I want to thank you for this video you made,,, You helped me solve a problem, as an inexperienced quilt sewer,,, I have made lots of potholders, but never a quilt, my first baby quilt that had appliqués of a tree, per my daughter request, and I needed to add batting. Thank you 100x.
Thank you for such a detailed video. I just started trying to make small blankets and this binding method is lovely. My first project was a wee pad for my guinea pig. Printed fleece center with a coordinating floral border and an old kitchen towel inside for absorption. It turned out nice and looks so fancy!!
Great video! I am so happy to see a self binding blanket with batting!!!! Easy to follow! Glad I Googled this instead of settling for a blanket without batting for a December baby!
@@JanHowell Hi Jan! Not sure if this is okay? I ended up making the top piece 33" square and the backing 41" square.... 8" difference. How big should my batting be on the back? Is it always 5" smaller than the backing piece, in other words, should the batting be cut at 36" square? Thanks! I'm so excited to get started! Will those measurements work?
Thank you for your videos. So many others talk too fast for me plus their hands always seem to be in the way. Your videos are so easy to understand/follow.I have sewn so many baby quilts as they are great shower gifts. i really like the mitered corners. I am almost 90 years of age (not old ya know). Thank you jan. I have a friend that wanted a blanket made from cotton fabric. I have only done the blankets using flannel or a fleece which always turns out to be very nice. I will try the batting. I was planning on doing that but couldn't come up with which piece would have the batting. This makes total sense, just couldn't come up with it on my own...very appreciative that you did this video. Blessings
you can di this same thing without having to -5" from your quilt. just make sure that your batting is +5" and you backing is +10" of whatever your quilt size is. this way you can make your quilt size a little larger if you need to. Also keep in mind the binding is going to be 1/2 of however much extra you put. for example this was 10" so the binding was 5". So if i made the binding 8" i would want my batting to be 4" because that is what width of my binding total will be. i like this method of self binding when i need the extra width, and the roll over method when i want a thin binding.
Love your video! Made my first mitered corner baby blankets with batting for my granddaughter and for a friends baby. Thank you! Love your teaching style.
I so appreciate your clear and easy to follow tutorials, Jan. I've made 4 of the orginal self-binding blankets and wanted to make one with batting. This tutorial is just what I wanted and needed. Thank you, thank you!
This is my next project - this week or next. Wanted a self binding (never done) blanket with batting for my granddaughter!! Can’t wait!! I live FT in an RV so space for sewing is tricky!

Very nice instructions, I actually just pinned the batting on the underside (right side) of the fabric so I could remove the pins after it was reversed! It worked perfect.
Thanks for showing this. I thought there should be a way to add batting to these cute baby blankets and now I know how to do it. New grandbaby coming in January will have his/hers with batting.

Hi Jan, thank you for all your tutorials, they are really helpful and I learned alot from you. I love making the receiving blankets for babies but I am still struggling with measurements. At the moment I am using 30 X 40 inches only. My question is can I use 30 X 50 inches for backing cos I like more around the blanket. And vice versa with any sizes. Sorry for the confusion. Or it has to be even number just 10 inches more. Basically I cannot figured out how the measurements work hhhhh. Thanks for your response I really appreciate that.🤍
Super new to all of this, but I’m making a “t-shirt” quilt (in quotations because there are shirts of varying weights, sweatshirts, and even a block made from a pair of jean shorts) and want to add batting with the self-binding method you describe here. It’s going to be a rather large blanket, and you said at the end that there should be more quilting if it’s larger. How would I do that with a t-shirt quilt? Thanks so much for the video and the help!
Sounds like a fun quilt. I would apply the backing to the measurement formula in the video, but don't finish the edges yes. Quilt it as you would a normal quilt and then finish with the binding following the instructions. I hope that is helpful . Let me know how it goes.
I wanted to do my full size quilt this way, but do you think it can be "long arm" quilted or do I just leave the ends un-sewn, have the long arm quilter do that then come back & bring the back around. It's difficult for me to envision it. I definitely want about 3" from the backing fabric to show on front. This is my 1st quilt. I put a narrow border with mitered corners, but want it to look like a picture frame with matting. Thanks for any tips...You did a great demo. Thanks!
Thanks so much for this tutorial! Question I already have a 30” square “front” piece and a 40” square back piece cut out… what dimensions should I cut out of the batting material?
Hi. I'm having great difficulty with cotton front and back with insul- batting, 24x 20. When I sew the lines diagonally, it's fine, but when I sew the horizontal where it meets, I get bulk and rippling. I dont have a walking foot. Can I do this free motion? I dont want to seam RIP it AGAIN. lol.
Not that I'm aware of. You could sew around the batting and backing fabric before doing the mitered corners, then you would only see the stitching on the back side if you are concerned.
I looked for the link you mentioned regarding cutting directions but can find it. I have a rectangle size frog panel that I am making a quilt from a wasn’t sure exactly what my back should be . My topper is 32. Then I added 2-1/2 on all four sides for the batting For some reason I can’t figure out how many inches I need for the extra backing to wrap around for the binding. Is it 5” on all four sides?
Yes, use the same measurement, no matter what it is, on all four side. This video goes over some more details on cutting the fabric. th-cam.com/video/4d6QnCMErMU/w-d-xo.html
Great tutorial. I have wanted to put batting in for a long time but I wasn't quite sure how to do it. Because I really want to make some with a nice quality quilting cotton and that's just not heavy enough with just the two layers. The flannel just isn't always as Nice of quality as I want for baby gift even though it's soft. I like the tip about tying and I think that would be so cute. Again thank you for doing this tutorial.
I need one of those sizes for my granddaughters "babies" aka animals. Her stuffies are her dolls, not baby dolls. Though she has dolls, she has way more stuffies and those are her babies! I need LOTS of them!
I used flannel fabric. You can get the post and video for making your own labels here: youmakeitsimple.com/2020/08/01/diy-printable-fabric-labels-easy-iron-on-method/
Hello Jan, help me with the math. Are my calculations correct? Center fabric = 30 inches, Outer fabric = 40 inches, then the Batting = 35 inches? Also, should I prewash the batting? Thank you.
Hi Jan, I hope you are well and in good spirits. Well, I completed my first blanket. The center is 30", while the back is 40". The inseam is 3/8". I was proud of myself until I noticed the border widths are uneven. Two sides of the blanket are 2" wide, while two sides are 2 1/2" wide. I can't figure out what I did incorrectly. I expected the borders to be smaller because I used a 3/8" inseam. But this problem???? Please, please advise. Thank you.
Sounds like you pieces were not square. They don't have to be, but if you cut the length at 30 inches but the width wss different it will make difference. Say you have a center that measures 30 x 35, the back piece needs to be 40 x 45. Then you need to make sure that when you sew it together you line up the 30 and 40 edges and the 35 and 45 edges. I hope that makes sense. Let me know if you have further questions.
Hi Jan,Made a couple of the flannel baby blankets,I tried adding the batting but t don't think I cut it right. So if I'm making it 40 for the back and 30 for the front what size do I cut the batting?Help I ruined a enough batting I quess I'll be making pot holders.
Hi Maria, I'm sorry to hear that this has been confusing for you. Let's see if I can clear things up for you. Fabric and Batting Measurements: It's always the same formula for any size. So if you wanted a finished blanket that measures 35 x 40, the back piece would measure 40 x 45. The batting is 5 inches smaller than the back piece (35 x 40), the same measurement as the finished blanket. The front piece would measure 30 x 35 inches. So in your case. Your back piece measures 40 inches square. The BATTING SHOULD BE CUT TO MEASURE 35 INCHES. The front piece will measure 30 inches square. If you still need further assistance, email me fibersandtwigs@gmail.com.
It is a little intimidating. I have to make sure I am paying attention for sure. After sewing the first dog ear, don't cut and turn it right side out to make sure it's right, then cut. That way you can unpick, but you can't uncut :)
I felt the same!!🤣🤣I had to use a seam ripper three times. At the end it came out really good. That little square 1/4” box we had to mark, now I know why you have to stop at 1/4”.
I just made my first baby blanket using this tutorial and it turned out perfectly! Thank you!!

Great job and you are correct about the stitching.
Your videos are so easy to follow, where do you buy your beautiful flannel fabrics from?
Most of them are from Joanne
Love these! For larger blankets should I topstitch first or do the quilting first? Great tutorials!
I would do your quilting first, but make sure the fabric is pulled out tight and safety pinned real well, especially the binding.

If you’re using cotton batting don’t pre wash your fabric. Then they’ll both shrink a bit together.

@JanHowell thank you very much for the link. I'll go in You Tube in a little bit. Elizabeth
Therefore, there’s no batting in the borders, right.? Have you tried making the batting larger.?
Yes. The batting extends into the boarders
Hello Jan, help me with the math. Are my calculations correct? Center fabric = 30 inches, Outer fabric = 40 inches, then the Batting = 35 inches? Also, should I prewash the batting? Thank you.
Yes, that is correct. Do not prewash the batting, it will fall apart.
@@JanHowell Will the batting come apart while inside the blanket?
@@biomedlib at the end of the video I give you some suggestions on how to keep the batting in place. timestamp 14:54 No, it won't fall apart.
@@JanHowell Thank you....
Well done
Thank you
Love it 😊
Yay! Thank you!
@@JanHowell As always Jan, thank you for your input. I appreciate you. 🤗 Best, Cheryl
Can you show me how to add ties to the blanket?
Here is a link for that video.

What kind of sewing machine is that? Why does mine sound so different?
This machine is a babylock verve. All machines will sound different.
Fabric and Batting Measurements:
It's always the same formula for any size.

@@JanHowell Hi Jan,I'm going to try it ,I'm wanting for them to turn out the same as the flannel ones. Thank you so very much for your help.
thank you
You are so welcome
Cute
Thank you!
If it is long enough, cut off the metal.
I don't know why I allow the "dog ears" get to me, but I messed up my first blanket for my granddaughter and now I am always afraid I do it wrong!
WOW excellent video easy to follow instructions!! 🧵🥰🐞🤗🧵
You're so welcome Lala!
