Did Fallout 4 Deserve The Hate? I Played it Again in 2024...

  • During my recent playthrough of Fallout 4 I found myself asking whether or not the game deserved some of the criticism it got on launch. The more I thought about the more I realised the issues are just symptoms of a larger problem.

FALLOUT 4 was my first game in the series. Beforehand I'd never heard of the series. I got it as a gift on the PS4, and I enjoyed my playthrough and fell in love with the settlement system and streamline gameplay. As years went on, I'd went back to play FO 3 and NV. I do like them both but my nostalgia hits hard for 4; the opening in the main menu with the power armor. Even through the countless bugs and glitches, still my favorite. Hope they release an "Enhanced" edition soon.

Love you mate: Fallout 4 Rocks !
      All of you guys:
You want (almos) NO crashes, or maybe one CTD every 2 - 3 month, or no CTD at all ?
(all depending on your machine and crazy os environments)
      Here we go !
      Disable ALL auto-saves in F4 in-game settings.
      Yes, ALL of then !
No Autosave on sleep, travel, open-close pip-boy, etc !
      (then use quiksave regularly)
In Fallout 4, No autosaves = no CDT.
      Have Fun !

It's a good game, it was just disappointing for what we came to expect from a fallout game. The dialogue system was a huge mistake. I honestly think if they didn't change that and the skill/perk system, it would've been received a lot better.

The common narrative around F4 was not that it was bad, but it was disappointing. Don’t forget that leading up to its announcement Fallout 4 was one of those mythical games like Half life 3 and GTA 6 until recently. It was one of the most hyped up games ever. And it released the same year as one of the greatest rpgs ever made in Witcher 3. So when we get the game and it is ugly graphically, filled with the usual Bethesda bugs, lacking in the depth of decision making that were in previous games, and just the overall package being not great, that’s a disappointment. The game was severely outclassed by Witcher 3 and even some other games just in that year alone. Not to mention other better games released prior and beyond. Fallout 4 was supposed to be the next genre defining game and it just wasn’t. It’s a good game, but not great and it never will be.

My biggest complaints at launch were the story, the lack of choice and decision making, and the even more watered down RPG elements. Gunplay and world were great. Some of the side quests were good.
But there's more nonsensical plotholes in the main story than swiss cheese, and overall, it felt uninspiring.

The "games journalists suck at games" thing rubs me the wrong way. I think some criticisms of opinions are valid - like the guardian snippet you showed. But firstly, I dont think journalists always get to pick what they review. So no, they wont always be good at the thing they're reviewing. But additionally, if a new player is reading the review, someone who has never played a Bethesda title, that information is still valuable, because the reviews arent just for people who are familiar with the series. New players should know that they get kicked into autosave deathloops, etc.
The criticism that autosaves will boot you into a deathloop is a valid one. It's been an issue for Bethesda since before Skyrim. One they havent taken many proactive steps to actually fix.

I played fo4 right after it got released. Back then I was already a big fan of fallout as I played f2, finished 3 and fell in love with New Vegas.
Fo4 is not a bad game and it was not a bad game even after release but what made me mad was lack of content. Game without mods feels empty, also a lot of story elements feel like missed opportunity. For example the institute. Supposed to be a bogeyman, always lurking powerfull organization.
And at the same time there is not a single institute weapon that would reflect how technologically advanced they are.
That is just one example of things that made me a bit disappointed. Still even with just a few mods I love to play f4 from time to time.

Nice, this was good. I enjoyed the game and still play it regularly, but I can't deny it was a step back in a lot of ways from their previous games. It wasn't enough to make me not play it but I did often feel a sense of loss. It's a shame we're having to wait so long to see if they learned anything from the game that can be applied to the series to make it better in the future. In fact, I'd say these long breaks they take during the development of games in other series is part of the reason the games have gotten worse with each installment rather than getting better like they should have. By the time they start working on the next one the issues of the previous game are a distant memory.

One thing so many people sleep on is the stupid level scaling for every single enemy and the level list of the equipment in the entire game.

Fallout 4 is a good game sure, but it's a really bad roleplaying game.
My first fallout game was fallout 3. I asked my mom for halo 3 and something was lost in translation.
Being a kid with no job when fallout nv came around the amount of different events based on how dumb or smart my character was. and the many different events and endings made playing through the game multiple times actually different. everytime the NPC actually reacted differently based on the kind of character i played. Really left a strong impression.
For fallout 4 that's not the case. No matter what you say to anyone the end result is almost always the same. They're no branching outcomes for any of the companions or factions at all. There's no ending slides of the people you met talking about their life after meeting you.
I never played the fallout games for the looting or gunplay i understand fallout 4 is the easiest game to get into but damn we lost a lot for it

IMO I feel like the problem with alot of bethesda games is the game engine and their refusal to switch or build a new one and, correct me if im wrong but, they just seem to update it which looking at starfield, it results in annoying bugs, ugly graphics, stupid npc's, etc. It is just fundamentally bad and its like bethesda is always a generation behind in graphics just look at the witcher and compare it to FO4. Its the same when you compare almost any other game that released in the same year as starfield and how much better everything, especially npc's, look compared to it. Not to mention that they still havent figured out how to code a car, which ive heard is due to the shit physics engine, aswell as relying completeley on world states which I dont mind but the way they executed it in starfield was HORRIBLE. I thought they meant that you visit a solar system and you can travel around and go to the different planets/ space stations but theres a loading screen when u want to land or exit the solar system, this was not the case unfortunately and it meant the game turned into menu and load screen simulator and it wasnt so bad because I have a m.2 ssd but It was still annoying and immersion breaking and I did actually like the game, I was lucky and never got really any bugs and it may have crashed once which comparing that to how much FONV crashes in just an hour is nothing, however I just got bored and fed up of having to load everytime and it was just very clunky and I ended up getting close to the end of the game but never finishing it. Got a bit sidetracked but they just need to change their engine and maybe hire another team to work on fallout/ get obsidian to do it if they want to capitalize on the show

I don't exactly follow mainstream publications for gaming reviews, but among the nerdy critics it seemed the main point of contention with Fallout 4 was that they'd truly ironed out the last bit of "RPG" still remaining in Bethesda's take on the franchise. Voiced protagonists took away a lot of choice in defining your character and the dialogue options often amounted to 4 different ways of saying "yes, I agree".
I quite enjoyed the game purely as an action-adventure scavenging simulator. The settlement building was janky, but gave you a good reason to explore every location you came across for items you might need for your construction projects. It made me engage with the environment in a way I hadn't before in a Bethesda sandbox.
I also played it 6 months after release, with no unofficial patches applied, and encountered no major bugs. Which I definitely can't say about Skyrim, which *still* requires the fan patch for entire questlines to not break. Maybe I got lucky, but it didn't seem that broken by Bethesda standards.

Pretty much any game that Bethesda release on launch is buggy, mostly due to rushed development but mostly cause the games are so large now and that they push the generation system to their limit that they practically have to be as they need time to fix the issues.
Bethesda games have a rep that overtime the games do get better once fixed but a lot of players are in rush for the next game and most don't stick around for it.
This is why i rarely buy any games at launch anymore cause 99% of the time they will probably have issues so i wait it out and than play it. i might miss the hype train but at least i can play and have fun a lot easier and i can save a little pocket money later too, not to mention i can buy the full dlcs included versions.
which will make it more easier for me in the long run.

Then I started playing and discovered it's actually a really good open world looter shooter with meh to great quests. People say it's less of an RPG then previous games, which may be true a little bit, but it is still an RPG. Its RPG bits have just been simplified and honed to a point where it can come off more mindless, but really it's mostly more refined.
The main story of Fallout 4 isn't great, then again I don't think it ever needed to be or was intended to be super great. The main story of Fallout 4 is just there to get you out into the open world, which is really fun to explore and is filled with some of the best quests in the whole series.
If you've never tried Fallout 4 because of all the hate its gotten, just give it a fair try. I think it's a real Dark Souls 2 situation.

Coming from Skyrim (previous Bethesda game), it was a lesser game. Primarily for one reason for me, the voiced Protagonist and too detailed a back story of the MC. It limited the rpg-ness for me.
Besides all that, on its own merits, it is a wonderful game.

Fallout 4 is a fun game if you play to its strengths. It's an action rpg (light on the rpg), it has interesting POI's and side quests, weapon modding, settlement building, good companion variety including robots, and tons of mods that vastly improve the game. If you're playing it for its story, meaningful player choices, or dialogue options, you'll be disappointed.

Yep I still have a vivid memory of playing it day one and honestly thinking I might have put SPECIAL points in the wrong place or something due to the dialogue being so bad. It still has the best shooting/customization of all the fallouts but imo story/choices matter more for this franchise.

The PARTS of FO4 are fun. The pieces are fun. The GAME PLAY is fun.
But a game is more than gameplay nowadays - unless it's so abstract as to have no need of reason, a game is a foundation of gameplay and engaging systems with the structure of characters, plot, world and all the accoutrements of what amounts to a movie series built on top. The foundation stones that made FO4's foundation were good stones. But the structure built atop never lined up with those core elements, it never 'fit' the foundation they had made.
Same thing can be said of Starfield, only more so. The core elements are essentially fun elements - barring some rough edges for systems Bethesda had little experience with (ship combat, I'm looking squarely at you). But cutting corners, misunderstanding what made elements engaging and fun, and not really matching the game story with the game play means you get ... Starfield.

Explanation of hate on bethesda and current fallout games.
Heads up i use these () as a way to put a message within a sentence; try to follow along, sorry for my lazy management of wording but it gets the point across
They made the recent fallout games; fallout 76 and 4 like "disney" in the way they changed the dark artstyle the older games had to a newer(like the hombs dropped 20 years ago instead of 200)"colorful" look(which many mods for Fallout 4 change that) and they also made the stories garbage; like fallout 76 each npc you meet feels like a happy go lucky person ripped from a disney movie even the raiders, again something to do with the artstyle, writing and voice acting.
That's the main reason people praise New Vegas is because it's npc's, and atmosphere absolutely slays compared to fallout 4's cut content of a story.
Which is funny because New Vegas had ALOT of cut content since it was made in 18 months, which when you think about how the best fallout game bethesda "made" was developed by obsidian reusing some fallout 3 assets; and with how it only took 18 months; fans want to know why they can't just pop out a New Vegas level fallout game(OR a actual dlc like nuka world or far harbor) every four years since obsidian showed its possible in 18 months.
But yeah fans are fed up; especially me; I have been modding fallout and arma as of the past few years and I really don't see why we don't get more; Modders in their bedrooms (not million dollar buildings with expensive equipment to do it right without the creation kit crashing and losing all that was done) are making new games like FOLON and The frontier(let's not talk about the drama behind the frontier plez, not wut this about; I just brought it up because they added drivable cars to the creation engine which again modders in their bedrooms)
The answer simply is; bethesda is a company comprised of greedy lazy developers.
Luckily in the fallout tv show; they actually make it not "disney"

  • @zhulikkulik
    @zhulikkulik 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

There's a very good reason why people love New Vegas despite all its technical issues that still aren't fully resolved.
    It's just a great game.
Unlike Fallout 4, which can't be saved really.
I'll give it last try, I'm searching and downloading a ton of mods to turn it into something enjoyable - balance overhaul, removing legendaries, bringing back skills and proper perks, etc.
The story is still a piece of crap, but at least it can be turned from looter-shooter into something more playable and enjoyable.
If it doesn't work - I'll just wait for something like Fallout Nevada for F4 - a total conversion mod with new story that is more true to original games.

Fallout 4 was not a bad game at all. Yes there were some things that was rough like the majority of the dialogue options having the same results, and even high endgame unbalanced scaling style (100+ levels) where enemies become damage sponges and stronger than you instead of being on the sweetspot and finally some weapons to be underperforming greatly *minigun*. Does it deserve the hate? no, its a good game imo. Could it be better? yes, if they added so much gameplay mechs from fallout nv it will be the best one by far.

I play the og Fallouts 1 and 2 and then 3 and new vegas when they came up. The problem with fallout 4 is that you loose the freedom of choice when role playing, you can see on any conversation a good or a bad option compare it to the clasics or new vegas you got a loot of option and consecuence's even depending on your stats you can have more options.
Fallout 4 losse to much giving the Player character lack of options and alzo a innecesary voice that take's away from your role playing experiecie.

  • @1ButtonDash
    @1ButtonDash 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

it's really not about glitches or bugs, it's that the game story is linear and there's no branching paths. the dialogue system doesn't matter, you can chose any of the 4 options and get the same outcomes. this is why new vegas is considered one of the best in the series, so many dialogue options lead to different outcomes. you can play the game so many different ways too and make specialized characters with certain playstyles because of the perk system. i mean sure you could do a jack of all trades character if jack up your INT but in FO4 they changed the classical S.P.E.C.I.A.L system tremendously to where it felt so dumbed down and very much casualized. These were the 2 big things about FO4 that made the game not liked. The only thing going for the game was the improved engine and combat.

  • @PhewzGlory
    @PhewzGlory 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

No it didn’t deserve the hate. People expected a Half Life 3 type of experience and those people only have themselves to blame for hyping it up so much. With the kind of culture we have now everything will either be considered mid or flat out amazing and at the bare minimum, trash.
