  • Producer/Writer/Director Holt Hamilton takes you "Behind the Scenes" of the making of a Native heartwarming story of a girl's reignited love for her Native heritage, "Turquoise Rose."
    Turquoise Rose was filmed on the Navajo Nation, in Gallup, New Mexico and Mesa, Arizona in 2006. It features a number of Navajo people, most without professional acting experience, in the lead parts. The title role is played by Natasha Kaye Johnson of Twin Lakes. Johnson, who has done some part-time modeling, worked as a reporter for The Independent in Gallup. Gallup resident Rhonda Ray, of the Southwest Indian Foundation, portrays Turquoise Rose's mother. The film also features Native actors and entertainers Deshava Apachee, Vincent Craig, and Ernest Tsosie III.

    I first watched this movie when i was around 5 years old, I watched it with my family and growing up on the Navajo reservation by my grandmother on my dad's side it made me feel proud of the representation that it shows and being a little girl who rarely see's Native American's on the big screen and so how beautifully and authentic it was done, and now being a 20 year old Navajo living in California it brings a nostalgic feeling. This movie will always be in my heart ❤

I hope that you have better support for your movie making now in 2023, Native life is never easy, and should be exposed not only to hardships but success stories as well. God Bless you and I hope you keep the good going. Much Love from Oregon. WBW

    This is fabulous! Thank you for keeping your determination and making this incredible production. It brings hope to my heart that prejudice can be erased so understanding can have some space. The future can then be a better place for all. To see your son, the next generation immersed in this is absolutely heartwarming. It has been years that I am hoping First Nations will find the confidence to appreciate what they can bring and tell their stories with their own voices. I feel your amazing project has helped immensely with this. Many thanks to all concerned. Best of luck with your next endeavours! Mitakoye Oyasin :-)

    You have done a great job for not having a resume in directing. At the beginning I was disappointed that a mother castrates her daughter from moving forward into other cultures. Often families holds their children behind interrupting a trip to Europe for a journey into the past is not culturally correct. However, as the movie moves along the narrative, I could understand why she sends her daughter to say good bye to her grandmother. To say the last love to your ancestors is valuable. All the characters are unique and hopeful. A great casting and the music is lovely too. I love it.

      The writer/director Holt Hamilton was introduced to the Navajo people and community when he served a two year church mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints. He spent time in Shiprock, Kayenta, and Window Rock during those two years chopping wood, getting chased and bit by rezdogs, eating frybread and sharing the good word but most importantly meeting beautiful people who he continues to visit and be involved with today.
      The secret in making the film was to use real Navajo location and real Navajo actors. It was a huge collaboration with all involved. A majority of the crew were also locals from the areas we filmed at. It takes a village to raise a film. :)
      Thank you for your kind words. If you have a chance, we would appreciate your review of the film on Amazon. Here is a direct link: www.amazon.com/Turquoise-Rose-Natasha-Kaye-Johnson/dp/B07MXQS9FM/ref=tmm_aiv_title_1?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=

  • @springyork1474
    @springyork1474 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    My daughter, when she was 2, were on The Longest Walk in 1978. We joined in Kansas City, Kansas. On the way there,, I could tell how the horses and cows were facing, it was going to rain. When it did, someone let us sleep in their tent.
    My daughter's name was Runs Clear. I'm Spring Waters ( Wewailah ). I'm half Lakota Sioux, one quarter Cheyenne Arapahoe and one quarter white. Runs Clear's other half is Northern Cheyenne.
    We've had so many experiences, I keep wanting to write about it, but haven't. Many tribes were there. The first Navajo we met there was Ann Begay. I don't know her name, but another Navajo woman, when we walked, she showed me a good example of not littering that I applied ever since.
    After she was through smoking a cigarette, she put it out and put the cigarette butt in her pocket. Later when my children ate candy, they knew the trash went in my pocket.
    I grinned when they mentioned Cherokee. Not the Native ones, but I've heard it too. Many tried to tell me that they were part Cherokee with their grandmother had been a Cherokee princess.
    A few years before we joined The Longest Walk, I had a friend that worked in the ' Indian ' clinic in Oak Cliff, Texas. She told me that a man called claiming, " I'm a sixteenth Cherokee and I heard I could get a check! " Her answer, "Well, I'm full blooded Choctaw and I get a check, too. But I've got to work my butt off for it! "

      Thanks for your comment. The character in the movie wasn't supposed to know Navajo and so it sounds like that came across very well as it should have.

      Shi ma sani was the best. Speaking Navajo she made me laught. Brought back memories. The movie is a message, when a family member calls for you it is time to make it home can't delay things.

      Turquoise's character wasn't supposed to know how, part of the movie. :) Glad it worked out how it was suppose to in the script.
