First video of Melanie’s I watched to make a baby blanket for my daughter. Then I watched Melanie quilt and tried it myself. I’ve now made dozens of quilts for my friend and family to enjoy. Wouldn’t have happened without Melanie. Her legacy is seriously everywhere! You are so missed Melanie!
I was scrolling through TH-cam and I happen to see this tutorial. I rewatched it again just to get my Melanie fix. She was such an inspiration both as a woman and as a teacher for her sewing and crafting skills.
Same here. I am going to sew my grandson a blanket and I knew to come check our Melanie's TH-cam to get the best DIY vlog! I miss her videos so much. She was so good at explaining things. She is greatly missed.
Oh goodness....Melanie. I miss you. Thankyou for your legacy of teaching and sweetness. You were a pioneer for me it my quest to learn how to sew and I will forever be grateful. 😇
I have been making this type of blanket for years only I use cotton fabric on one side and baby flannel on the other. Since I make so many I made a test wash of both fabric with there being a cotton blend and there was no shrinkage with JoAnn Brand baby fabric. If you are making for a gift you can sew lace around the edges before you sew the two fabrics together, or sew rickrack or other trim around a boys blanket. Back in the 70's we called these summer quilts since they are light weight. Put the the flannel next to baby on cool evenings and cotton on warm days. This was before the minky fabric came out, minky was a remake of chenille fabric. Your blankets are cute as can be and I am glad to see the younger moms learning to sew. Thanks for sharing, going to share with my grand daughter she is learning to sew and make quilts.
I buy the width of the fabric, so if it is 42 inches wide, I buy 42 inches so it will be squared. I put lace around the edges rather than binding unless it is for a little boy, still just sew edge to edge and put rick/rack or make a binding from some cut fabric bias. but not binding, just a strip to add originality. We called them summer blankets 50 years ago. I do the same thing with little quilts, no batting, just solid backing to quilted top. They can be used for babies or lap blankets for the elderly. My special orders start at $25., but I do sell some for $15 if made from scraps/left over fabrics. If I put monogram on them it is extra.
I was answering Jordan Bakers post about the fabric, how much it costs, etc. She asked me the question. Read the post. I do not sell on the internet...If I do a special blanket it is for craft shows. Shame on you.
Maybe you should learn to read before you put your foot in your mouth. G.H never mentioned a thing about selling anything. Grow up little girl and let the big girls play.
I’m about to make a baby blanket gift and this popped up in my suggested videos. It’s one of the first videos of yours I saw. I hope you’re at peace resting in heaven Melanie. ❤️
I come across Melanie's videos so often when looking up projects and I have made several of her projects. She did so much good in this world and continues to do so. Bless the Ham family. 💞
I just completed a custom baby blanket for a friend's baby using this video. The instructions were clear and simple to follow and the blanket is beautiful! Thank you, Melanie. Love lives on.
I have been sewing for 5 years now. Learning from videos like this one. Thank you for loading and sharing this with all of us. I will post when I am done. Super excited to show you all.
Fantastic, Thank you. Grandbaby is due the end of January and I'm starting my sewing now that Christmas is over. I will be using this tutorial for her baby blankets!!! Lovely and simple
Melanie, your instructions and descriptions are so easy to follow. I learnt to crochet following your instructions and made a simple baby blanket, first time ever. Thank you!!
love your videos! I’ve watched them so much over the years and miss you so much! I know your an angel up there making great things and teaching everyone ❤
Made two of these the other day for my twins on the way, while my two year old was sleeping ... It was really easy I was surprised I'm not a very good sewer at all but they don't look half bad :-) I'm so excited for them them to arrive and use them :-)
I have made 2 now and they have both turned out great!!! Super easy project and if you make little mistakes you can't tell!!!! I will definitely be making more in the future. Keep the great and easy sewing tutorials coming.
Timeless as Melanie, her videos always bring joy and great ideas. Wonder what she is creating with her Creator in heaven? ✨Prayers continue for her husband, son, daughter and extended family.
Hi Melany, congrats to over 300,000 TH-cam audience. I'm one of them ever since Jan. 16 when I learned my son & wife are expecting boy & girl twins on June. I saw this tutorial and decided to challenge and now, I'm hooked. Thank you. Keep up your good work with your smile.
Melanie, Thank you for making these videos for us beginners. I have watched this video countless times and last night I tried it. it may have taken me 4 hours but I made it and it actually looks like a baby blanket! Thank you again for inspiring me to learn to sew! :)
I have not sewn for a year and wanted to start again by sewing baby blankets as gifts for Mom's to be. Your video was easy to follow and gave me the confidence to sew again. Thank you.
I made these blankeys for my cousins babies and made sure to include care instructions for the minky. I had a friend learn the hard way what happens when you iron minky...no more dots. :/ I also bought enough to make myself a blanket like this...but, as usual...ive yet to make it. LOL I seem to come last. HA!! It is super easy and makes a super nice blanket for babies.
Melanie will always be immortalised at this perfect age. She was obviously a beautiful woman inside and out. I often wonder how her husband and young kids are going without her. She’s always my go to for sewing lessons. I look forward to meeting her in Heaven one day, but it saddens me the devil stole such a beautiful daughter, sister, wife and mother. Blessings from Australia 🇦🇺
I do this with 2 pieces of flannel. Two prints that go together or a print and a solid. Same procedure to sew them together . Turn right side out and top stitch around and close up the opening used for turning.
Will definitely hand sew this! I don't have a sewing machine and I honestly have no idea how they even work. Lol. My Mom use to make us clothes and stuff all the time. She knows how to use the sewing machine. I never asked her to teach me. I have always done it by hand. I love it but to wish to learn one day so I can actually make clothes and stuff. Thank youuuu!
Thank you sooo much for the vid! When you don’t know how to so, I couldn’t understand how this would work after turning right side out. So obvious. Great vid
Thank you for your tutorial. Thanks to you, I made my one and only baby niece a receiving blanket today!! I've never sewn before this video. It turned out great! 😊
What a fun project! I'm a beginner and made this for my sister in law who is having a baby soon. I realized that I need some practice on sewing straight lines but other than that I think I did well for my first time! Thanks so much for posting this video, I'm looking forward to doing more of your projects.
I just wanted to say that I've been watching your videos and I find them extremely easy to follow and you are very thorough so I'm really enjoying them and I really appreciate you making them for us watch. I crochet a lot (still learning) and with some of the projects I do I sew in a lining. I really want to ask my hubby for a sewing machine next :)
I am making my little girls (18m, 4y, 5y, 6y) fleece blankets for Christmas, but I couldn't remember how to trim the corners before turning right-side-out. Thanks for this tutorial! Helped my end product be more awesome than it would have been!
Love the tutorial but what keeps the back and front from separating? I’m a quilter so I’m so used to quilting the layers together. Does this not separate? Thank you
I just made this and it turned out great! THANK YOU for helping me gain confidence with my sewing skills. Your videos are THE best, and I look forward to making more things with your help. I even shared this link with my FB sewing group along with a photo of my finished baby blanket. Thanks so much!
I made this blanket today, I used fleece and cotton fabric in a Mickey Mouse theme using your instructions and I think it came out great. Thank you Melanie :)
Minky is synthetic material so doesn't need to be washed for shrinkage but can always wash anyway to get rid of handling residues from the warehouse and production at least.

It's nice to see Melanie Ham sharing her knowledge for FREE. It's not nice to use Melanie' space here to sell your stuff. Thumbs down for you Grandma!

Flannel and polar fleece. One for a baby and one for my queen size bed. Channel quilted every 4 inches or so. Nice and warm
I do this with 2 pieces of flannel. Two prints that go together or a print and a solid. Same procedure to sew them together . Turn right side out and top stitch around and close up the opening used for turning.

Hi Melanie - love your tutorials! Why sew 5/8" but then trim afterwards? Thanks!
Help! I'm confused on the measurements. If you have 1&1/2 yd cotton and 1&1/4 yd minky, how is the minky larger?
Jill Fountain this was my question too
Love this blanket. Great instructions. Easy to follow.
WoW! Thanks for sharing! Just got a new baby cousin recently! can't wait to try this out on my sewing machine for her!!!
Thanks to you, I just sewed my first baby's blanket, for my baby I am expecting in March :)
I love to make easy baby blankets like this. When I have time I iron the opening after pinning to make it sew close easier.
Love the tutorial but what keeps the back and front from separating? I’m a quilter so I’m so used to quilting the layers together. Does this not separate? Thank you
I have been looking for this type of tutorial ... thanks so much it was excellent.
Hi love your tutorials, this is maybe a stupid question but why aren’t the two pieces of fabric just the same size to begin with?
Really cute and simple. Love it. Thanks for sharing.
