Notice how half of these commercials feature adults playing and wanting to buy video games, a stark contrast to the "video games are just for kids" idea that people have somehow gotten over the years.
I remember these when they were on TV. Believe it or not, the Atari WAS a family thing back then so when these commercials showed the family sitting around the TV like that in the first commercial, when the Atari first came out, it WAS like that. My family would crowd around the TV when we first got the Atari. It wasn't until later on when they started adapting all the arcade games and started marketing more to kids that it became more just a "kid" thing. I still have my Atari and all my games. It still works and I still play it!
I would also like to add, that most families, even well-off families, only owned 1 television set. The resulting "closeness" exposed Parents to Atari, and encouraged their involvement.
Thanks to one of my videogame design classes having a lecture about the history of video games, I wouldn't have gotten that E.T. Nope joke at first.For those who don't understand the whole "nope nope nope" joke, E.T. was a horrible game, it was buggy, a piece of crap, and had more copies produced than there were Ataris to play it on (I guess they figured people would want multiple copies of the game lol). It was one of the main reasons why the video game market crashed back in the early 80s and people figured that video games was just one of those "fads" that last only a couple of years. Nintendo saved the video game industry with the NES a year or two later.
So, like... I get the concept behind the first commercial, but it just seems like the family is constantly getting bothered by babysitters who only want to be there to neglect their children and play Atari. I wouldn't want that! Would you?
Okay I need people to reply to me so I can get clarification. Is the guy saying "ICE HOCKEY BY ACTIVISION " Or "I STALK YOU BY ACTIVISION" Because if that guy stalks me I think I have the right to defend my self because of the castle law which is "If someone like activision who is unwanted stalks you and won't leave you can use self defense." SO DONT STALK ME BY ACTIVISION

The first Atari commercial, depicting a "photogenic" family watching their kids play Atari, whilst baby-sitters lobby for business, is historically accurate. This was life in the late 70's/early 80's. I know - I was there! Most parents(and Grandparents, if present) enjoyed watching their kids play Atari. Also, believe it or not, people enjoyed dressing/looking nice.
