Blacksburg has become a retirement destination for wealthy Boomers who have way more money to spend than a bunch of broke college kids. The rapid growth of Virginia Tech over the past decade or so has completely overwhelmed the infrastructure of the sleepy rural college town which is is making it much less desirable for the well heeled Boomer retirees from the DC area that the mayor wants to attract to the area.
The mayor is crazy for not being thrilled about the growth. Those students are an economic vehicle for the area.
