Don't forget guys, check out the description for more info ⬆ Also to enable playback on your computer, you may need to convert the file format from .mp4 to .mov. I did this for the footage captured in the video. I used cloudconvert.com/mp4-to-mov for the conversion which only took a couple of minutes.
Hi Nick. I now have AR on my car and am about to order Dashcam. Does it matter which usb port in the car you insert the USB memory stick? I have ordered the memory stick and adapter lead.
Hey Nick thanks for the videos really good I spoke to merc about this before I bought it and they told me that it does record when the vehicle is parked if it notices movement or vandalism. Also my alarm was triggered a while ago when I checked my usb it had recorded it ..
I already optioned my AMG a45s and using it all the time, it records to usb flash, great for security reasons. But it doesnt start recording automatically, that feature needs to be added. İ sometimes forget to start recording, not something i wanted to forget...
@@naveedahmed5226 no its an extra camera. The camera for the front facing is on the front grill. The camera for the Aug navigation is in the windscreen, it's this camera that you need
Sadly no car manufacturer has fitted a rear camera to the back for recording (as far as I know). Camera would need to be on the inside so it doesn’t get dirty.
For those of us without augmented reality Mercedes does have a retrofit own brand dual channel device. Unfortunately it is insanely priced at over £800 fitted but I do understand it doesn’t invalidate warranties!
Great video thank you. Mercedes need to enable this to start with the engine though at the very least and given that my last Bmw X7 had it fitted to come on from start up makes me thinks Mercedes has missed a trick.
720p and no sound - that takes me back. I think it was my first dashcam, back in 2009. That was only 720p too. Although it did have sound, and cost about 40 quid.
After living with this for the last six months + I've decided to fit an aftermarket unit. The main reason is the length of time before it is available after starting the car. Not only do you have to turn it on each time you want to use it but you have to wait 1-2 mins after starting the car before it sees the USB stick (I've tried several). A great idea in practice ruined by the implemention.
@@prithvim8743 I haven't yet to be honest. The Mercedes built in unit is a great idea ruined by the health and safety / gdpr legal police. A bit like the mercedes service plan where they no longer email you but you have to signup to an online portal. I just never renewed it due to the hassle, just madness. I got an email this morning asking me to re-buy the online services with a link that took me to an online store which didn't work. Tried it from my Mercedes App and the store isn't available yet in the UK. Laughable. The GLE 43 however is the best car I have ever had. I love it !
That’s great timing for me! Waiting for delivery of a new E Class Coupe with MBUX this week and I was going to pull the dash cam from my C Class Coupe to go in the new car. I wasn’t looking forward to removing all the cable and trying to install it again. Disappointing you have to turn it on every time and the 720 resolution is not impressive either. Plus £200 is steep for just a software upgrade.
Agreed. There should be a way to set it up and forget it. You are also correct on the antiquated 720p resolution, and 30 fps is just too slow to clearly freeze the action.
The dash cam is good but it fails on several things: 1) You can't use it when you first start the car. Sometimes it will take up to a minute to see the memory stick. 2) It's not automatic, you have to remember to turn it on each time. 3) The quality isn't too bad but not as good as after market ones (still good enough for the job though) 4) When playing videos back on a Mac you need to use VLC as it's not a standard .mp4 video (VLC is free)
Yes it’s just some computers can’t playback the files the multimedia system produces. So you can either convert them or I believe VLC player can play them 🤓
@@npoleary Yes that's correct. VLC on a Mac will play them. You can of course view them in the car. No fix for having to wait 60 seconds + to be able to use it nor it being automatic. The number of times I've wanted to look at footage and then realised I hadn't started it. Seriously flawed and I would have expected better from Mercedes (otherwise a superb car though).
I see it as a very limited feature. I opted for the MB dashcam attached to windscreen and rear that records even whilst car is parked. The built-in dashcam is retrograde compared. Very detailed and factual as usual. Thank you Nick.
Hi Alan , do you mean the onboard DCam in this video in not really worth it? You mentioned having a MB ( MBenz ??) Fitted - was this instead of the onboard dash cam ? Cheers
Thank you for the clear presentation Nick. But I can see 3 issues with Mercedes’ approach: 1. One buys the car, pays for it fully, then one needs to pay further (subscription) fees to use a functionality the car (he/she) already paid for, has already built in! The new trend manufactures start following, trying to extract more money by restricting already built in functionality, simply enrages me. I own a C220cdi and before this, I had an E350 CDI. If this trend continues, I will not buy another Mercedes (or other car with subscriptions), as a matter of principal. Mercedes, BMW, Toyota, et al, should realise that not all customers are going to put up with this! Mercedes will make a few hundred pounds extra (in subscriptions) from some customers and loose a few thousand pounds from others (who will not buy a car, assuming there are other people with my way of thinking). 2. Having to start the system every time you start the car is a big drawback. This, I am guessing, could easily be fixed, as it is a software issue. 3. Not having a rear camera is a drawback. A rear end collision will not be recorded. A number of after sales solutions offer this option. Mercedes should, as well. Keep up the good work! I find your videos very informative!
Hey Takis, thank you! Glad you enjoy the videos! Yes I have seen car manufacturers start to do this but it’s a new concept. The way I see it, it all depends on your viewpoint and for certain people, subscription based things are okay but for other items they’re not. For example, paying for Live Traffic, or an app on a yearly basis might be okay but when it comes to a subscription for heated seats or making a car go faster, that’s when it may raise an eyebrow and people may disagree. If however you weren’t aware that the car even had a feature but a year later it was added you might be okay with it. It certainly is interesting! I’d love to make a video on that topic in the future but curious to see where it all goes! For Dashcam and more specifically “On-board recording equipment”, it’s heavily regulated and completely separate to 3rd party dashcams. Hopefully it’ll change in the future! I’ll keep the videos coming! 👀
@@npoleary thank you for your comment. My personal viewpoint is that paying a subscription for an ongoing service, like live traffic, is justifiable. The service has a cost for the service provider and I have no issue paying for it, if I want it. Where I take exception is when manufacturers try to charge for functionality the car I fully paid for, already has, such as heated seats in BMWs and traffic cameras in the Mercedes. My C class is 2019 model, so it doesn't have it. But if it had it and Mercedes wanted to charge me to use it, I would be furious. If during purchasing was made aware that this is a possibility for the future, I would not buy the car. This is the only way to make manufacturers think twice. I wouldn't buy a BMW if they wanted me to pay a subscription to use the heated seats, nor a Toyota, if they expected me to pay to use my remote control key.
Yes, exactly it’s where people stand If you pay for a feature then it should be available but if you hadn’t paid for a feature and were given the upgrade, then that could be okay? It’s splits everyone 50:50! 😅 Tesla have done it for ages with their auto pilot, all cars “have it” but if you didn’t select it at factory then you can add it afterward.
@@npoleary for a car feature (e.g. heated seats), if it was an optional extra when the car was new and I did not select it then, but I want it now, I would be prepare to consider paying a one off fee to enable it. Not a subscription, at any level. A subscription would only be justifiable if there is a meaningful ongoing cost to the service provider (for example, an infrastructure to provide live traffic updates). In the second case, one makes his/her own choice. Personally, I did not renew the Mercedes live traffic service as I use Waze. But I could consider such a service.
Be aware it has some massive limitations. I'm going to use an aftermarket unit after I bought the Merc one. It won't start until upto 1 min into the drive as the USB fills up and you have to turn it on each time in the menu and I often forget. If you can wait and remember each time then fine. Quality is good enough though.
Great video, very informative. All the dealer could do was point me to the owners manual that talked about using the dashcam but not where to find the app. Learned that from your video, downloaded the app and installed it. Works great. Thanks
Hi Nick, a video I have been waiting for! I currently have a nextbase 522gw dashcam which records in 1440p and I prefer due to the picture quality. 200quid for a 720p dashcam isn't ideal. Shame because the camera quality for reversing is immaculate but that isn't included in this dashcam setup. I'm still waiting to get my car due to the chip shortage but will definitely be using the nextbase dashcam instead.
Aha we have the same dashcam! Haha you might have seen it in the video! 😇 Yeah I guess the camera was designed for augmented reality but then someone thought Dashcam could work by incorporating it in. Not sure if it’s limited by software or not. Ah okay, hopefully you won’t have to wait too long!
Your videos are extremely well done and ultra useful. Thanks for the work and time you put in (from a new CLA user who - thanks to you - is a little less bamboozled).
On my 2022 GLC I had the surprise to see that the dashcam can be set to start recording automatically. It's not set by default and it's pretty hidden: in the dashcam app settings, while in the loop recording tab, click on the small cogwheel in the lower screen. On the page that opens there's a big button on the lower screen saying something like "start camera automatically when you start the car". Tick that and the camera will start automatically. This only works in loop recording mode, though...which is not a big deal, since that's how a dashcam is suppose to work anyway.
Ah awesome Catalin, where about’s are you based? Hard to tell in the comments 😅 When I last used it, it was a manual start only which I presume is still the case for the UK
@@npoleary Thanks for the reply, Nick! I'm located in Romania. The car is a week old - that is why I mentioned the year and model, because there might be a possibility that this feature appeared in the latest software update. Cheers!
Multa bafta!
When compared to all the other high-grade cameras available, this is SUB-STANDARD. Fancy not being able to have it automatically record? How moronic!! Mercedes should be including a world-class camera recording system in their cars at the time of manufacture - not throwing crumbs to their customers as this add-on is. BTW, this upgrade remains UNavailable in Australia as of June 2023. But, thanks to Nick for another outstanding video.
Hey thanks for leaving a comment! 🤓 Ah so this camera was never designed to be dashcam in the first place. It’s main purpose is Augmented Reality for the Sat Nav, Dashcam was added years later when regulations in countries allow it. I’m hoping that newer models might have an improved Dashcam functionality, I’ll try again soon! 🤓
I have the dashcam and I am, truly disappointed. Mercedes-Benz UK cannot fob off dealerships with the pathetic excuse of features being 'country specific'. We are 'specifically' in the UK and having a dashcam automatically start when the engine is running is a basic feature for MUCH cheaper cameras. I say our dealers should let Mercedes UK know in no uncertain terms that customers are NOT happy!! Great videos Nick and thank you for all the excellent hard work keeping us updated
I was very hopeful when the video came up on my watch list But. £200 for a lower quality recording that doesn’t start automatically and doesn’t cover parking is way too high. I would consider it if it was a £25 or less option . It should have a option to have auto start in favourites. Thanks for your great videos and tips, one of my favourite TH-cam channels 👍.
Thank you! This is exactly why I thought to make a video on it. I wish it did have auto start but due to regulations in certain countries it won’t. I believe it’s 720p because either a hardware or a software limitation. At least people know the ins and outs of it now 🤓
Thanks for this one Nick, I thought this would be the answer to my needs as I've been nervous about getting a dash cam fitted to my 2021 B Class 250e by a 3rd party because of quality and warranty fears. I therefore paid my £200 and got the software downloaded. I am however very disappointed so I'm exercising my 14 day cancellation entitlement tomorrow. The image quality is very low - I cannot for example read most other vehicles numberplates on playback. The non auto start is a pain to remember to initiate each time I start up. There is an awful reflection of the dashboard top in the playback image especially in bright sunlight because the camera lens is a small distance from the windscreen glass. Worst of all, however, having had a perfect Mercedes experience since delivery of the car 3 months ago, this has not been the case in the 3 days since the software was downloaded onto my car. I have received a "Function not available" startup message on about 50% of my journeys AND I have experienced 2 very strange electronic 'failures' since the software was added which have affected the whole vehicle during recharging - one seemed outwardly to have killed all the car electronics (no alarm lights or anything else showing internally and no response when I tried to unlock the doors using the handles) thankfully everything started up when I used the key. The other resulted in all the head and rear lights being on when the car was parked inside my garage (they were not on when I left the vehicle). I'm sorry to say that Mercedes have not got this right at all. My only question therefore remains how can I get a decent camera system installed?
@@bobsiddle6454 according to my local dealership if you go to a professional dash cam fitting place, it’s still covered. I would speak to a auto electrician or Halfords. If they don’t wire into the system and use something like a fuse splitter that does not alter the electrical system. It’s okay. But ask the questions and make sure they know what they are doing Before fitting.
Hey Bob, honestly that’s exactly why I made a video and of course showed an unedited demo at the end so people can see if it’s right for them. But yes you can email them if you wish to cancel it. Honestly the best way is either a 12V socket if you have one or the USB ports (or USB-C). Yes you will have to run wires round but 5 metres is plenty for a car for a front one.
I got all excited, Until I saw your video Nick. I'll wait for higher res, mph and auto record. Meantime Nextbase Front & Rear are still streets ahead unfortunately :(
Hey Richard, aha one of the reasons why I produced a video to let everyone know how it works and what it’s like 🤓 Sadly in built systems are heavily restricted by localised laws on privacy etc. Some countries don’t even allow this, even the UK was in this position last year but had recently changed. By hey, it’s a step in the right direction , who knows the next one might have loads of features! 🤓
No worries Erin! Although not sadly not on every car! You can check on the Mercedes me store (long as your car is linked to your Mercedes me account) 🤓
Hi Nick! Is there an option to keep this camera recording after leaving the vehicle unoccupied? If not that defeats the purpose of someone who might damage or try to steal your vehicle. Thanks.
Hi Anthony, no it only works in the way I showed in the video. It will only work when you press record at the start of each journey. It’s one of the major factors to why I made this video so people can see if this new service is right for them. There are other dashcams (3rd party ones) that will offer G-Sensors, parking modes and higher resolutions but it is really nice to see an integrated solution now. Let’s hope an update comes out in the future that can add these things!
Think mine is NTG 7 so might be different to the video, but I don't need to start the Dash Cam manually as such, like tapping into the apps etc. each time I switch on the ignition. It won't start without any interaction at all but after initially setting it up in the way I want it to record (one time only) then via 'Hey Mercedes' I just say 'Dash Cam' and she replies 'I'm switching on Dash Cam recording' she then finds the USB and switches on recording in whatever mode I initially set it to, be that Loop or individual recording. I find this no problem at all which I can do while belting-up/initial manouvering before setting off.(I also get wide eyes from any first time passengers in a Merc😄) In someways I find this better than fixed auto record for if I am manouvering say on my own driveway or maybe just sat a while with the ignition/engine on waiting for someone, or somewhere Dash cam footage isn't at all necessary the USB is not getting clogged up with lots of unneccessary images. .... PS. I set my format to exFAT which allows generic playback via windows without need for 3rd party playback software and set the file allocation unit size to 128kb but that was for a 128Gb drive and will vary so if not sure best to choose 'device default' for the stick you have, you can always up it if a problem. The windows formatting tool won't allow you to go over whatever the stick can handle.
Hi Guys, glad you all love the video! I’ve had a huge amount of requests to help with locating it on the Mercedes me store. UK USERS ONLY: bit.ly/MercedesmeUKDashcam Really sorry I won’t be able to assist with exact specifics as to why you might not have it yet but I have heard you need to check: REQUIREMENTS FOR DASHCAM: MBUX Multimedia System (Generation 1 or Generation 2) MBUX Augmented Reality for Navigation (Code U19) Purchased Mercedes me Dashcam Service FU3 Update (completed at a Mercedes-Benz Workshop) USB Memory Stick If you can't see it, it can be for a number of reasons such as the equipment in your Mercedes, it may not have had a software update yet or it genuinely may not be available where you live. Best thing to do is speak with the Mercedes me team and they may be able to point you in the right direction. You can get them on the Mercedes me app, top left and then press help.
Use this link, *then* log into Mercedes Me. It will then tell you if your car is compatible. I have read elsewhere that this was a feature that was going to be offered on certain 2021 vehicles - sadly it seems unavailable on my 2020 EQC. For those asking, in the UK it costs £200 for permanent activation - no subsequent subscription or renewal required.
What’s slightly misleading by Mercedes is the message you get if you can’t order it yet is that it’s because of the hardware on your car. When we have seen one person get a software update from 063 and then suddenly they were able to buy it. It’s almost like it needs U19, 549 and 080 software and something else I haven’t figured. When asking Mercedes support; you get told it’s because you don’t have 21U. Yet 21U is only added to the Vedoc when you buy Dashcam on the store or get it factory enabled.
The truth is there is a software glitch on Mercedes side and they are fobbing people off because they haven’t the foggiest and no point advising people to ring Mercedes me, I just have he told me I need customer service or main dealer because there is an issue with my car and many other cars who have all the necessary hardware and software but still unable to get it and it appears it seems to be the ones who had 080 software factory installed like mine.
Another shortcut is assigning to the hand gesture shortcut, if you have that feature. Point two fingers under the sensors, starts recording for me. It will be nice if we could play back the video on Mercedes.
I wish the camera has auto start, higher resolution and cloud storage. Also would be nice if you can open your phone and see the camera in real time. Missing so many things to be a good dashcam.Tesla is 10 years ahead any other car seriously 😕
After watching your video, I called my dealer to see how to subscribe and how much it would cost. The answer is rather interesting: in the US (at least in Texas) there is no fee. Just plug in the USB drive and turn it on. And yes, I just did it and it's up and running. Incidentally, the map program is also free. My car is a 2021 GLA 250.
Hi Nick, I have a less than 1 year old CLA 250 with augmented reality, but the Mercedes me store doesn't give me the option for dash cam. Is the CLA dashcam not available?
I've got a CLA 200 Prem Plus, reg'd in 2021 and have the option in the store. My wife has a GLA Prem (not plus), reg'd in 2021, with aug reality etc. but not showing in the store.
Yeah sorry guys, I wouldn’t know exact specifics on why you might not have it. Best thing to do is speak with the Mercedes me team and they may be able to point you in the right direction. Tap on the top left of the app, then press help and they’ll be able to advise.
I have the GLA 250e premium plus with MBUX U19 & 548 but still have no option to buy, why Mercedes have to complicate things? I even have the latest software 080 and have dashcam disabled in my car menu so its 100 percent compatible
Hi Nick, just to let you know that i purchased the App & it's all up and running. i bought a 128gb dual drive usb and that is recording the dash cam footage. Have another 64gb dual drive installed and that is for my music playback. The dash cam has been added to my favourites as per your instructions, so at the moment all is good. Thank you 👍🏻
9:36 apologies if anybody else has said this (no time to read every comment) - if you use VLC Media Player on your PC, Mac or even iPad, the videos will play natively, ie no need to convert 👍
I` ve waited for this soooo long and now that is here i will not install it. I had a Vantrue dashcam installed temporarily that records up to 4k with sound and has front, back AND inside camera. So buying a 720p dashcam from Mercedes that i have to activate in every drive and it does not cover any parking bumps its next to useless for me. Its good to have the option for the people who actually need it but i think it could cost less in an ideal world.
Hi Nick. Thanks for the video. Does the dash cam feature impact on the camera being used for augmented reality on the sat nav ie can it do both at the same time or does the dash cam feature override the sat nav feature if its activated?
I just transferred my old dash cam to my new C-class the only issue was the wire goes into the central holder thing in front of the round mouse as needs to be connected to cigarette lighter. Cost for installation free (myself), cost of dash cam £30 a few years ago when i bought it. advantage : starts recording every time my car starts.
Hi Nick, I always enjoy your videos. I think the only thing it has going for it is it’s inbuilt. Unfortunately it doesn’t record sound and it’s only 720p. For the price you could get one with a much better spec. And it doesn’t have a park mode either. Do you have to pay for it every year?
Hey Peter, yes you’re absolutely right, there are dashcams out there that record in 1080 60FPS or even 4k The built in option is amazing but yes I wish it was a higher resolution too, I’d imagine it’s a software or hardware limitation. The payment is for a one time activation, so it stays with the car 🤓
Recommend the Kexin flash stick - tiny with USB B and C combined and plugs into my computer (USB-B) and iPad Pro(C) and with a tiny usb to lightening adapter I found can also plays back on my IPhone. Have found the operation of the camera issue free and like the neat setup despite the previously mentioned known about drawbacks and am very pleased I made the purchase
Thanks for the quick turn around on this video Nick. I was waiting until you did a review before buying it. It does seem that there is a trade off between convenience of a built in camera and top specs of a separate camera. It will be interesting if MB add some settings in the future, such as changing to MPH. Now I just need to find a tiny USB drive/adapter/cable to use it with the (never used) rear USB sockets.
No problem Dave! Yeah as soon as I heard of this, I kind of dropped everything and jumped straight onto it to show what it can do. Glad you liked the video! 🤓
@@npoleary I went ahead and bought the dashcam for my A Class, but on my favourites menu there is no option for Apps. Also when doing a long press on “Loop Record” or “Individual recording” and press save as favourite I get the message “No function available for saving”. Have you heard of this before?
Hi Dave, no I haven’t The only experience I’ve had with it is literally in the video and a few mins before. I bought it the day before and had to wait a little while for it to activate. I know specs to vary from car to car so it might not be the same for everyone as there can be different versions etc
Excellent video, Nick. Here in Germany, the dashcam can still not be activated. However, only 720p at only 30 fps is not enough either. - Thanks for working on the topic including the footage.
Hi Nick, I've got my A250e imported from Germany. I can not activate the dashcam since it a "German software". Can the dealer change this ? I live in Belgium. Thanks in advance for your reply. Greetings from Belgium 🇧🇪🇧🇪🇧🇪🇧🇪
Really sorry Theo, I’m not sure. I’ve never worked on them myself on a technical point of view. Best thing to do is get in touch with your local Mercedes and ask 🤓 Hopefully they’ll be able to point you in the right direction 👍🏼
I have augmented reality, but according to my MB dealer I should also have the function that allows you to operate certain functions with hand movements. When you have this function in combination with AR, you can use the dashcam. Unfortunately I only have AR so I can't use the dashcam.
Nice, clear and simple to follow Nick, good stuff. I’ve got NTG 5.5 and understand that this integrated Dashcam isn’t an option for me. However I looked at having a Dashcam fitted (front and rear) by a professional company so that it was hard wired so it wouldn’t lose power when the car is parked up, plus I didn’t want wires draped around and plugged into a usb point . When I spoke to my Main Dealer about my intention they told me it would invalidate my 3 year new car warranty so I didn’t go ahead. Do you know if their answer is correct?
Hey Captain Scarlett, This could be, I know it’s a bit tricky at the moment with these couple of options and of course the choice is yours. You can get of course get a dashcam hardwired but as the “internals” of the car will have been tampered with, it could invalidate the warranty. In new cars I would suggest carefully putting wires round the outside of the top of the windscreen all the way round and eventually to a USB port or 12V socket. This means your warranty is still intact.
Hmmm, I would have thought they should retain their position but sadly not managed to use dashcam on NTG 7. Hopefully soon as my car has it so I’ll be covering it in the future!
My new Mercedes A-class didn't come with the augmented reality chip installed yet due to the European chip shortage. Will I need this chip installed to get the dash cam feature?
Not sure why I would have to change the mbux head unit? Mercedes told me that they will simply install the chip once available. Just wondering if the dashcam will work without the augmented reality chip currently or if I need to wait til it gets installed.
Some countries (eg Austria, I think) actually BAN dash-cams: and it's illegal to even carry them, even if they are off and unplugged.... Again, may change, but a worry if it becomes a requirement for your insurance!
MB UK are saying if you cannot see the option to buy dashcam when you should do, go to dealership and ask for a freshup 3, FUP3 update, which apparently is the fix.
Hey Asif, yes I have heard this too and subsequently have added that to the list of requirements for the dashcam 🤓 FU3 only came out very recently so probably didn’t exist when you picked your one up.
My CLA 35AMG was delivered to me july 2020 & according to the vehicle specification it has been equipped with the 016 FU3 software update, so it appears that it has been available on new builds for over 1 year.
@@npoleary thats incorrect, mine came with FUP3 version 080 factory installed but apparently some are botch installations like mine, so it needs reinstalling or updating, 081 is the latest version
Hi Nick great video as always I've got the dashcam app on my cla I've had it a while now and took your advice with the sandisc usb however I've checked the auto loop function but when the stick is full it won't overwrite i need to remove the stick and wipe it on my pc. Any idea regards Colin
Hey Colin thank you! I only used it once when I produced this video and seem to recall to options when recording. There was the once option and the loop option. The loop is the one that will overwrite the oldest like any other dashcam. If that’s not working I’d suggest chatting with Mercedes and ask them to have a look. They could get one their technicians to check it out.
I think the dashcam does not auto start in all countries. I am in the US and I believe it is the same. But Mercedes should at least have a dedicated hard button or even a shortcut already on the home screen. I feel this feature was like a last minute thought to compete with BMWs. I own a 2020 Mercedes GLE 450. So, I am a Mercedes guy. But Mercedes certainly could have done better with this one.
Yes I wish it did auto start That’s why I thought it might be a good idea to mention the favourites shortcut 🤓 Hopefully it’ll change in the future! My fingers are crossed!
Dashcam just appeared for my A class following an over the air update. But without autostart its kinda pointless, especially at £200. I really don't want another bunch of buttons to press on every trip. Having to disable the lane assist "every journey" is annoying enough. On better news I've just realised I can cancel a radio traffic announcement, by pressing the volume (mute), which then switches back to radio or Spotify etc.
I have A220 premium package. Mbux, AR. Sadly, they just don't want to allow it in the USA. What is your current software and year is your car? Thanks for sharing
@Tafriqt According to the mercedes app, MBux was updated on 11th May, 8th Nov, 11th Nov, 30th Dec. So I guess it was one of the last 3 updates. Right now it says apilevel/ntg6/081. But like I say, unless they advertise that dashcam will have autostart... absolutely no point in purchasing the activation. They should offer 14 day trials on all add ons, so customers can decide themselves. I'd be interested to see the traffic add on etc. But for now sticking with Google maps for most journeys, since search and interface is much nicer BTW I'd love to see them support the wider screens for Android Auto, currently it runs in a smaller window with borders left and right. Vaguely remember Google saying they support that now. But it's up to Mercedes to integrate it.
I have this in my C200. The dealer didn't really know much about it so I found out about the lack of auto start the hard way. The most annoying thing however is that, apparently due to chip shortages, there is only one USB-C port in my car so it's either the dashcam or phone charging.
I have spoken to my local Mercedes-Benz dealership. They are saying that if a dash-cam is professionally fitted (ie Halfords) there should be no problem with the warranty.
Excited to see this and then disappointed on the Mercedes ME app said not available for my Mercedes A250e! Only got it in December and it has MBUK and Augmented Reality!! 🙁
Hey Thomas, yes I wish it had a greater resolution but it could be limited by the software and/or hardware. There isn’t a rear camera on any Mercedes that’s suitable for a dashcam. There’s a reversing camera but it’s on the outside, it’ll get dirty pretty quickly from the roads.
Thank you 🙏 Ah this one’s a little bit older about 2 years old now. Recently I made a newly visited video of that same topic with all my upgraded camera equipment. The quality should be much better! th-cam.com/video/xkXyOzoLpO0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=63tZ72xCoL3Otq7t
Hi Nick another great video, looked at my Mercedes me and only had the Urban Guard Package showing for my 21 plate GLC 300 de, surprised it would be good to have the added safety of a dash cam. 🙁
Thank you! It depends on the specification, some models have a thing called Augmented Reality which is the thing you need to be able to use this. I have a dashcam topic coming soon which I’m working on over the next month so keep your eyes peeled! 🤓
Very hit and miss. On occasions it starts, via Nicks short cut idea, but mostly informs me that the function is "unavailable" On entering Dashcam via the app it states "USB full" which is a mystery as it is set on Loop Recording. Never mind, tried contacting Mercedes Me via the vehicle to ask for a reset or the like, only to hear music and apologies for long delays. Not a great purchase.
I’ve got this app on my 22 plate W206 C220. Unfortunately, I don’t use it as, inexplicably, there is no way of getting it to start recording automatically on each journey. The quickest way of starting it is via the favourites button on the steering wheel, which is a bit of a pain as it takes around 20 seconds for the UI to initialise once the ignition button is pressed before said favourites button can be used. By which time I’m invariably driving and forget to start the recording. I would be pretty annoyed about this had I paid the activation fee for the software (around £300 I believe) but as it came pre-installed and activated from factory when I collected the car last July it’s more a wasted opportunity for Mercedes than a waste of money for me. Hopefully this is sorted with an update at some point but I doubt it.
Hey Reverse Vision, good idea! But unfortunately that wouldn’t work :( The reversing camera is on the outside so it‘ll get grubby pretty quickly! Dashcams are always located inside ideally up high
Have been enjoying all of your Mercedes tiod and tricks. I bought an EQC 6 months ago but, to my disappointment, it doesn't have the in built dashcam. Would you be able to recommend an alternative dashcam? I'd like to keep the clean aesthetic and not have wires coming from the centre console up to the windscreen. Thanks!
Hey Matthew, thank you! It’s something I’m considering reviewing in the future as quite a few have suggested it! Not something I can recommend at the moment though, the last one I bought was years ago so I’d need to do some homework again! 😅😜 It’s defo a contender for a future video!
Love that it's become live but there are major flaws with it. I've had it for over a week now. As you mentioned it doesn't start automatically and it's annoying that it can take up to 5 minutes before it can start and I've had a journey that it wouldn't even start but I was on the motorway by this point so couldn't stop to start the car again. Good in theory, poor in practice. GLA200 AMG Line Premium
I’m coming to this late, but a really helpful video. I know I have to manually start the recording each time, but what about ending the recording? Can I just turn the car off, or do I need to manually end the recording to ensure it’s properly formatted?
No it’s just the system you see in the video, and it records to a memory stick. To playback footage you’ll need to take it out and play it back on a computer 👍🏼
well well well, after commenting on Nicks video in the past and having everything on my car but it was not activated, I had to reset my mbux as i accidentally mess things up whilst cleaning the car dash area (dont ask) anyhoo as I was in my account updating stuff, the option to purchase the dashcam for $300 Cad once only was there! I already have a front and rear dashcam set up but maybe i will try this? i will check out the reviews first. Just thought i would add my comments after getting this now available for my car.
It would be nice if Mercedes Benz allowed dash cam in the us but alas another blunder !! Such a huge loss so I go outside for aftercar market to get the cameras!!
Hi Nick, love all your videos, thanks so much for helping me understand my Mercedes. Can I use Android Auto at the same time as having the Dash Cam recording? I have a 71 plate with only one front USB-C and 2 in the glove box. Thank you
Hey Jim, sadly this Dashcam feature only came out with selected MBUX models that have a camera built in. If you have any system previous to this, then the only option for a Dashcam would be a 3rd party solution with wiring into a USB port / 12V socket.
Why does Mercedes-Benz not make the dash cam and parktronic work as one alarm security system or does it? I don't have that package and it's silly because technically anything is retrofittable with proper headunit and other control modules and any cameras sensors necessary some calibration in xentry . But sales insist that retrofitting for instance augmented reality is not possible when I know for fact it is as I have seen it done properly and they pdfs in their own WIS software they use. Btw nick good stuff I would just tell ppl if they have mbux 548 low or mid then no video or full screen navigation driver side only 549 high has that. And those headunit have a significant difference in their SOC(SYSTEM ON CHIP) I FEEL SINCE cars are becoming more like computers sales should be made aware of these differences and corporate has not educated their sales on the differences etc. Thanks for your content sir
Nick, is there any way to get the looped recording to start automatically? For me the dashcam purpose would be to record any potential accidents on a used EQC that I'm buying at the moment. Thanks for the videos - they're great!
Hey Simon no sadly not, it’s due to regulations in the country it’s sold in for “on-board recording equipment”. Hopefully it’ll change in the future! I’ll cover it if I find that it changes 🤓
hooked on the videos , just ordered an amg gle 350 de premium plus, thought this option was perfect, however it seems these options have been pulled from the UK market ! as well as the augmented sat nav as of Aug 2021, or so i have been told, unable to test a gle drive hybrid as there are none around ! so was taking a gamble , will they be fixed or reinstated as option keep up the good work very informative
Hey Tony, thank you glad you like the videos! Honestly with specific specification at the moment and of course the impact the global chip shortage is having it’s best to ask your local dealership and they’ll be able to clarify.
Hi Nick, thank you for the video; I have this service, it worked well for just a few days, but now most of the time it shows that “the camera is not available “, and it's not working. Resetting the system wasn't helpful as well. Do you have any suggestions? My car is an EQC premium plus 2022. Thanks
For same money you can buy a camera 4 times the quality, and you can take it to your next car! This is max a £50 option and should 100% include reverse camera! Mercedes is behind Tesla
Hey DersimLondon, absolutely I agree, this is one of the major factors to why I made a video so people can see what it’s like. There are many dashcams out there that can record in 1080p and even higher. The fact its built in though is pretty neat and some people might quite like that. I already have one so don’t need it at the moment.
Don't forget guys, check out the description for more info ⬆
Also to enable playback on your computer, you may need to convert the file format from .mp4 to .mov.
Ah awesome!
Just the front USB ports 🤓 any of them should work in most models
Hey Nick thanks for the videos really good I spoke to merc about this before I bought it and they told me that it does record when the vehicle is parked if it notices movement or vandalism.
Also my alarm was triggered a while ago when I checked my usb it had recorded it ..
Ah interesting
I am hoping to cover this topic again soon later on the year so so watch this space! 👀 I’ll check it out!
@@npoleary that would be cool mate I look forward to it
I already optioned my AMG a45s and using it all the time, it records to usb flash, great for security reasons. But it doesnt start recording automatically, that feature needs to be added. İ sometimes forget to start recording, not something i wanted to forget...
A dash cam as standard would be better than some “ standard “ fittings. On ALL cars.
Is it the ones already fitted as standard for 360 camera acces , or is it extra cameras ?
@@naveedahmed5226 no its an extra camera. The camera for the front facing is on the front grill. The camera for the Aug navigation is in the windscreen, it's this camera that you need
What about rear view ??
Sadly no car manufacturer has fitted a rear camera to the back for recording (as far as I know). Camera would need to be on the inside so it doesn’t get dirty.
For those of us without augmented reality Mercedes does have a retrofit own brand dual channel device. Unfortunately it is insanely priced at over £800 fitted but I do understand it doesn’t invalidate warranties!
Great video thank you. Mercedes need to enable this to start with the engine though at the very least and given that my last Bmw X7 had it fitted to come on from start up makes me thinks Mercedes has missed a trick.
Excellent - I've got the augmented reality on my car so I'm definitely looking into it when my service is due next month.
Great! Add a rear view camera and automatic recording like my Blackvue and we are good to go.
720p and no sound - that takes me back. I think it was my first dashcam, back in 2009. That was only 720p too. Although it did have sound, and cost about 40 quid.
Yeah, at £200 for a software activation (ie no new kit required), it’s a bit pricey for limited functionality.
Thats what is making me also not go for the Mercedes dash cam... Can I ask you which dash cam you finally bought ?
Saying I can't get it on my 21 plate e class 😒
The dash cam is good but it fails on several things: 1) You can't use it when you first start the car. Sometimes it will take up to a minute to see the memory stick. 2) It's not automatic, you have to remember to turn it on each time. 3) The quality isn't too bad but not as good as after market ones (still good enough for the job though) 4) When playing videos back on a Mac you need to use VLC as it's not a standard .mp4 video (VLC is free)
The same problem i have but when I connect the usb to the computer, a black blank screen shown
Yes it’s just some computers can’t playback the files the multimedia system produces.
No problem Alan, glad you liked the video! 🤓
Im thinking of buying this too
Hi Alan , do you mean the onboard DCam in this video in not really worth it?
You mentioned having a MB ( MBenz ??) Fitted - was this instead of the onboard dash cam ?
Cheers
Thank you for the clear presentation Nick. But I can see 3 issues with Mercedes’ approach:
Yes, exactly it’s where people stand
If you pay for a feature then it should be available but if you hadn’t paid for a feature and were given the upgrade, then that could be okay?
It’s splits everyone 50:50! 😅
Tesla have done it for ages with their auto pilot, all cars “have it” but if you didn’t select it at factory then you can add it afterward.
Great video as always Nick.. I hate anything stuck to my windscreen with a suction cup and therefore would love something like this on my car.. 👍
Thanks
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! 🤓 I’ll keep the videos coming!
Yeah I guess the camera was designed for augmented reality but then someone thought Dashcam could work by incorporating it in. Not sure if it’s limited by software or not.
Ah okay, hopefully you won’t have to wait too long!
Your videos are extremely well done and ultra useful. Thanks for the work and time you put in (from a new CLA user who - thanks to you - is a little less bamboozled).
Awh thank you! Wish I had a team behind me to make the videos even better! But I’ll keep them coming and always open to suggestions for future videos!
Hard to tell in the comments 😅
When I last used it, it was a manual start only which I presume is still the case for the UK
@@npoleary Thanks for the reply, Nick! I'm located in Romania. The car is a week old - that is why I mentioned the year and model, because there might be a possibility that this feature appeared in the latest software update. Cheers!
That option does not exist in the UK, unfortunately.
Ah so this camera was never designed to be dashcam in the first place. It’s main purpose is Augmented Reality for the Sat Nav, Dashcam was added years later when regulations in countries allow it.
I’m hoping that newer models might have an improved Dashcam functionality, I’ll try again soon! 🤓
@@npoleary Cheers. Best wishes for your continuing success.
Shame about the reflection from the bulkhead dash......they didn't think that one through!
"Speak with your local Mercedes" I actually knew more about it after watching this video than they did.
I have the necessary features... I hope it's available in the states! 🙏
Just picked up my EQS, came straight here hoping for a DashCam video, I wasn’t disappointed. 😀
Oh awesome!
Ah this video’s a little bit older
I made a new one a few weeks ago: th-cam.com/video/xkXyOzoLpO0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=dqUi2ide9MB_zGsk
I got all excited, Until I saw your video Nick. I'll wait for higher res, mph and auto record. Meantime Nextbase Front & Rear are still streets ahead unfortunately :(
Hey Richard, aha one of the reasons why I produced a video to let everyone know how it works and what it’s like 🤓
Sadly in built systems are heavily restricted by localised laws on privacy etc. Some countries don’t even allow this, even the UK was in this position last year but had recently changed.
By hey, it’s a step in the right direction , who knows the next one might have loads of features! 🤓
Thanks for sharing, my dealer did not even mention this when I purchased my car last week.
No worries Erin! Although not sadly not on every car!
You can check on the Mercedes me store (long as your car is linked to your Mercedes me account) 🤓
This is an amazing addition! Thank you for this update, Nick. 👌
No problem! Thanks Lightning Farron! 🤓
@@npoleary what is your opinion about this? They couldn't solve it in turkey for 5 months th-cam.com/video/TnFJkd_M0H4/w-d-xo.html
Gonna get this on my new E-Class coupe when its delivered! Thanks for the video!
Thanks for sharing!
Yes this video was for NTG 6, I produced one recently for NTG 7 🤓
Hi Nick, thanks for the MB link. All up and running now!👍🍺
Ah no problem! 😇
Hi Guys, glad you all love the video! I’ve had a huge amount of requests to help with locating it on the Mercedes me store.
UK USERS ONLY: bit.ly/MercedesmeUKDashcam
Really sorry I won’t be able to assist with exact specifics as to why you might not have it yet but I have heard you need to check:
REQUIREMENTS FOR DASHCAM:
MBUX Multimedia System (Generation 1 or Generation 2)
MBUX Augmented Reality for Navigation (Code U19)
Purchased Mercedes me Dashcam Service
FU3 Update (completed at a Mercedes-Benz Workshop)
USB Memory Stick
If you can't see it, it can be for a number of reasons such as the equipment in your Mercedes, it may not have had a software update yet or it genuinely may not be available where you live.
This would be amazing on my E-Classes cabriolet. Sadly says it not available. Sad. 🥺

You can play back in car in media player
I wish the camera has auto start, higher resolution and cloud storage. Also would be nice if you can open your phone and see the camera in real time. Missing so many things to be a good dashcam.Tesla is 10 years ahead any other car seriously 😕
A nice idea, but I don't regret fitting my front & rear Next bases. And the audio recording allows the wife & I to play "burp of the week".
Aha interesting! Yes I know it does vary quiet a lot round the world!
Wow congrats bud, I have 2021 amg gle53 and I live in texas as well, do you think my model will work?
@@jaredhuynh Yes. One caution: it won't start until the engine has been running for about a minute
@@skytexas26 i called my local dealer and they said to activate I must purchase the 21U flash drive for $133.
@@jaredhuynh Well, I tried several different flash drives, and they all worked.
Great video Nick. I purchased it within the first hour of it then released. It’s not the greatest dash cam in the world but it meets my needs
Kevin?
Awesome! Wow you must have been speedy!
Seems to need MBUX 080 update or newer to purchase
Yeah sorry guys, I wouldn’t know exact specifics on why you might not have it. Best thing to do is speak with the Mercedes me team and they may be able to point you in the right direction.
Tap on the top left of the app, then press help and they’ll be able to advise.
@@npoleary Yep, my wife has mailed via the Merc Me app to ask if it'll be available. Not expecting you to know all the permutations :)
Thank you 👍🏻
Ah amazing Alan! That’s good 🙏
Hi Alan, glad all is going well with the dashcam. Can you tell if you can still use the satnav and dashcam at the same time.
@@johncameron6853 Yes John, no problem
9:36 apologies if anybody else has said this (no time to read every comment) - if you use VLC Media Player on your PC, Mac or even iPad, the videos will play natively, ie no need to convert 👍
VLC’s good! That worked for me too!
Thanks for the video, but 720p and no auto start, expensive and pointless!
Excellent video Nick.
I ordered mine already from the configuration of the car at the dealer!
Thank you! Glad you liked the video!
Hi Nick. Thanks for the video. Does the dash cam feature impact on the camera being used for augmented reality on the sat nav ie can it do both at the same time or does the dash cam feature override the sat nav feature if its activated?
It has no impact
Yup it’ll work fine with both of them running together 🤓
@@npoleary thankyou 🙂
@@iZian Thankyou 🙂
Hey Peter, yes you’re absolutely right, there are dashcams out there that record in 1080 60FPS or even 4k
The built in option is amazing but yes I wish it was a higher resolution too, I’d imagine it’s a software or hardware limitation.
Thanks David! 🤓
Hi David, do you know if you can still play music through another usb port from another usb device while the dash cam is recording .
@@alantaylor2 Yes Alan you can with no issues
@@budice8677 thanks David
Hi Dave, no I haven’t
The only experience I’ve had with it is literally in the video and a few mins before.
I bought it the day before and had to wait a little while for it to activate.
I know specs to vary from car to car so it might not be the same for everyone as there can be different versions etc
@@npoleary Turns out I was just a little impatient, as I was able to add it to favourites fine today.
Excellent video, Nick. Here in Germany, the dashcam can still not be activated. However, only 720p at only 30 fps is not enough either. - Thanks for working on the topic including the footage.
Hey Sven, thank you yes I know it does vary round the world. Hopefully privacy laws and regulations catch up and allow it in the future!
@@npoleary That's how long I use my additionally installed DashCam. - BTW, BMW activated the dashcam function in Germany months ago. 🤷🏻♂️
Oh cool! Mercedes might do it soon then! Fingers crossed! 🤞🏼

Can the dealer change this ? I live in Belgium.

I have MBUX and AR but not appearing on my Me store yet.
Did it appear for you yet? I have A200 with MBUX and AR but no option to buy this in the store
@@MethuCysgu nothing yet.
Hey Captain Scarlett,
This could be, I know it’s a bit tricky at the moment with these couple of options and of course the choice is yours.
You can get of course get a dashcam hardwired but as the “internals”
of the car will have been tampered with, it could invalidate the warranty. In new cars I would suggest carefully putting wires round the outside of the top of the windscreen all the way round and eventually to a USB port or 12V socket. This means your warranty is still intact.
This was exactly the information I was looking for. Thank you!
720p is ancient
Good video Nick. I've moved loop recording as a favourite but it won'tx retain its position - goes back to far right. Got NTG7
Hmmm, I would have thought they should retain their position but sadly not managed to use dashcam on NTG 7. Hopefully soon as my car has it so I’ll be covering it in the future!
@@npoleary many thanks
My new Mercedes A-class didn't come with the augmented reality chip installed yet due to the European chip shortage. Will I need this chip installed to get the dash cam feature?
Yes.
Though, not sure if you can change the MBUX head unit.
Probably don’t have the camera module? Or they fitted 548 MBUX. Either means no dice
Not sure why I would have to change the mbux head unit? Mercedes told me that they will simply install the chip once available. Just wondering if the dashcam will work without the augmented reality chip currently or if I need to wait til it gets installed.
Does you a class have the AR sat nav?
Great video Nick, easy to follow step-by-step as always.👍
Thank you Trevor! 🤓
There’s after market FITCAMX which install to replace the original rain sensor cover like OEM and ON as soon as you turn on your MBZ !
Another great video Nick. Thank you for the insight and knowledge!!
No problem! 🤓
Some countries (eg Austria, I think) actually BAN dash-cams: and it's illegal to even carry them, even if they are off and unplugged.... Again, may change, but a worry if it becomes a requirement for your insurance!
So true Mr T, it varies massively round the world when it comes to dashcams. Fingers crossed it changes in the future!

MB UK are saying if you cannot see the option to buy dashcam when you should do, go to dealership and ask for a freshup 3, FUP3 update, which apparently is the fix.
Hey Asif, yes I have heard this too and subsequently have added that to the list of requirements for the dashcam 🤓
FU3 only came out very recently so probably didn’t exist when you picked your one up.

@@npoleary ok great thanks Nick
I think the dashcam does not auto start in all countries. I am in the US and I believe it is the same. But Mercedes should at least have a dedicated hard button or even a shortcut already on the home screen. I feel this feature was like a last minute thought to compete with BMWs. I own a 2020 Mercedes GLE 450. So, I am a Mercedes guy. But Mercedes certainly could have done better with this one.
Yes I wish it did auto start
That’s why I thought it might be a good idea to mention the favourites shortcut 🤓
Hopefully it’ll change in the future!
But for now sticking with Google maps for most journeys, since search and interface is much nicer
BTW I'd love to see them support the wider screens for Android Auto, currently it runs in a smaller window with borders left and right.
join the club it's infuriating isn't it
Another great video mate 😀 Thanks very much
Thanks Darryl! 🤓
Only 720p? No rear camera? Today we are talking 4k i. e. BlackVue. Surprised Mercedes are launching yesterday's technology. Hope for improvement. :-)
Thanks for the video, one observation from the demo is the camera seems a little high and doesn’t capture everything you may need it too.
Thank you 🙏
Ah this one’s a little bit older about 2 years old now.
Recently I made a newly visited video of that same topic with all my upgraded camera equipment. The quality should be much better!

Cheers Nick, great info 👍
Thanks Craig!
Hi Nick
I also have the collision alert system on my 2021 A35 Premium.
What is the collision alert system?
I love my GLC AMG. In terms of cameras feature, my GLC cannot beat my Tesla S plaid.
Another neat addition to this would be allowing the rear parking camera to record simultaneously as the dash one for improved security footage angles.
Hey Reverse Vision, good idea! But unfortunately that wouldn’t work :(
The reversing camera is on the outside so it‘ll get grubby pretty quickly! Dashcams are always located inside ideally up high
@@npoleary in that case hopefully mercedes adds an additional rear dash cam in their future car models.
Yeah fingers crossed!
It’s defo a contender for a future video!

I’m coming to this late, but a really helpful video. I know I have to manually start the recording each time, but what about ending the recording? Can I just turn the car off, or do I need to manually end the recording to ensure it’s properly formatted?
That’s alright! 🤓
No you’re good to turn the car off without ending. The multimedia system finishes the clip and saves it.
@ that’s great to understand - thanks!
thanks Nick great video ....can you watch your dash cam as your driving (like on a traditional dash cam ) ??
No sadly not, it’s records straight onto the memory stick (glad you enjoyed the video!)
@@npoleary Thanks Nick....do you need any specific software to interrogate
In the U.S., there’s a $200 activation fee. Not worth it for something you have to remember to turn on.
Thank you

Any suggestion for models without the MBUX system?

Hey Sam, no really sorry I wouldn’t know on that one. Have you spoken with your local Mercedes? They may be able to help and find out what’s going on.
