I Drove GQM's Screaming ITB Miata On Track! [And Maybe The Rental Car]

- This is a great example of a car on the opposite spectrum of mine, yet insanely fun in its own ways. I love it. And now for 2019 I have more seat time on track in a Camry than my own car smh.

So good! Thanks again for coming all the way up to Canadia and ripping some laps with The Slip Angle bros and us. You've gotta come up for our track day meet next year, we'll find you some cool stuff to drive.
Came for the ITB Miata, stayed for the 2019 Rental Camry. Miata Dad is versatile.
Goes to show that how a car makes you feel is more important than how much power it makes. His Miata is glorious.
I have a 1.8 na with just a few things and its definitely worth it 1.6s are great to turbo but 1.8s are just fun with few additions 🤣🤣
@@garageworm17 Both are great to turbo. There's a lot of misconceptions regarding it. Both engines have piston oil squirters, a forged iron crankshaft, iron block. Both are great for turbocharging. Both can handle around the exact same amount of torque before blowing up. And both also have 9 to 1 compression pistons from the factory. :)
There's literally almost no difference. The 1.8 might spool the turbo up a little faster, and make more power per PSI of boost. But
The 1.6l will allow you to run more boost before hitting the limits of the stock internals, thus making louder noises from the turbocharger/bov. :)
1.8l has more torque up to 7k RPM but the 1.6 can rev out an extra 200 additional RPM freely which does sound nice. :) It's all in the experience folks and how you desire to meet ur goals
To each their own, both are awesome! Both equally great to boost. Don't get the wrong information!
@@Nasonix2 1.8 from 94 to 97 have 9 to one compression, 99-00 have 9.5 to one compression and 2001-2005 have 10 to one compression ratio.

Canada trip with a bunch of Miata bros and poutine! Does it get any better than that? Glad you liked the car buddy! :)
we all like your car.
Not sure if you’ve covered this on one of your videos @theslipangle , but what seats are those? They are amaaaazing!
Frank Smith - this is true lol
@@bmgreenberg88 Lotus Elise Sport 160 that I re-wrapped ;)
You da man Quinn
Came from TheSlipAngle and Speedacademy's channel, keep up the great content man. Love how passionate and knowledgable Quinn is about his cars. I use to not like the NB at all, but when I saw his white car you drove, I now love them just as much as the other MX-5 generations!
Quinn is such an awesome guy! I've been following him for 4 years now. The Slipangle channel is awesome!
Nooooo !!!! e-brake after a track session never 😱😱
Or maybe he did a cold up lap lol
@@nicolas6820 even still, brakes can still be hot enough to screw stuff up for a while, especially after lapping a short, tight circuit like this
I agree....turn car iff and throw in gear...
I'm glad you mentioned this. I actually didn't catch that. But, yeah good advice that I will take to heart on my next track day. (If we are ever going to be allowed track days again) . Thanks!
Okay, I'm OFFICALLY jealous. If you're a fangirl for that car, heck, I don't know what I am. That's a legendary Miata.
This has got to be the best sounding Miata out there.
You never heard a UEL Miata lol
@@lifeofmike556 have an example? anything UEL typically sounds like it has an exhaust leak to me.
Miata dad turned into Camry dad 😂
Thats a cool build. I love when people just build something for pure enjoyment. Not for numbers, not for trying to beat everyone else, just because they love it. I see that in your personal build too. Who cares what it makes or what it beats, just get out a drive the shit out of it. I love stuff thats mild enough to drive 110% all the time lol
I love you, thanks for being the reason I felt comfortable enough to learn how to fix a miata. 6 months of ownership later and I've never been so in love.
Every time I see this car I want that instrument cluster!
Quinn's car is goals for my NB2! I plan on making at least 160WHP atm.
Same for my NB2👍
What mods would get you to 160whp, cams, exhaust, intake and tune? Or would you need to do more
@Ethan Vermillion i meant itb's when i said intake, maybe you need some head work too then? Still i could imagine that power figure to be quite usable and fun
@@shidoussuper tech 11:1 pistons 85.5 would help 😁
super clean car and great build - looks like you were having a riot out there. keep it up!
That might be the best Miata I have ever heard in my life
This edit was perfectly executed and I was surprised how decent that Camry did! What a day 😂
Thats awesome! Love it. And yes any miata is fun to drive.
The ITB's sound amazing, Quinn's build is legit. So when are you buying an NC Greg?
🤮
This is a great video! That is a tremendous car as well!

man All Motor builds are whats up other people dont see the effectiveness of one due too cost to HP but all that aside nothing beats a screaming Miata even with all the turbo flutter but hey thats just my opinion
I'm surprised I just found this crossover. Very cool.
That nb is goals
ITB love ❤
This is amazing! More car reviews please?
The smile well driving says it all....
Ooooo lumpy idle is goals 😛
Wild pokemon sound track was too good!
Itb’s sound sooooo good!
Best. Video. Ever.
looks like a blast craig
Found your channel when I got my old project car late last year. Great info.
Word of advice for your track driving...you turn in too early. I noticed it many times in this video.
Ooh that sound
Absolutely sick!!
I'm already jealous and I'm just talking about the gauge faces.
The sounds from this are unbelievable. When will you join the itb turbo club?!?!?!!!
Next time you need to bring your miata padawan (me) along!
That moment when a stock rental camry smokes an BMW M4??? 👌😂
Miata dad's next video "I swapped a k20 into my miata" lol
Thumbs up from Western Canada eh!
Basically every car he owns is just super dialed. Its insane.
So... NA build coming soon? I mean, cams, mild headwork and a decent header, could actually be a somewhat cheap build? Ofc the ITB's are expensive. But I would love to see you do a nice NA build.
3:06 not to be THAT guy... but why didn’t he have the rotating assembly balanced? As much work as been done, that seems pretty standard and would help a great deal. Just a thought.
In my opinion, I get it - because his goal was to make as much power as possible without opening up the bottom end, to keep max reliability. I've never seen any garage built, machine shopped performance engine last the same 250,000 miles a stock one can. As soon as you take it apart it's compromised, unless you have a small Mazda factory in your house
Ah I missed that the bottom end wasn’t opened up at all, i figured it had been since he mentioned machine work being done. That’s the only reason I’d mentioned it, plus I can’t imagine it’s never had the bearings done. 🤷🏽♂️ I’ve been wrong about less important things 😂 thanks for the reply dude!
I guess everyone forgot that Jeremy Clarkson & Richard Hammond never used to wear helmets while driving on track. This was literally the most runoff I’ve ever seen at a track and Craig is a big boy. He can make his own decisions.
*thank youu* lmao. Almost no other cars on track, wasn't driving the car for lap records, and there's so much runoff at every corner you couldn't hit anything if you tried except for the pit wall which as you can probably tell I was being extremely safe on that corner.
TheCarPassionChannel we get it all the time with The Slip Angle videos too. It’s pretty funny how mad people get over something that has literally no effect on them what-so-ever...
Mannn! I miss so bad the acceleration of the Red one 400hp, make some race- acceleration videos! Thanks for your videos are so cool
Coming soon!!
Like for those seats
It sounds like an AE86!
Alice in Tankerland I think it sounds like a 2ZZ with PPE exhaust : TougeTime’s build
Go, Greg, Go!
Love it!
please buy and build an NB
just noticed you have no helmet on.. cool that option is there on the race track. =)
Only required if you have no roof. Keep in mind this is a pretty slow track. (Unless you are in some 500 hp monster of course, but those guys usually wear helmets)
Man you have to rent from National. They have much better cars that would definitely be more enjoyable on a track, I mean road. I just rented a Mini Cooper and that go cart was a blast!
Perfection
does anyone know what those tail lights are called? love the way they look
YEEREREE HAAAWWWW
The Camry isn't bad eh. I enjoy driving stock cars now and again , different feel with such long suspension stroke and chassis roll but it's not necessarily bad , just different scenario to adapt as a driver
Sweet!
How was the Camry on track?
It was fun because it was a car on a track, but lame otherwise lol. Zero grip and the paddle shifters might as well be for show
Aren't 2002 blocks the Variable intake valve ones? Is that the BP4W? I thought they stopped the 4W in 2001.
That's the only other miata that idles like mine super aggressive hopping 2020 I can get the 85.5 pistons I want my car at 7700rpm max
Greg you seen your face?!🤣🤣🤣
Interesting track that doesn’t require a helmet.
If you have a closed roof then you do not need a helmet on the slower tracks in Ontario.
It's different at the fast tracks ( The old Mosport track for example) .
hello miata daddy im thinking about getting a 91 miata 200k miles with a hard top for 2750 it looks pretty mint it has a small dent on the fender but it looks good i need your help!
Put a methanol kit on. You'll break 200 and still be completely reliable.
All that track preparation paid off. You look like a pretty much racing driver
You're going to owe him some new rear brake rotors.
This is truly built not bought
Miata daddy
Gaaaah! Bruh, why'd you pull the handbrake after you came off track?
1:24 to 2:00 needs to have a 'car guy to English subtitle'
Is this the same track where gears and gasoline went to on there road trip in a civic and a n mx5?
Yep!
what seats are in this car?
I wouldn't be surprised if the Camry had a slightly slower lap time with a bit of practice.
Haha I ran a 1:37 in the Camry, I believe Quinn ran ~1:24's in his NB
And this is why I will never put my car on Turo.
Don’t put the E-brake up after some laps 😭😭
Also not gonna lie, I definitely would have tracked the rental car 🤣
Can someone please explain what "shaving a 100th of the head" means 😅
I never under the idea of shaving a cars head to begin with so if someone could kindly explain 🙏🏼
It's when you have the bottom of the head machined down (Quinn actually meant a 10th (0.100")). When you do this it makes the combustion chambers slightly smaller and raises the compression ratio of the engine, so you get more horsepower! If you raise the compression a lot you need to use better fuel (higher octane) in the engine. Btw shaving the head by 0.100" is a LOT haha
@@TheCarPassionChannel Didn't think the miata dad himself would answer me!😃 I appreciate it a lot and I appreciate your work 🙏🏼🙏🏼
The truth is I'm not thinking about ITBs for my car, I have an NC. Just did a 2.5 swap with cams 😁 excited to get it tuned and really enjoy it.
But a buddy of mine is thinking about it and I just wanted to explain to him that it's no cake walk and it's not "just easy 60 hp" as he thinks 🤷♂️
Correct me if im wrong 👍🏼
@@raghibfarrash2183 correct, don't expect a huge gain in power from ITB alone. they really work great as part of a system but they are not a magical mod that adds a ton of power
Only 10 to 1? I'd expect closer to 13 with something this baller
If you're talking about compression, it's 12.5:1. The 2002 bottom end is 10:1 before the head shave!
@@TheCarPassionChannel ohhh cool!
There are just so many flavors of miatas, you simply cannot have a big enough garage for them all!.. if Quinn would convert to e85 i bet he would be able to squeeze that last out to break the 200 barrier..
What is itb?
Cool where did u get the tail lights ? Thanks
I think they are garage vary lights, they are available on rev9
is this a 1.6 or 1.8 block?
1.8
No helmet?!
Do they not care if you wear helments or not in Canada? :P
how's this compare to the 2.5L NC?
They are both great fun but the 2.5 is explosive out of the corners in comparison.
What seats are those?
What does the "ITB" stand for ?
Individual Throttle Bodies
@@TheCarPassionChannel Thank you. Love your videos. Hope to get a Miata one day for a fun project, then I will revisit all your videos for Miatas 101. Keep up the great work.
Thats a 1.6 B6 Block?
It's an 01-05 1.8 bottom end, 99-00 head
@@TheCarPassionChannel Ohhh okay thank you, I was so overwhelmed because I thought it's a b6 because I have recently turbocharged my b6ze engine. Awesome video tho :)))
That Camry a v6?
4 cylinder!
Cool traking with no helmet?.... Canadians are rad
What track is this?
everything but the fuel pump??? No radiator re-route..........NOT REQUIRED if you run any aluminium radiator as far as I'm concerned.......obviously doesn't have a over heat problem.
Hey dude was that corolla an 86?
At what time in the video? I can't see any corollas
NA build > turbo build
Was knowing you were going to be driving this car a motivation for studying the track as well as the lap time? 😏😉
I'm not sure why Quinn doesn't tune it on e85 or w/m I bet she'd pull 200whp at that point. Not that it really needs it but just curious why he doesn't do that since 200 was his goal, it still probably has that in it with the 8k rpm.
I think it's mostly because a practical 200 was his goal. He could probably do even slightly more aggressive cams, and definitely more aggressive porting. I'm assuming he doesn't have E85 readily available in his area, but he does have either 93 or 94 which is a stronger fuel than our CA91 for sure.
No E85 in my state! I like convenience so 93 pump it is ;)
@@TheSlipAngle oh gotchas
I'm 93 here too (thankfully). No real e85 readily available around me. @ baltimore MD.
Nice car but you should focus on promoting safety equipment as well. Driving a performance car on track without an airbag, stock 3p harness is the recipe for a broken neck
ITB: The expensive way to go slow
If you want to go fast you don't consider a Miata.
Did you even watch the video before commenting? Quinn just said at 1:14 that he built this car for enjoyment, not lap times.
