There are about 500 species of squid, and they live in all the world’s oceans, making them a reliable food source for whales, dolphins, sharks, seabirds, fish - and even other squid. As a result, the squid's most extraordinary adaptations are those that have evolved to help them thwart these predators. Carly Anne York explains how these stealthy cephalopods have mastered deep sea survival.

TED-Ed wait, how do they fight with whales? It was never explained how could they protect themselves in an actual fight for survival.
TED-Ed Could you please do more cephalopods videos? Thanks, keep up the good work.
Camellia S. They explain it between 0:28-0:39.
Camellia S. Also, the video is titled "How squids outsmart their predators", so it was pretty clear the video wasn't about offensive strategies.
Álvaro Tirado Moreno yes, but how do Squids inflict this marks? Is it just pure pressure or some kind of venom involved?
And I never said it was a video practically about that. They mention it and I craved more information. Read my comment again.
I'm extremely disappointed that a group of squids isn't called a squad.
Nah... It's called an audience I think
actually, a group of virgins is called a squad, mainly 3 or 4 virgins
(I'm talking about fortnite)
According to Siri, a group of squids are called a squad.
lol
They are called a Splatoon
Meanwhile squidward is having a hard time dealing with a sponge and a starfish
EpicGamer425 The creators confirmed that Squidward is an octopus.
Cephalopods with 8 tentacles are smarter than those with 10, so, squidward is actually smarter than if he was actually a squid
I can name myself Dog and doesn't mean I'm a dog.

For some reason I find the way vampire squid hide behind their arms and webbing to be the cutest thing.
Like the kid logic of “if I can’t see them, then they can’t see me”
Lol
Modern squid tend to use hand-held artillery to defeat their enemies, and have developed jet-propulsion techniques to allow them to travel great distances through the air, even on land. Their cromatocells have also become highly adapted, resulting in what appears to be high fashion inspired among various cephalopods and even crustaceans.
What type of hand held artillery

My choice is rollers
How do they defend themselves? Splattershots obviously!
j00st00s yes.
i prefer rollers
I prefer rollers
j00st00s more of an Inkbrush cuttlefish
No offense
It's simple. They splat the predators with their Splattershots and Rollers.

i love the sheer amount of splatoon comments in this video lmao
If only inklings could be like those collosal squids.
They just ink their predators 'till they splat them.
The animation design on this was stunningly beautiful.
2:23 "Mr.Squidward, I don't feel so good"
The vampire squid is actually a kind of octopus (clade Octopoda) and the bobtail squid is in its own clade (Sepiolida) and more closely related to cuttlefish. They are all cephalopods though.
3:41 when the dolphin bites the decoy squid it makes the sound of a zombie getting hurt from minecraft lol
thats what i thought
YeS
The narration was so soothing that made this video more enjoyable:-) :-)👍👍👍👌👌
As much as I love seeing it here, the vampire squid isn't actually a squid. Squid fall under the order of Teuthida, whereas the vampire squid falls under the order of Vampyromorphida. A few additional facts:
-The anatomy of the vampire squid resembles that of the octopus, having eight arms with no tentacles to grab prey like squid
-The vampire squid is the last surviving member of it's family
-While squid and octopus hunt for live prey the vampire squid uses a filament to catch marine snow
(Sorry for the long comment, it's a bit much for six seconds out of a five minute video)
I like how not the only spaltoon fan here but can octopuses do the same as the squids with illusion ink
by turning into kids, duh

Squids are clearly far more interesting than I would have guessed. Thanks for sharing!
They'll better defend themselves in the future. They're gonna learn how to use guns, sniper rifles, nukes, jetpacks, homing bombs, and literally what feels like a tank.
Splatoon bois will understand :)
samurott 321 More likely they use chargers, blasters, buckets and brushes.

They turn from a kid to a squid and hide in ink to recharge their splattershots that they use to protect themselves
Lets add more Splatoon comments:
They defend themselves because they are X rank in all modes
Then why would whales get scars from squids if the squid just camouflage, squirt ink and jetpack away?
Because giant squids don't have any of those abilities
Colossal squids are weaponized because of their size
80% of the comments are about Splatoon.
I was expecting that

That's what happens when you make a video about squids
The funny thing is. Real life squids live in water but inklings die from it
Anyone else find it kind of cute how the squid was just hanging out with the scientists for the second half of the video?

This was beautifully animated and a real joy to watch.
Cool, fantastic and interesting as always
0:40 my worst nightmare would be to be at her place x)
squid are fascinated but the ocean is very scary for me
Don't worry, they don't indiscriminately eat things, they would probably study you, and think, is this really food?, and maybe then it would grab you, I mean cuttlefish can get used to human presence
Same ocean scary :(
@@fishyfishyfishy500akabs8 no, squids have the potential to be extremely deadly and dangerous, and it shouldnt take much for one to decide it's better to defend itself from you before waiting to see what you'll do
@ that is old me and yeah I wouldn't trust homboldt squid for instance
Never thought they were so fascinating.
You also forgot about bioluminescence on some deep-sea squid. Along with counter-shading, these squids glow at certain parts underneath their body to further elude to predators and to distract their prey as well.
