  • Why I Don't Paint NNM (Non Metallic Metal) [CT40K]
NMM, or Non-Metallic Metal, is a technique in which non-metallic paints are applied for the purpose of simulating a metallic surface on a miniature, as opposed to using a metallic paint, which typically has some metal or other reflective material suspended in the medium. It can be an extremely striking effect, but I'm not convinced it's for my miniatures, and in this video I explain why.

I've seen a couple miniature painters that will paint an nmm surface and then very gently dry brush it with a matching true metallic paint specifically to get the effect you're talking about. I've never tried it myself, but it could be fun to mess around with to see what you think of it. The idea being that in perfect lighting, the nmm carries the intended effect, but in any other environment, the flecking of the true metals helps to fill in the gaps left by the tailored approach.

Oh interesting I don't think I've seen that technique before 😮 Might be worth investigating!
