I've heard that the "pirate" accent was from the original Treasure Island movie. It was simply the way Robert Newton(Long John Silver) decided to talk for the character. Partly due to his natural accent, but with some possible embellishment. After that everyone just decided that's how pirates talked.

Lord of the Rings connection. This came out before Jackson had finished The Return of The King. So he specifically tried to differentiate the Army of the Dead from LOTR and these pirates.
Fun story… I actually know the guy who made all the swords for this movie. I was in high school at the time, and the father of a friend of mine landed the contract to make all the swords. Every sword you see, made by hand, by a highly skilled sword master. When we all graduated, instead of getting grad rings, he made us swords. Very cool! We were warned by the principal of my school to NOT bring our “grad rings” to our grad ceremony 😂

This first movie is an absolute classic. Johnny Depp is iconic. The later movies aren’t awful just can’t compete with this one. How Jack plays everyone the whole movie but in the end is a good guy. The later movies play too much with the double crossing and drama.

A little bit of historical context. Port Royal on Jamaica was the home base of the English pirates. The island of Tortuga north of Haiti was the home base of the French pirates.
Great first reaction of the movie that started a saga that would eventually became Disney's favorite one among the audience. I remember seen the first Pirates of the Caribbean when I was like 3 or 4 years old. Remember I had the movie on DVD by that time and also I remember when they passed it through Disney's Channel on the old days of the early 2000s.
What I loved about this is that Johhn was silly in this, but he was also very competent. He didn't succeed by luck or plot contrivances, he succeeded because- despite his silliness - he's a damn good pirate. Later movies he often succeeds by pure luck and not his talent.
While I have come to like movies 2 & 3 (except for the other 2), the first movie still holds up far better than any of them to this very day. Hard to imagine that this movie is turning 21 years old (as of 2024). I remember when this movie first came out. Ah, such simpler times. Also, Keira Knightley was probably my first crush.
Back in the 70s - 80s we went to Florida to visit family quite often during the summers. While there we would always go to Disney World, and Pirates of the Caribbean was my favorite ride. I would ride it at least three or four times every time we went. That and Space Mountain, because it was the only rollercoaster that did not make me sick. :D
Fun fact about corsets- they were not patriarchal torture devices designed to oppress women. They were basically bras with front and back support. You could not wear one of those 18th century fashionable gowns without a corset. Also, when this movie takes place, it was impossible to lace the corset tight enough to make you pass out. Metal eyelets hadn’t been invented yet, so if they tried to tight lace, they would just rip the corset. By the time tightlacing became a thing, only upper class women did it, because only they could afford to lose mobility. Today’s corsets are also technically more dangerous than corsets back then, because corsets back then were customized to a specific woman’s torso, while today, they’re mass produced in a single shape.
I agree with your use of "Caribbean." English is soo funny.... I almost always say "Appalachia" instead of "Appalachia"... but oddly, I tend to say "either" instead of "either."
They were lightening the ship to try and lose the Black Pearl in the Shoals.......the Shoals is an area of water around an island or rocky crags where it's very shallow and a ship can get stuck or heavily damaged on the bottom if it tries to traverse these zones. By lightening the load on their ship they make their draft (area of the ship that is under water) less and thus could potentially glide over the Shoals while the bigger heavier ship like the Black Pearl would get stuck
It seems like the two of you think the apple was unripe because it was green. Of course, it was Granny Smith, which is green when it is ripe. They are tart but are also one of the most popular apples around.
Commodore, I believe is just shy of an admiral. There would be a little bit of a fancy party for it, especially in the colonies because it'd be so rare. It was extremely rare for admirals to be commissioned in the new world as well (because admirals tend to be more politicians than sailors so they'd always be close to the throne unless specifically ordered to sail by the king). Lord Admiral Nelson was a little bit of an exception to this. He was very much a sailor, but his loyalty and fervor to the crown impressed the king and his subordinates alike.
Yep, it's the rank above a captain and below a rear admiral. Although historically it was a job description rather than a rank, for a captain who was in command of a squadron of ships rather than just his own.
You are right about that! I have some cousins who are all musicians in their family, the father, the mother and the daughter but not the son! He is the only one in that family who doesn't understand squat about music!

Wow what a great idea for reactions! Never even thought of them for you guys. I loved these movies , the humor is just my cuppa tea!
It’s interesting to note the diff between “creepy” and “atmospheric”! I find this movie and the entire franchise full of atmosphere and only occasional bits of creepiness.
Yeah, great franchise. Can't believe the Mrs. hasn't seen it yet. But her reactions look real, like always.
“I don’t like the water.” I think Mrs Movies and John Silver of Starz’ Black Sails have a lot in common here.
Man I've missed you guys, not that you've gone anywhere, I've just not seen much of your content recently. The PotC films are a great watch so I'm looking forward to these reactions!
I love this movie. The score is excellent, Johnny Depp is incredible and it's real fun to watch y'all watch it 😂
Hans Zimmer is a genius. He and Howard Shore (Lord of the Rings) are two of the greatest cinematic composers, ever!
You should check out Hans’ concert in Prague! It’s on TH-cam!
I’m so glad you guys are watching these films, they’re soooo good
i imagine the apple is a golden delicious they are very sweet and have a green skin that goes yellow the sweeter it gets ,try one they are great
I think it's a Granny Smith apple 🍏
What's a pirate's favorite letter? Most people would think "R", but tis truly the C they love.
He had a bit of luck in this one.
31:19 He was looking at the storm coming in.
You are the only person so far mentioned the air pocket 👍👍👍👏great call
My favorite pronunciation of Caribbean is the way Billy Ocean sings it in Caribbean Queen
11:31 And here, we have a key trait about this franchise. It's not a _POTC_ movie if there isn't at least _one_ highly improbably fight sequence.
30:43 This is _another_ common trope in this franchise; a woman who's bitter toward Jack.
Mrs Movies is a ⭐️ and I love it when she corrects Mr Movies vocabulary and every time he replies “that’s what I said” 😂
her hair looks nice. the mrs is so pretty
33:38 This interaction takes on a different light in view of the fact that Pintel (the long-haired guy) is Ragetti's uncle 😆
Hope you two are having an great and awesome day ❤
Back in the 70s - 80s we went to Florida to visit family quite often during the summers. While there we would always go to Disney World, and Pirates of the Caribbean was my favorite ride. I would ride it at least three or four times every time we went. That and Space Mountain, because it was the only rollercoaster that did not make me sick. :D
4:46 nice tasteful nod in agreement. Well played.
One of my favorite movie franchises growing up
kiera could have easy jumped off de pearl in the beginning and swim back to the port.
I agree with your use of "Caribbean."
English is soo funny.... I almost always say "Appalachia" instead of "Appalachia"... but oddly, I tend to say "either" instead of "either."
6:45 Hey, Mrs Movies! It’s not the size of the boat, it’s the motion of the ocean! 🧜🧐
7:07 That's the reaction i like from that scene. I wonder why so few reactors have barely noticed the ship sinking.
They actually made a ride based on the actual Potc movies on Shanghai Disney! It's super cool and has a backwards drop!
I so enjoy watching you two!
They're more undead than dead, I think. Slight difference
4:17 honestly my dude, I had to laugh at this ya can't argue with that rationale from the missus!
40:51 ..."That was lucky"... He couldn't af-fork to lose another eye...
(I should be in prison for this kind of jokes😓)
I'm not obsessed with treasure, Treasure is obsessed with me 😂
“It’s only gambling if you lose! Otherwise it’s called, ‘wining’!”
Another good quote, sir!
30:01 To demonstrate how the curse worked.
So excited to see you watching this franchise. You both are the most adorable couple I have the pleasure of watching, relationship goals or what
I remember when I was like 7 I had an argument with a clown over the pronunciation of Caribbean. He just wanted to make me a pirate sword.
You are right about that! I have some cousins who are all musicians in their family, the father, the mother and the daughter but not the son! He is the only one in that family who doesn't understand squat about music!
