    Ren actually paid for the rights to use the original, Vera Hall's acapella from the 1930's. So it's not the Moby sample, it's his own production of the original. In regards to sampling, Ren uses them to pay homage to the artists of whom he draws inspiration from. As for the Haters who claim he can't do it without samples? Ren has a ton of tracks which have no sampling, all originals and all top tier.

      To say Ren samples bc he can't do it by himself is ridiculous. @MugnifyRTS How can you let this bs stand?
      Ren's not just a rapper. He's a singer with a hundred different voices, a multi instrumentalist, a writer, a performer, an actor, a lyricist, a genre bender. Ren can do it all.
      There are plenty of reaction videos on this channel to easily prove this.

    I was born in the 70s. If the artist doing the sampling pays for the rights, attributes it, or releases a non-monetized track then I have no problem with it. It still takes musical skill and talent to take a sample and incorporate it into what you are doing. Even more when you alter the sample. And it can be a good way to introduce people to older music.
    All music (really all invention and creativity) is derivative of that which came before it. There are twelve notes in the music scale we use. There are only so many words that make sense in a song. There are only a handful of plots that all stories fall into. True newness and uniqueness are an illusion.
    A lot of people that don't like sampling or say the people that use them aren't musicians, listen to pop artists that have their songs ghost written. The history of music (including the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90, 00s, and 20s) is filled with musicians doing covers. Jimi Hendrix covered Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower". Nobody with a brain thinks Jimi wasn't a skilled musician.
    Plus, if you are into hip hop, one of the biggest parts of the history is grabbing some records, scratching and mixing them together. Not exactly the same mechanism as sampling, but the same effect. You saw less of it by the late 80s and 90s era of gangsta rap, but the era of Grand Master Flash up through the heyday of Run DMC and the Beastie Boys, was all about using other music to build your beats.
    People need to get over it.

      Well said!! I too was born, well, almost in the 70s, let's just say I was literally born in the very last month of the 1960s..lol.
      Just to add to what you said about the DJs scratching and sampling in real time at the clubs, back when we were in grade school still, the catalyst that brought samples from the turntables to studio songs was the Beastie Boys, and the vehicle was their sophomore album Paul's Boutique. Not even selling half of what their debut album sold in '86, it was considered a commercial flop at the time. Trashed by music critiques and many hip-hop heads as gimmicky and corny. 5-6yrs later you could hardly find a rap or hip-hop track in the top 10 that DIDN'T use some sampling.
      Today, IMO, and I've heard many other true hip-hop heads say the same, Paul's Boutique is a must listen for any aspiring rapper on the come up that wants to know a big page in the history of the culture and wants to respect the game.

    Ren said that while he couldn’t relate directly to Vera Hall’s troubles, the line really resonated with him. He’s throw a little light here on his own troubles but of course a single song could not do that full justice. But the struggles for Vera Hall, and for Ren, are very relatable in a general sense and ultimately the message of hop is very powerful.

    I’ve spent so much of my life listening to lesser known rap artists as well as mainstream ones…sampling has ALWAYS been a part of rap. Especially some underground stuff, that’s how that music gets made.
    And then especially with Ren, he chooses his samples very specifically and it always adds another layer and meaning to the song. “Troubles” is a song he’s covered himself with his band I believe that means a lot to him, and as this is his song about HIS struggle-his troubles-it adds to the story.

    • @sunshynff
      @sunshynff 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree, mostly, but it hasn't always been part of it, but pretty close. Before The Beastie Boys second album Paul's Boutique, sampling wasn't a thing really, except for hip-hop DJs literally spinning records in clubs, mixing scratches and samples into a beat in real time.
      Paul's Boutique not only used a sample, they went nuts!! Their label at the time had a fit because their lawers had to spend so much time dealing with copyright fees, and the fact that "sampling" had no legal status in copyright law in the late 1980s, so it was uncharted waters the lawyers had to navigate. Unfortunately the album was a commercial flop, meaning that compared to they're debut album that blew the doors off sales records, this one didn't sell even half what the first one did, at least early on.
      Music reviewers and hip-hop heads for the most part trashed it, said all the sampling was corny or a gimmick, and that a real artist didn't need to use other people's music to make a hit record, sound familiar? Fast forward about 5-6yrs, into the 1990s and you almost couldn't find a song in the top 10 pop chart or top 25 hip-hop charts that WASN'T using samples in their songs!! Today, Paul's Boutique is considered by most true hip-hop heads as required listening for any aspiring rapper on the come up, if they want to know their history and respect the culture. If you've never heard it you should check it out, its truly a master piece. Ren speaks highly of it.

      Sampling has been going on since the 50s and Hip Hop itself is built on sampled, broken and re-arranged beats since Cool Herc and Afrika Bambata

    • @sunshynff
      @sunshynff 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@gavinwilson2071 .....I didn't say that the Beastie Boys literally invented it, but the 50s? Seems like a bit of a stretch there, or even back to Cool Herk and Bambata, you know most of that was done in real time, at the club or a show, which is what I said. Put it this way, the Beasties did to a degree and with a certain style of using samples, that it became known as "sampling", before that is was using a clip, or blending or mashup. Like I said, I'm quite sure the Beasties were influenced by the artist you mentioned and many more, and built on what they started, I'm just saying there's been music documentaries and a lot of commentary about Paul's Boutique and how it introduced sampling as a staple into Hip-Hop and even mainstream pop eventually.

      Ren paid for the rights to use it in his song. Big difference from others who sample without asking for permission. My opinion anyways. The ones he sampled (and tweaked it) without asking permission he made no money off of them.

    • @tribute1965
      @tribute1965 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@kellyt5341 Agreed. I knew that Ren got the rights to use the vocal. The '80's were the wild west for sample use without rights, and there were lots of law suits. Do commercial artists still use other peoples works without clearance? That would be pretty weak. I will say when Ren uses samples, or does retakes, it always feels like an homage. Another visitor born in the 70´s here. Samples are legit, absolutely. And a well placed sample can elevate your song/ track to something really great. However, it´s a bit like using a certaint effect. If you overdo it or get it wrong, you might achieve the opposite of what was intended. I wish I was better with that stuff myself.

    I love music, it keeps me going, since live isn't easy this days for me. A song, track tune or whatever it's called has to connect with me on emotional bases. That can be the the old school classic bands from the 60s, 70s or whatever. In the last 16 months it's mainly Ren, because he covers almost everything I like.

    With great power comes great responsibility, and Ren is truly a hero! He is using his growing powers and platform for so much more than simply creating brilliant music. Ren has said that he always had this feeling that he was meant to change the world for the better. So much that he defiantly yelled a challenge to evil into an empty room. And then he got sick…
    Ren has now shared the full story of his health journey in 8 video chapters leading up to the release of this song and what a journey it has been. If anyone hasn’t already watched them, I highly recommend you do. With all the chapters he is showing immense strength in sharing his story that is so hard to tell, being vulnerable and telling it because he hopes it will help others and raise awareness. And here he is with another rendition of that story, now told through music with a fire beat and delivering a message of hope. The world needs Ren 🐰🕳️
    Oh and Ren just put out a live acoustic version too and it’s beautiful ❤
    Edit: Did you just call Ren “purely a hip hop artist” or did I mishear that? Cause he most definitely isn’t. Rapping isn’t even his main thing. He’s said that he feels the most at home singing and playing guitar. He just happened to start blowing up before putting out a hip hop album (which he did for fun and to prove that he could) so a lot of people got to know him through that.
    Also who are all these people supposedly saying he can’t make music? Do they exist? Cause they certainly don’t know anything about Ren then. Yes, he occasionally uses a sample or does retakes where he puts his own spin on songs he loves, but the amount of 100% original music in this man’s catalogue is really rather mind blowing considering how much time he lost being too sick to do anything. As for this specific song, he payed to sample the original because he really resonates with the lyrics and the song holds extra meaning to him as it’s one he has covered when busking too. And he has done a LOT with the sample in the production which takes a whole other set of skills. On top of everything else he is capable of. Saying Ren can’t write music is absolutely ridiculous. He’s got music in his soul and it’s pouring out of him.

    Samples when done correctly and legally are fine as it then pays homage to the original artist in this case Vera Hall and allows new ears to hear in this case what was first composed in 1937, Hell if it was not for samples etc I would not have an interest in the old Mississippi Blues which by the way came from listening to the original 1970 Rock bands which all used for instance Muddy Waters influence, So Samples today can lead you down a whole new Rabbit Hole which is a good thing.

If your samples are a crutch, and the only good part of a song then so be it...I'm not interested. In this specific case Ren has an attachment to the sampled song and especially the line "ain't nobody know my troubles but God". And to finish the thought, Ren produces soo so much of his own stuff. Makes his own beats, etc so there's no doubt in my mind that he's paying homage with his samples...not trying to create hits that he couldn't figure out how to do himself. I'm Gen X (B. 1965 at the very end of the boomers)...Sampling USED TO BE seen as someone being lazy about coming up with their own and original ideas, musically. It was tiresome listening to the same ole shit all the time just REPACKAGED as a new idea (on the radio WHICH was basically all most people had at the time). I blame the music industry for that. Its MUCH different now ESPECIALLY with the explosion of musicians and vocalists having their content VIEWED BY MILLIONS AND MILLIONS via social media.
    It is seen more now ( I believe) as an homage to the music and for the original Artist THAT CREATED IT. A show of respect for: a sound, an emotion, an ideal, a message that is CLASSIC and stands the test of time.

    Gen X (b. 1967) here, um we do not uniformly look down on sampling. It is like any other thing in music, you can do it well and it serves the song or you can misuse it or over use it and then it is just annoying. I feel the same way about the use of autotune. Back to sampling, it has been interlinked with hip hop from the beginning, if a Gen Xer doesn't like sampling then I question if they are truly a hip hop fan. To all you Xers who do not like sampling, go listen to Paul's Boutique by the Beasty Boys, and if that does not melt your mind you got no soul... Sampling. When done respectfully and with royalties paid to the original artist, no problem. The Idea that Ren couldn’t have done the part himself is way off though. He has played and sung that track with the Big Push and needed no help. What I think it is with him, is that he actively wants to draw attention to the original work and show his respect for it. Doesn’t make any difference to me who is using the sample as long as they get permission to use it.
    As for someone saying Ren’s not a musician cuz he has used a sample? That sounds like something taken out of context and I’d want to read the comment for myself. Something seems like it’s missing in that. Also, so many commenters on Ren mention their age and, of those that do, the majority are GenX or Boomers. I don’t think younger generations leave their age in comments but they’re out there. I liked your attention to the lyrics.
