again once I'm out of the wheelchair
Helped me a lot!
Does this apply to Mx vs ATV reflex? cause im having trouble with bringing it back around
i whip opposite way to him.
this makes it sound easy
im gonna try it next time i go riding
do i have to get my backend all the way out there? i mean, i worry that it wont come back to normal or ill fall off the bike while its sideways in midair!
Great explanation.
as soon as i fix my bike im gonna do this. iv tried it so many times but im determined now
Sometimes you just have to be a hero and for me im going to be a hero tomorrow.!!!
ok,now i'll go try it this week end, wish me luck.
Good explanation, it is kinda hard to explain a whip..you just do it.

So when your bringing the bike back in, looks like you use your thigh / knee area t pull it in, is this right?
i just started racing and maybe if i win a race i can try a whip at the finish line:)
thankyou helped me alot

sweet tips i have already done one

this realy helped me, thanks for the tips!!
you don't have to be sitting down, but its a good way to progress in learning riding techniques
Thanks mate good info
thanks it helped me alo't i am now getting them nice
@randomruff81 depending what way ur going but when u go off the jump n ur leaning left ur going to bring the right hand in to ur body (as in when ur turning right)
Thanks for the tips really helpfull ☺
@Caesars43 just put a low boy seat on that thing, i ride a 450 and im still on my tippy toes so i just switch from one leg to another and lean on one side an have one leg up on the peg
Do you have to be sitting down to do that?
mint!! this is a awesome video!!
Where is it? the Camp?
what is this move called when you do it on a mountain bike or bmx? because obviously a whip on them means a tail whip.
ca parait si facile, si simple à le voir faire que ca en est écoeurant lol
un grand champion !!!

I hope Ricky doesn't still wear a visor beanie
he is
It's dope
thanks Ricky!!!
He makes it look so easy
damn this is so good compared to ryan clarks vid
i will try it out verry soon
awsomevid
"I was pretty decent at it" he says! :-) well.. Thats true..:-) Hes also by far the best rider in the history of motocross!
He's right, it will come back on it's own, the first half of the jumps is pretty much everything. The twist in your body off the face. The bike will twist back when you do.
thanks it realy helped
I try it but its to difficult
