    Vibtage big box RAT after a Timmy V2 is the way to go for the headroom on the gain, its superior to the screamer, can fuzz the Rat all the way to Doom with humbuckers or P90s but can can tame a telecasters high frequencies with the EQ. It's a super versatile stack and does the job of 4+ pedals.

      That sounds amazing... I've been on the lookout for a well-priced, good condition big box Rat for ages now. They don't seem to come up in my part of the world too often! But yes, I can't wait to try all that :)

    As for me Rat is absolutely self-sufficient pedal. Now I use Warlus Iron Horse v2, it has a little bit more bass than stock, also i had jam rattler and tested it with different chips, rat2 1998, turbo rat 1990. I can say that op07 ,is pretty decent chip, don't chase for lm308n. So, i think rat works fine without and additional drives before it.

      Great comment and suggestions, thank you! For me also, I didn’t stack the Rat for the longest time because it’s simply amazing on its own. I need to try the Iron Horse one day!

    I use my Rat II primarily for stacking huge sounding unruly Fuzz pedals. It tightens up the fuzz and covers over anytime a Fuzz decides to choke, overly sputter or drop out. In short it makes them playing in a band live proof. You should do a show on that. The before and after with some Fuzz pedals is astonishing. I find using them with OD's is useful but seldom does an OD sound a lot different than another since the Rat just takes over where as with a heavy fuzz it can shape it but not overwhelm it.

    • @RichWordsMusic
      @RichWordsMusic  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Fuzz is definitely the next thing I need to try with my Rat - it sounds like the Rat will solve all the problems I seem to have when using fuzz pedals! I assume a fuzz would need to strictly go before the Rat as well, although I may drop one in after just to hear the effect. And yes, I will do a video on this too. Very excited to start trying over the next few days! Cheers for the tips as usual!

      And also put the RAT before a Big Muff (like nano Green Russian EHX)... You keep the huge bottom end of the Muff, but - and it's the secret - you have to set the RAT with minimum distortion possible (I used under 9h, close to 8... yes it's a very low setting !), volume at unity gain, the treble-cut set as you like (for me 13h -14h)... and you obtain a sort of range masterish sound. It cut the mix like hell 🤩

    Maybe it's my phone speaker, but I feel the Rat does not need any of these very fancy OD-s as a booster. They do very little to the pedal I can hear. Thanks for uploading this !!!

    • @RichWordsMusic
      @RichWordsMusic  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I know what you mean! Sometimes the boost effect is very subtle, especially through the medium of TH-cam and a phone speaker. It's definitely more noticeable in the room, that's for sure, but like you say - the Rat is so gnarly on its own that you can totally get by without any other boosts for it (as I always did before making this video, in fact!). Cheers and rock on :)

    i use a BMP after rat abd turn everything down use it for a tone and volume. warms up the tone, i use 4.5k output pickups bridge pickup raised almost all the way up...i run it into an 260 watt ampeg bass amp 4x12 320 watt cab and a 475 watt 3x15 cab... shits brutal but clear, dynamic. the rat is all middle settings and i adjust the distortion for different songs. sometimes i turn the volume up on the rat to get more distortion and highs.

    This is an interesting test, I usually use my Rat clone for ballsy single action grit, never thought of plugging my other drives into it, for some reason. I'm having interesting results! Great idea!

    • @RichWordsMusic
      @RichWordsMusic  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is, isn't it! I can't claim this is in any way an original idea (people have clearly been doing this for decades) but because the Rat always has enough gain on tap for me on its own I just never thought to run something else into it... but I am happy I did! The next thing to try is other drives/boosts after the Rat - and then Rat + FUZZ 😎

    Found it dificult to hear significant difference in tone, mainly gain.

    • @RichWordsMusic
      @RichWordsMusic  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They're subtle for sure - try it with headphones if you didn't before, and that might give you a little more in terms of differences. That said, these drive pedals are all not too dissimilar, so they do do similar things when pushing the Rat... I recently did another video where I stuck the Lightspeed, a fuzz and a boost into the Rat, and that brought about much bigger tonal differences!

      @michelvondenhoff9673 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RichWordsMusic The ME-80 is very nice (ergonomically maybe the best multi I can think of). Try to keep the pedals to an exquisite minimum. RAT was a must have and thinking of a dedicated compressor and maybe auto-wah (AW-3 takes exp. pedal for regular wah-ing, just made that up). Nice channel and enjoy your gear! Saw a video of the Waza Fuzz, seriously silent and fuzzy.

      @@RichWordsMusic One of my pedals ( Animalizzer fuzz) can sound RAT-alike with the proper settings, and I was stunned with the sound I could get when I fed the Animalizzer signal into a Red Llama-type circuit that I am designing. Is it alway necessary to run the Rat as a distortion? I would love to see a germanium fuzz (GTR pot down low) > Rat > Klon type. I have the Wampler Tumnus Deluxe and I have a sneaky feeling that a Rat between my mini fuzz face and the Tumnus would make a great fat clean/breakup tone.

    • @RichWordsMusic
      @RichWordsMusic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, Rats are great as cleanish boosts too - so try it! They are a little tricky to dial in at those points on the Distortion knob, but you can do it no problem. I'm actually on the lookout at the moment for a "low gain Rat" pedal, if such a thing exists, because I love that sound so much!
