they are JUDGES. Their job is to tell you where you went wrong. But for a contestant hoping to make it big, being cocky and arrogant will get you nowhere.

Also remember, it's a tv show...they have to keep things entertaining for people, so they put the goofiest, ugliest, worst singing people in the actual show, rather than the other hundreds or even thousands of normal people that try out. The judge will judge you by anything and everything. You're supposed to be a singer. If I walked in there with blue hair, piercings out the ass, etc, that's making an instant impact. It isn't just about a great voice. You also gotta have the personality, and for the most part, the looks to pull it off.
At that point in time it was a normal thing to call people gay as an insult. Whether it's right or wrong or anyone agrees it should be, that was the case back then. Now a days this conversation would have gone a bit differently, Simon would have laughed like he did here until she started going after the other judges, but Paula would have likely added into her speech something along the lines of what you said.
Simon's reaction is perfect - it didn't phase him and he didn't try to take a stab back or defend himself. That's the best thing you can do in a situation like that, haha.

The attitude was perfectly playful up until she cut off Randy, that's when I think it ended for her. Even when Simon basically told her it's fine after Paula intervened, she could've recovered if she had ended it there, but she took it a step too far when she told them to buy the single. Her chance was instantly gone after that.
Success in any competitive field requires social intelligence. She was offered not one, but two "saves" but either didn't recognize them or just didn't care.

Paula is always sweet and never tries to insult people. She even is too sweet to tell people who suck they suck. So here, you can tell she was really disappointed in the girl and had it with the attitude. She hoped the girl would realize she took it too far and even Simon tried to explain what he meant by his comment. But then after the “buy the single” comment, you can see Paula just completely gave up on the girl and realized she’ll never humble herself.
I wonder if she ever looks back like “fuck why did i do that”. I know I would. Pride and emotions can really make you complete overreact. Gotta know how to control them or you’ll do things like this.

Why is race brought into this? Whether she was black, blue, white, purple, green, yellow, orange, she was disrespectful as several races have been on this show, no color barrier, just stupidity. Now with that said, yes the judges can be harsh, but it's foolish for any contestant to mouth off in such a way because they only make themselves look incredibly foolish. The hard part about it is off camera, Simon could've said something that merited this young lady being upset, but what we see is her foolish attitude. Both parties had a play in it. I do agree though, she shouldn't have chopped up Randy. Whatever color, her attitude was her ticket home and why we still don't know her name to this day.

they are JUDGES. Their job is to tell you where you went wrong. But for a contestant hoping to make it big, being cocky and arrogant will get you nowhere.
Isn't that still doing their job? By describing how they sound and laughing at them, it's a sign that they need a lot more practice. Plus, it was overly disrespectful for her to tell Simon he was gay. She said it out of anger, the judges say the things they say because they mean it.

Also remember, it's a tv show...they have to keep things entertaining for people, so they put the goofiest, ugliest, worst singing people in the actual show, rather than the other hundreds or even thousands of normal people that try out. The judge will judge you by anything and everything. You're supposed to be a singer. If I walked in there with blue hair, piercings out the ass, etc, that's making an instant impact. It isn't just about a great voice. You also gotta have the personality, and for the most part, the looks to pull it off.

At that point in time it was a normal thing to call people gay as an insult. Whether it's right or wrong or anyone agrees it should be, that was the case back then. The attitude was perfectly playful up until she cut off Randy, that's when I think it ended for her. Even when Simon basically told her it's fine after Paula intervened, she could've recovered if she had ended it there, but she took it a step too far when she told them to buy the single. Her chance was instantly gone after that.
Success in any competitive field requires social intelligence. She was offered not one, but two "saves" but either didn't recognize them or just didn't care.
