Sakubi I think what they meant by "letting fans make awesome games" is the fact that Sega hired these devs. Even if they were being treated like traditional developers, it's still pretty awesone Sega gave them the job.
Actually the lead developer got his start making rom hacks and an unofficial Sonic engine. He then, without permission, ported Sonic cd to Android and pitched it to Sega, which they bought. He ported the other Sonic games, and then got to make this. This is the most grass roots Sonic ever made, literally developed by reputable members of the Sonic fan game community.
It makes me so happy to see this game being created, honouring it's legacy in the right way for once, I'd love it if more classic games get new versions created in the same design language as the originals, what a great idea!

It's not perfect,mainly because of one thing in this video he forgot to mention that was bad was the new bonus stage where u chase around a floating object to add to your setting.the mode was bad and annoying and unecessary but other than that perfect game 10/10 and it's how remakes of every game should be made by sticking to thier toots.
I hope Sega uses this engine to make more games from their other franchises. This game looks absolutely beautiful and I love the return to the roots. I really want a new Shinobi game that returns to the 2D pixel art. Just seeing what they could do with the music and visuals of this game, I am super excited to see what they could do with Shinobi.

Alot of things has changed in the 2-D platformer sub-genre. So no it doesnt deserve a 10 in todays standards, maybe back during the Genesis/Saturn era. (or maybe back in Gamecube/Xbox/PS2 era)

A lot of joy playing this! Thanks for letting me know the insta shield was only in no save mode. That's annoying though! I loved the insta shield in sonic 3! I was a bit bonkers for sonic in the 90's so loving all the throwbacks. I still remember most of the special stages. The drive to get perfect in every one is strong! And the music! AUGH! Love it

This is by far the best modern Sonic game I've played, and now... FINALLY a modern Sonic game in 60 fps. For fuck sake... Sonic Generations in 30 fps was so blurry that I had to slow down to see what was ahead of me. It ruined the game for me to be honest. You can't have lightning fast speed with low frame rates, they just don't mix. PS: What's wrong with having no save ability? That's how games were in the old days. That's the problem with games today, they are too fucking easy.
I'm glad Sonic Mania is doing well. Well can you really blame them? Sega can't work with 3D Sonic and actually find a formula. Every time they try it. They lose confidence in it. Throw away the formula. And weep for hours. And the best 3-D action we have gotten, is Sonic Colors which relies on 2-D sections for platforming that is anything passed basic. And we would not EVEN have Sonic Colors gameplay now if it wasn't for Sonic Lost World having mixed reviews. Sonic Forces would be based in Lost World mechanics.
Another thing that is good is that you most likely have to play each stage 2 or 3 times because there are so many ways to get through the stages. There isn't one direct/set path, which is great.
I don't know, there was no emotion in Generations imo. I don't know what it is.... And well, I just don't like modern Sonic but that's probably an unpopular opinion.
There's all this cool stuff, and yet the thing I care about the most is the aspect ratio. It's that easy to make a Sonic game work for me, just let me see where I'm going. That was my problem with the original Sonic games, as much as they were a part of my childhood and mean a lot to me as a videogame fan, I always wished I could actually go fast without having the entire stage ingrained into my brain so I could jump preemptively and avoid imminent danger. That's it, I literally had no other complaints about the games, just that I couldn't see things coming. Added to my Wishlist!
Definitely the BEST classic game. The only major drawback is 16-bit graphics vs having a completely remastered hand drawn graphic style like Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap Remastered by Lizard Cube.
This is some premium platforming/arcading/pinballing stuff with a great sense of flow, rythm, and speed. Nice OST, too. Really nice design overall. Go get it!

Sonic's fanbase needs to calm down. If this game doesn't get a 10, who the fuck even cares. Stop saying if it's mario or Zelda it gets a 10 by default, because that's clearly not the case. Zelda breath of the wild has earned that 10 as well as certain mario games. This reviewer just didn't strongly feel that the game deserved a 10, so leave it alone. Focus on the game, not the rating it got.
I completely agree with Matt, as soon as it became available, i played for 2 hours straight, constantly wowing and being surprised by the twists in the remade classics :)
I'm glad they stuck to the roots with Sonic Sonic is just a platformer and that's what it should have been instead of putting story and dialogue in it which made it really bad not to mention the level designs were bad too I'm glad they brought it back to the old school and that's why now they have one of the best games ever
I can say this is the best Sonic game ever...when we speak about gameplay. I'm disappointed that this game has only 4 new levels and rest of 8 are old levels from past classic Sonic games. I still appreciate that they made look act2-stages different and add some new features and elements, which makes game to look new and fresh. The gameplay is great, the presentation is great, music is absolutely PERFECT (thank you Tee Lopes!). The only thing is old levels from the past Sonic-games that I'm not happy, but I don't want to be too grumpy about it. This is the game, what we have needed/wanted for many years and we finally have this. I really hope that SEGA will make more classic Sonic games and keep him away from modern Sonic games in the future. And yeah, I saw the true ending for Sonic Mania and it's linked to Sonic Forces. -_- Anyway, it's good to have Sonic back on track. :)

Haven't beaten it, but I believe it's 12 Zones and I was near the end of Zone 3 atleast 20-something minutes in. If I'm going by the original plus the fact that you have 3 characters (minus the special stages, extra modes, and Super Sonic Level), I'd say it should be around 4.5-6 hours long all together. Definitely worth getting if you like Sonic.
It's replayable with the multiplayer modes though. It's been said that the main campaign is about 4 hours so considering secrets, you could probably get about 6-8 hours, and that's only if you're good.
I couldn't agree more. I knew this game would be good, but I never dreamed it would surpass the originals in absolutely every way. Sega made the right choice handing this to a new developer - one whose staff has proven themselves to be dedicated, loving fans of this series and who could be trusted to pull off such a feat. The fact is, not even Sonic 3 & Knuckles was THIS good. It was so awe inspiring to play this game, I had to blink and snap my fingers a few times to make sure this really happened and that Sonic Mania was actually made and given a wide release as the first "true" follow-up to the classics in over 20 years. To anyone who was calling this a glorified hack before (or saying Forces is the next "real" Sonic) ... this is just the reality of the situation: Sonic Team has not ever and will never make something this good. 11 / 10
Jono Zygorodimos crash bandicoot had nothing new going on, it only was a "grapic boost" (you even see that kinda stuff in fan games), in the other hand, sonic mania absolutelly reinvents the formula of the old perfect games, adding more levels, abilitys, changing the context depending on them. for short:crash bandicoot: nothing new and repetitive sonic mania: reinventive and upgraded, plus (and this is only me being proud of the game that i play since i was motherfucking 3yo) sonic is an even better old classic
Hrisi2003 productions actually crash bandicoot is just a remaster, the poor amount of new levels or characters (and the fact that the most important feature is the graphic update) is what makes it a remaster (and those levels that i'm talking about technically aren't even new levels, because, as i heard, those are only levels that didn't pass the directors cut, so it would mean that those levels were already made), because for being a remake it would've had to be entirelly remade, kinda obvius but that's what the word stands for. and for sonic, you would ask yourself: "if sonic mania is a half remaster half remake, why did it end up with a 9 of this youtuber". well that's just because they fixed what the old games did wrong, literally judt that, they focused on, say, knuckles gameplay, wich tended to be rlly boring and useless, that change led to another, that other change needed the remake of some feature, and this change needed other. that's how sonic mania was done a remake-remaster (even though it's more of remake than a remaster, like, 70 to 30 percent respectivelly). the difference with crash is that they didn't, they conserved the formula so perfectly that it almost is the same game but with better grapics, in the third game for example in the level where you play in a umm watercycle? is it called like that? anyway the first level in the water area, it had such a bad gameplay that you would easilly miss all the boxes and shit, and in the years that the game was developed it was acceptable, the problem is that it doesn't fits for nowadays gameplay confortness, they didn't fix it, so it's still bad, it's just that in the original game's time it didn't felt like it, now it's easier to say if that mechanic is bad or good. after saying all of this... i realize that crash coudln't have been repaired AND been a remaster at the same time, maybe the mistakes made in that time make those games non-remasterable... but i dunno, and even after saying all of this, crash is a gud game after all, i would've given it a 7.7/10 or sorta...

I think sega got it right this year. People in the fanbase who like the classics easy gameplay, gimmicky stages, and voiceless attitude will play mania. The part of the fanbase who like the modern story telling, wide cast of characters, and blinding speed will probably enjoy forces. And people new to the fanbase can play both. I feel like this is the formula sega should do every year. A 2D game bringing people back to the classics and a 3D game improving on the modern style.
I gotta say, this game is outstanding. The graphics, the music and especially, the gameplay. Even if your the biggest Sonic hater out there, you can't deny that this is a solid platformer. Sonic Mania is definitely one of my top 10 games of 2017, and we still have plenty of other great games coming out later this year. This also gives me some hope on Sonic Forces. 2017 is possibly the best year for video games.

I'm really enjoying Sonic Mania on the Nintendo Switch. Being able to play from the TV and/or anywhere in Handheld Mode or Tabletop Mode. It is by far the best Sonic game ever and it's getting amazing review scores. The developers really knew how to keep Classic Sonic true to its 2D Genesis roots and just nailed it. However, it is somewhat stupid when some people say that it's the Sonic game we've wait over two decades for, or just saying that Sonic in general was never good (Cough, cough, IGN). Aside from what others think about the overall Sonic franchise or what they think they know, and some annoying/ridiculous opinions, there are many good 2D and 3D Sonic games out there. It's all just based on and matters on how well you played those games and if they are good and fun. The look and sound is super awesome and I'm hyped to play this. This game appears to have less of shit in the old games that were there just to annoy you. This looks awesome.
I'm mixed on the game. I love the classic levels, I love how well everything plays. What I don't like are some of the new levels and the difficulty. Some of these levels, and bosses, are WAY too difficult (I'm an experienced player and spent hours just trying to get past FBZ and SSZ). All in all, I do like the game, even if some of the new levels are a little too "busy" graphically. The music is great!
Speed Power I own it on Switch. Played about half of it so far. It's nothing mind blowing. It's just same old Sonic with rearranged levels and a few new mechanics. Will probably beat it tonight then won't pick it up again.
CrimsoN a game doesn't need to be mind blowing to be fun (cough cough breath of the wild cough). If its fun then love it and i think Mania is beyond fun IMO.
The palette is new and improved actually, but in a subtle and very tasteful manner. It still has a limited palette and doesn't try to make everything perfectly smooth which would have ruined the aesthetics. Probably takes a very hard core pixel art connoisseur to truly appreciate it, but I can tell you it's some of the best pixel art produced in recent years, possibly of all time
the best sonic game would have to be one where its like an endless runner, but super fast, broken up into various stages, Epic chase sequences/Boss fights with voiced cutscenes.
No way you could ever call this, a spruced up remake, the best Sonic ever. Good as it may be, Sonic & Knuckles was a piece of absolute hardware genius that breathed life into your old Sonic games, it is a milestone in video game history.

Well, after playing this game I can only say that my nostalgia trip has been a good one. This is an amazing game, certainly if you're fond of the Sonic classics. If only the Saturn had something like this.
Classic Sonic formula is and will always be the best option for a Sonic game. It's already proven that Sonic doesn't work well in 3D environments. You can say it's nostalgia all you want, but great level design and great gameplay with precise controls and no exposition, with awesome soundtrack on top of it is what makes good Sonic games. And this is something you can only find in 2d sidescroller games.
Ikagura no it shouldn't mario 64 is more about exploring while sonic is about speed, in my opinion Sega got something with the boost game play for modern Sonic withes works, its fast and if your good at it "withes i am not" you can find ALOT of short cuts and diffrent ways to go through the level just look at Sea side hill in sonic generations for a example that level uses the boost really really well and uses your skills to get through levels faster

Another thing that is good is that you most likely have to play each stage 2 or 3 times because there are so many ways to get through the stages. There isn't one direct/set path, which is great.

I don't know, there was no emotion in Generations imo. I don't know what it is.... And well, I just don't like modern Sonic but that's probably an unpopular opinion.
There's all this cool stuff, and yet the thing I care about the most is the aspect ratio. It's that easy to make a Sonic game work for me, just let me see where I'm going. That was my problem with the original Sonic games, as much as they were a part of my childhood and mean a lot to me as a videogame fan, I always wished I could actually go fast without having the entire stage ingrained into my brain so I could jump preemptively and avoid imminent danger. That's it, I literally had no other complaints about the games, just that I couldn't see things coming. Added to my Wishlist!

Definitely the BEST classic game. The only major drawback is 16-bit graphics vs having a completely remastered hand drawn graphic style like Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap Remastered by Lizard Cube.

Sonic's fanbase needs to calm down. If this game doesn't get a 10, who the fuck even cares. Stop saying if it's mario or Zelda it gets a 10 by default, because that's clearly not the case. Zelda breath of the wild has earned that 10 as well as certain mario games. This reviewer just didn't strongly feel that the game deserved a 10, so leave it alone. Focus on the game, not the rating it got.

I can say this is the best Sonic game ever...when we speak about gameplay.
I'm disappointed that this game has only 4 new levels and rest of 8 are old levels from past classic Sonic games. I still appreciate that they made look act2-stages different and add some new features and elements, which makes game to look new and fresh.
The gameplay is great, the presentation is great, music is absolutely PERFECT (thank you Tee Lopes!). The only thing is old levels from the past Sonic-games that I'm not happy, but I don't want to be too grumpy about it.
This is the game, what we have needed/wanted for many years and we finally have this. I really hope that SEGA will make more classic Sonic games and keep him away from modern Sonic games in the future. And yeah, I saw the true ending for Sonic Mania and it's linked to Sonic Forces. -_-

Just bought the game on the Switch, and I gotta say, it's really good.
Is this worth getting? How many hours do you get out of it?
Haven't beaten it, but I believe it's 12 Zones and I was near the end of Zone 3 atleast 20-something minutes in. If I'm going by the original plus the fact that you have 3 characters (minus the special stages, extra modes, and Super Sonic Level), I'd say it should be around 4.5-6 hours long all together. Definitely worth getting if you like Sonic.
I completed about 80 percent it took me 6 hours. Totally worth it
There's also replayability and finding the rings to gain new abilities.
It's replayable with the multiplayer modes though. It's been said that the main campaign is about 4 hours so considering secrets, you could probably get about 6-8 hours, and that's only if you're good.

I couldn't agree more. I knew this game would be good, but I never dreamed it would surpass the originals in absolutely every way. Sega made the right choice handing this to a new developer - one whose staff has proven themselves to be dedicated, loving fans of this series and who could be trusted to pull off such a feat.
The fact is, not even Sonic 3 & Knuckles was THIS good. It was so awe inspiring to play this game, I had to blink and snap my fingers a few times to make sure this really happened and that Sonic Mania was actually made and given a wide release as the first "true" follow-up to the classics in over 20 years.
To anyone who was calling this a glorified hack before (or saying Forces is the next "real" Sonic) ... this is just the reality of the situation: Sonic Team has not ever and will never make something this good. 11 / 10

sonic mania: reinventive and upgraded, plus (and this is only me being proud of the game that i play since i was motherfucking 3yo) sonic is an even better old classic
Hrisi2003 productions actually crash bandicoot is just a remaster, the poor amount of new levels or characters (and the fact that the most important feature is the graphic update) is what makes it a remaster (and those levels that i'm talking about technically aren't even new levels, because, as i heard, those are only levels that didn't pass the directors cut, so it would mean that those levels were already made), because for being a remake it would've had to be entirelly remade, kinda obvius but that's what the word stands for.
and for sonic, you would ask yourself: "if sonic mania is a half remaster half remake, why did it end up with a 9 of this youtuber". well that's just because they fixed what the old games did wrong, literally judt that, they focused on, say, knuckles gameplay, wich tended to be rlly boring and useless, that change led to another, that other change needed the remake of some feature, and this change needed other. that's how sonic mania was done a remake-remaster (even though it's more of remake than a remaster, like, 70 to 30 percent respectivelly).
the difference with crash is that they didn't, they conserved the formula so perfectly that it almost is the same game but with better grapics, in the third game for example in the level where you play in a umm watercycle? is it called like that? anyway the first level in the water area, it had such a bad gameplay that you would easilly miss all the boxes and shit, and in the years that the game was developed it was acceptable, the problem is that it doesn't fits for nowadays gameplay confortness, they didn't fix it, so it's still bad, it's just that in the original game's time it didn't felt like it, now it's easier to say if that mechanic is bad or good. after saying all of this... i realize that crash coudln't have been repaired AND been a remaster at the same time, maybe the mistakes made in that time make those games non-remasterable... but i dunno, and even after saying all of this, crash is a gud game after all, i would've given it a 7.7/10 or sorta...

Sonic, Tails and Knuckles more or less play the same (except for the spin dash which I found some ppl say they hardly ever used it without reminding themselves), yes their are new ways to explore the levels but tht doesnt mean its "innovative/redefines" or something tht will b expanded upon in other games ranging from other AAA and indie developers, since it already has back in the original trio. From wht I can tell if u think this is a 10 then thts ur opinion but we're talking about the General gaming community. If this "redefined" momentum platforming then I agree but no its more or less same as the original trio with some minor tweaks and additions. Nothing tht raises the set standard for future games of the genre in the industry. So this game is deserving of a 9/10 but its far from a 10/10. 9/10s are givin to games tht hav met the set standard tht ppl hav come to expect from a game of tht particular sub-genre where its more than enough to b worth its price and recommendation, but it just hasnt surpassed the set standard or innovated wht the genre shuld b like for the future of the industry.

Why is this the greatest video game review ever?
I think sega got it right this year. People in the fanbase who like the classics easy gameplay, gimmicky stages, and voiceless attitude will play mania. The part of the fanbase who like the modern story telling, wide cast of characters, and blinding speed will probably enjoy forces. And people new to the fanbase can play both. I feel like this is the formula sega should do every year. A 2D game bringing people back to the classics and a 3D game improving on the modern style.
I gotta say, this game is outstanding. The graphics, the music and especially, the gameplay. Even if your the biggest Sonic hater out there, you can't deny that this is a solid platformer. Sonic Mania is definitely one of my top 10 games of 2017, and we still have plenty of other great games coming out later this year. This also gives me some hope on Sonic Forces. 2017 is possibly the best year for video games.

I'm really enjoying Sonic Mania on the Nintendo Switch. Being able to play from the TV and/or anywhere in Handheld Mode or Tabletop Mode. It is by far the best Sonic game ever and it's getting amazing review scores. The developers really knew how to keep Classic Sonic true to its 2D Genesis roots and just nailed it. However, it is somewhat stupid when some people say that it's the Sonic game we've wait over two decades for, or just saying that Sonic in general was never good (Cough, cough, IGN). Aside from what others think about the overall Sonic franchise or what they think they know, and some annoying/ridiculous opinions, there are many good 2D and 3D Sonic games out there. It's all just based on and matters on how well you played those games and if they are good and fun.

I'm mixed on the game. I love the classic levels, I love how well everything plays. What I don't like are some of the new levels and the difficulty. Some of these levels, and bosses, are WAY too difficult (I'm an experienced player and spent hours just trying to get past FBZ and SSZ). All in all, I do like the game, even if some of the new levels are a little too "busy" graphically. The music is great!
9/10 is a really good for a game that is essentially just a old school rehash. Very few risks and basically lives off Genesis nostalgia.

CrimsoN a game doesn't need to be mind blowing to be fun (cough cough breath of the wild cough). If its fun then love it and i think Mania is beyond fun IMO.
The palette is new and improved actually, but in a subtle and very tasteful manner. It still has a limited palette and doesn't try to make everything perfectly smooth which would have ruined the aesthetics. Probably takes a very hard core pixel art connoisseur to truly appreciate it, but I can tell you it's some of the best pixel art produced in recent years, possibly of all time
the best sonic game would have to be one where its like an endless runner, but super fast, broken up into various stages, Epic chase sequences/Boss fights with voiced cutscenes.

Well, after playing this game I can only say that my nostalgia trip has been a good one. This is an amazing game, certainly if you're fond of the Sonic classics. If only the Saturn had something like this.
Classic Sonic formula is and will always be the best option for a Sonic game. It's already proven that Sonic doesn't work well in 3D environments. You can say it's nostalgia all you want, but great level design and great gameplay with precise controls and no exposition, with awesome soundtrack on top of it is what makes good Sonic games. And this is something you can only find in 2d sidescroller games.

no it shouldn't mario 64 is more about exploring while sonic is about speed, in my opinion Sega got something with the boost game play for modern Sonic withes works, its fast and if your good at it "withes i am not" you can find ALOT of short cuts and diffrent ways to go through the level just look at Sea side hill in sonic generations for a example that level uses the boost really really well and uses your skills to get through levels faster
