Mysterious world of the colossal squid

  • Descend deep into the dark, cold Southern Ocean and check out the mysterious world of the colossal squid.
The top of the ocean is light and warm, and abundant with life. But if you head down a kilometre or more, you'd be in the dark, cold ocean deep. More people have been into space than have gone down deep below the ocean surface, yet it's the largest habitat available for life on Earth.
The colossal squid, the most massive invertebrate on the planet, makes its home in these cold depths of the Southern Ocean.
You can view this video in 3D at the Colossal Squid exhibition in the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.

Its hard to imagine that somewhere in the deep, thousands, perhaps millions of colossal squid congregate, breed and live. The same for the giant. I read they believe sperm whales consume squid in the millions each year and yet we have rarely filmed them and never studied their habits. I'd love to have a sub that would allow me to go down into where e think they live and stay down for as long as it took. I wish we could attach cameras to sperm whales that could see in the dark and last for a few dives. I've seen a couple videos like that, but none could really see what was going on. Really fascinates me no end.😅

Your vignette segues directly into that authentic footage segment that was so widely disseminated a year or two back, so well, in fact, that the two together might form an even more powerful, seamless, whole, if stripped/pasted together. In any case, a great post and a fine work of cinematic art.

2:53 had me thinking what their top speed could be. We all know how fast smaller squids can move with their propulsion. If you scale it up for a 7 m creature with simular reflexes, the distance it should be able to cover in the blink of an eye should be crazy.

I thought that this would be important information to share, given the ocean-related nature of this clip. 35% of all ocean microplastics come from clothing/textiles, mostly polyester, but also acrylic and nylon as well. This is largely due to clothes made of these materials being washed, which causes these clothes to quickly erode, with the microplastic fibers entering the water system and eventually the sea. Ocean Hero is a great search engine that we can use to help clean up larger plastics before they disintegrate into microplastics.
