  • This was a call on a walk in freezer that was not getting cold enough, i found that the expansion valve was not working properly and caused the superheat to get too low. I made a temporary adjustment and got the superheat higher until we can submit a quote to replace the valve.

    Thanks for showing the flashing sight glass Chris.
    And I love the big picture diagnoses.
    I wish more techs used the same approach when diagnosing.
    My favorite is the guy who tells the customer it's going to be a quick fix cause its just a bad fuse. He acquires said fuse and to find a bad transformer or other component .....
    Customer will never have confidence in that tech again ...
    Thanks for making your videos public and sharing your knowledge and approach.

    You could always use your pinch off tool on the liquid line after the receiver outlet if you needed to change the drier. I bought one after doing a pressure switch on a Mani and have used it at least 15 times that year, mostly to weld taps onto reach ins while they’re running because the saddle taps are worthless

    • @44R0Ndin
      @44R0Ndin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I've seen one of HVACR VIDEOS vids where he used a saddle tap on a piece of equipment that didn't have service ports.
      I'm not a HVACR technician, but I do auto repair so I do have the occasional contact with vehicle AC systems. IMO, saddle taps should only ever be used to remove the charge from equipment that doesn't have service ports, and never left in place. That rubber you wrap around the pipe will degrade, and those screws are all that's compressing the rubber to seal it against the pipe, and a dirty pipe won't seal as well, and... well a leak is basically inevitable, and likely created when you install it. So it's best to use it as little as possible, and never left in the system as a permanent fitting.
      If I was working on something that didn't have service ports, and I needed access, I'd use a saddle tap. Once I was done, I'd recover the charge, then sweat in a pair of service ports. I don't like the idea of a pinch off tool on copper lines as it puts the copper thru so much stress that I'd never trust that section of pipe again (work hardening and micro cracking are likely at the corners of the pinched-off pipe). As far as I've seen from watching many videos, when I see a pinched off copper line it's also sweated shut. That's acceptable for long term use, but I only trust it because I've seen them that way from the factory.
      Even in plumbing saddle taps are a common source of water leaks, usually behind the fridge as some DIY'er decided that was the quick and cheap way to get a water line connected to the fridge's ice maker. The leak can happen any time from under a month to a couple years after installation, but it WILL eventually happen.

    We all find the brands/models that we have good experiences with.. Thats what we stick with because we can say with no reserve that they will do the job and serve the client well... Thats true of whatever business you are in... And the way it should be.... If you only sell what's cheap or what makes the most profit right now... That a recipe for disaster... Typically a client will trust you and when your recommendation proves true... You keep that client for life.. and equally important... they send referrals... There no better business than repeat and referrals... The cost of client acquisition is free (or cheap) and they are usually the best clients.... Once again... This is true whatever line of work you are in... Thanks for the content..

      really similar to valves i deal with in plumbing/water lines at work, it is called "exercising the valve", which oddly enough an electrician contractor taught me for breakers, but he said plumbing is same, they all like to be turned on all the way and turned off all the way- back and forth a few times- at least once a year, or they get gummed up or rust or whatever, so at least once a year turn whatever valves you have folks.... it has worked wonders for the old building i take care of, saves lots of replacement work and when a pipe breaks, the valve actually shuts off the water

    What’s wrong with negative superheat??? 🤣🤣🤣
    I prefer the Sporlan TX Valves too. And I agree with you about the wonky placement of the liquid service valve. I suppose that manufacturer installs filters that never need to be changed, so no need for a King valve then... good video, thanks Chris.

    • @44R0Ndin

      "filters that never need to be changed" that's a good one!
      Just like you don't have to change the oil in your lawnmower anymore, just add more when it gets low.
      I still change the oil on my small engine equipment, and I bet I won't have to buy one for another 10 years (that's the secret, they can't sell more "durable goods" if they don't break, so they build them to break right after the warranty is finished!)

    All this behavior makes perfect sense. You had a little extra oil in the discharge from the low superheat and gas through that stuck txv. That coil was nicely insulated with that extra oil. Damn good get it done method of cranking the valve spring to both extremes, excellent work.

    I'm a newbie at this, so confirm if I'm thinking this through correctly.
    The flashing sight glass was because the faulty expansion valve was flooding the evaporator and suction line with liquid refrigerant. With too much refrigerant now on the suction side, the liquid line receiver ran low on refrigerant. Is this correct?

    • @joshuapellerito1341
      @joshuapellerito1341 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That is correct. Most freezer TXVs are pressure limiting, so as the evaporator is flooded and the liquid refrigerant is flooding back to the compressor, it fills the suction line with refrigerant causing the system to appear long on charge when in fact its perfectly fine.

    Absolutely awesome videos and recaps. I been in the residential AC 5yrs When I worked with my old boss we did single evp and condensers. Recently got a lead to go see a customer. He had a parallel Hussmann cabinet. The guy who worked on it move so he says. Had 4 compressors. 1999. Only one compressor was working, he wanted a new and wanted to replace one compressor, 3 were bad. Customer gave me a hard time about adding freon, 55lb system 404A. It had 4 cases and one walkin chill box. But anyway. Do you have any videos on multi compressors systems or multi evp running off of one condenser. Sun ding liquid through the headers or scrolls can ruin a compressor as well. You want 100% gas going back through the compressor discharge. That’s why we take subcool and super-heat. Same goes the other way. If we have a sub-cool that is off with a flashing sight glass we are ruining the TXV since the TXV needs 100% liquid to work correctly. When gas goes though the TXV the valve body will jump more than needed to. It can destroy the TXV. Especially the way they are made these days.

    Couple of questions if you don't mind: That sight glass indicated moisture in the system, probably due leaks over the years and charging without purging and what not. Wouldn't you want to change out that drier before adding any gas? also 404a is a blended refrigerant, would you want to recover that gas and then add in fresh 404a to ensure we didn't fractionalize too much? or was the process to charge in some gas first, see if that cleared up the temperature issue and then put in for a bid to replace drier, valve, what not. Thank you for the video and conversation.

    I’m not sure if it’s been mentioned in the above comments so i apologise if I’m repeating anyone else. The equaliser line is positioned incorrectly, when the valve & orifice are sized correctly (hopefully always) that will cause you problems every time. Obviously there is some liquid Cary over through the equalising line and when your bulb is positioned down circuit from that your creating a false superheat causing the valve to shat down equivalent initially then behave IRAtic with the fluxeration and what not.

    Hi, Chris, just watching your video and I think I’m having similar issues wit subway sandwich maker , R404 and pressure looks good, but temperature is staying at 47 , 35 low 225 high condenser coil is clean , made turn few to the left and more to the right , but no changes on pressure at all, took out all refrigerant and weigh charged of 25 oz. But temperature maintains 48 degrees, would it be the TXV ?
    Thank you in advance!

    Have a new WI Frz installed in NOV 2020. 2 weeks ago I got my first call saying box temp 20°. Bubbles in sight glass so I cleared it with 1lb 404. My diagnosis was that whoever installed it did not properly charge it and are just now seeing a problem due to higher ambient temps. I've done a leak check as well. Am I on the right track?

    They get a second quote and that guy says the TXV is working fine, temp controller and solenoid are working fine, the contractor is dark but it working. So, the client doesn't want to spend a thousand bucks if he doesn't have to. If it keeps working what the client feels is fine then they assume you were wrong or trying to dip them off. A month to three later if it acts up again and the client uses garage logic and pegs you as an over do it sort of guy. How do you counteract client misjudgment like I just outlined above? My outline is a common occurrence in misjudgment around my part of the country.

    Riley: From my HVAC knowledge as an autistic 13yr old, Superheat is very important. Dangerously low superheat can make liquid reach the compressor and potentially kill it. Dangerously high superheat signals that the system is low on refrigerant. - Riley
