After rewatching this one, I never realized how well Virginia Tech’s defense did in this game. Picked off JT Barrett 3 times and had 7 sacks.

VT was coming off an 8-5 season in 2013 and 7-6 in 2012. Both of those were a far cry from the 8 straight 10-win seasons they had from 2004 to 2011. I thought when they won this game, they were back. They followed this up with losses to East Carolina and Georgia Tech and stumbled to a 7-6 record, 3-5 in the ACC. By far one of the most grueling seasons to endure as a Hokie fan. Beamer retired after the next season.

Doggy and that it was. I still get mad when other VT fans try to talk about that win as one of the best in school history. It meant nothing. It didn’t propel VT, and it didn’t hurt Ohio State. It was basically a scrimmage.

Hokie 4 Life it was cool that we handed the future national champs their only loss of the season. Even better because this was the first year of the playoff, and Ohio State had to EARN their spot. I know they were only ranked 8th at the name, but it’s tough not to consider this VT’s second win against a top 5 opponent.

It's one of the best victories as a hokie. Sadly, the rest of the year and many like it are plagued with ruined seasons.
I remember leaving the 'Shoe that night saying to my friend "This is going to be a long year." We looked so bad that night. 13 wins later...National Champions.

Just when VT makes you think they've figured it out, they stomp your heart out. This win, then lost to ECU. Start off 4-0, then lose by 2 TDs to ODU. When I've made it through an entire season without feeling embarrassed to be a Hokies fan will be the best day of my life.

Honestly, I think its more shocking that VT would lose its next 2 games, lose 3-0 against a WF team that was giving up 27pts a game (you probably know that game for the infamous screenshot of Beamer celebrating while ESPN played that 0-0 score at the end of regulation) and that this year was the true end of the Virginia Tech Golden Years. Then they hired Fuente and that was all she wrote.
Watching this game live as a Buckeye fan, it felt like VA Tech went 37-37 on 3rd down

One of the only losses as a buckeye fan that im okay with happening. This loss motivated the team and J.T. Barrett to play better which ultimately led to us winning out and winning the championship

I was at the game. Big OSU fan, but that day the Hokies absolutely were the better team. OSU needed to grow up being somewhat inexperienced. Remember that the week before we barely beat Navy in Baltimore. I was surprised that Vtech seemed to fall apart after this. I thought the OSU win would propel them. I had a feeling Ohio State would wake up and become quite good, possibly even still winning the Big Ten title. No way did I think we would win the National Title.
I turned 21 that day and we traveled up there for it. Paid a fortune to sit behind a concrete slab. I only remember Bucky ballin and that Riley interception. We had a whole celebration in the front rows of that end zone best game of my life.
Great night to be a Hokie! Also OSU can look at this game as the kick in the arse they used to run the table and win the natty.

Virginia Tech won this game using a bear front (3 DL over the center and 2 guards) that OSU had no game plan for. Couple that with 4 new starting OL and a red shirt freshman QB making his second career start and you have a disaster.
You know, its actually kind of absurd how bad this year ended up being for the Hokies. They ended up dropping 4 of the next 6 games, giving us a massive meme in the "Frank Beamer celebrating a 0-0 tie" screenshot from the Wake Forest game (that they lost 3-0 against a team giving up 27 pts a game), they missed on a ton of recruits like Josh Sweat, Derek Nnandi, Jalen Dalton, a bunch of other dudes I don't entirely remember off the top of my head. Virginia Tech and terrible offense, name a more iconic combination. Seems like if they don't have a generational talent in the backfield like Michael Vick or at least a future pro player like Tyrod Taylor or Logan Thomas, Tech's offense was unstable at best and prone to being complete garbage at worst.

The guys on the other side had some pretty good players too: Hodges, Fuller, Stroman, Ford, Edmunds, Clark, Facyson, Teller, Slye. And As mentioned below: Bud Foster
The Hokies had alot of good players too, and one of the best DCs ever. But, like most promising VT teams in the 2010s, they were plagued by awful offensive playcalling (this was probably the one game that Scott Loeffler actually called a good game for) and underperformance. The last decade of Hokie football has been...tough to watch to say the least.

Great game as a VT fan. Funny how we were still bad that year, and OSU won the national title, so in retrospect, while exciting, this game ultimately meant nothing.

That's the story of VT for the last decade. As a Pitt fan who's team directly benefited from Tech's precipitous fall from grace, I'm sure you're aware of how much wasted talent there was on those Tech teams.
