My family is so (boringly) traditional with Thanksgiving. They never want to try new ideas for sides or ways to cook the turkey. I just learned several new recipes that I'd *LOVE* to try!! Thank you Kent for bringing back some very fond memories. My family would gather every year for thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and any other excuse we could use to get together. The men would all stand around the smoker outside and cook while the ladies would have the house to sit and visit and just “catch up”. Sadly I’ve lost my grandparents, my parents and many other family members and those of that are left miss them dearly. I’ve found myself to be one of the oldest members of my family that’s left. My kids are grown and have families of their own and live too far away to just jump in the truck and run to dads. We don’t have the big get togethers anymore and rarely see one another but seeing you and your family sitting around your table made my heart happy. My grandmother even had the same green glasses. Thank you again for all you do and thank you for bringing those memories back for awhile. I’ll be praying for you and your family.
And here I thought the women folk were doing all the rest of the cooking (all those casseroles, dressing, pies, cakes, etc.) 😊and taking care of that passel of chilluns, making sure the table is set, cleaning the cooking utensils so they wouldn’t pile up. 😂
Being an Old Geezer now, yes, the greatest Joy is the memory of Thanksgivings of our childhood The nice Warm house on cold days, the great smell of the cooking Turkey all over the house with whiffs of those Pumpkin and apple Pies, with Grandmother and her Apron fixing all that fine food. Now I am the cook with an Empty nest household. Thank God one can never erase those Memories of our youth and how Wonderful they are. I have cooked and had turkey every which way. I realized I just like it baked. And after brining for years I learned to just coat the bird with a layer of butter all over. That’s it. Best bird I’ve ever had, consistent, simple, easy, and affordable.

We will be thrilled to keep you two in our prayers! Kent, few years ago we had some Chinese students at Tulsa University come to our house for an American thanksgiving. As I was explaining our custom to them, it came to me that Thanksgiving was a spiritual holiday. Puritan Christians from England came to these shores, not for economic or even political reasons. They came because they wanted to freely worship according to their conscience but were persecuted by the official religious establishment. So, they came because of persecution. God sustained them in the New World. So, thanksgiving is really a celebration of the persecuted Church and God’s sustaining grace. This is so much more important than material prosperity! Be sure to thank God for establishing religious freedom on these shores.

When I do turkey I mix spices into the butter and then put it under the skin. Always turns out great!

Kent, few years ago we had some Chinese students at Tulsa University come to our house for an American thanksgiving. As I was explaining our custom to them, it came to me that Thanksgiving was a spiritual holiday. Puritan Christians from England came to these shores, not for economic or even political reasons. They came because they wanted to freely worship according to their conscience but were persecuted by the official religious establishment. So, they came because of persecution. God sustained them in the New World. So, thanksgiving is really a celebration of the persecuted Church and God’s sustaining grace. This is so much more important than material prosperity! Be sure to thank God for establishing religious freedom on these shores.

@@gotdangedcommiesitellyahwa6298 maybe try and cook smaller portions of food? That helped me A LOT with my food waste problems! The eyes are usually more hungry than the mouth!

Your story about the creamed corn recipe and the cowboys wanting it for dessert kinda reminds me of a quick snack we have in my country, mais con hielo; frozen sweet corn in condensed milk and ice, maybe a bit of fruit too.
