Nearly 350 species of fish have specialized anatomical structures that generate and detect electrical signals. Underwater, where light is scarce, electrical signals offer ways to communicate, navigate, find, and sometimes stun prey. But how do these fish produce electricity? And why? It’s my understanding that the spasms produced by the shock from an electric ray can be so violent that it’s not uncommon for the prey fish to actually break its own back.
That's also related to adrenaline in humans. Human muscles are much more powerful than their average use. Adrenaline "unlocks" the max capacity. This "unlocking" system is temporary because we can hurt ourselves in many ways, lol

In 1770s Human don't know about electricity and how to produce it.
Turns out that these fishes are one of the first electrical engineers of mother nature (who herself is one), being able to detect, analyse, and transmit changes in electric fields and signals respectively.. how incredible!
Yup, nature has many secrets and discovering them could potentially lead to many great advancements.
There's no such a thing as "mother nature". This fish for example is way too complicated, you can say it's well engineered, so there's The One who created it.
Humans are also mother nature's doing :D

I legit just figured electric eels was a play on words and it just had some sort of poison on its skin that caused a pain similar to a shock. I never actually figured they could produce true electricity. That is so insane

This is so helpful with me. I had wrongly known that the only fish that can create electricity is the electric eel before i watch this. This is so amazing !
I always assumed the “electric” part was just a misnomer, and the fish just secreted a stinging venom from its body. But no, it’s actually electricity!! Incredible!

I found a website that sells electric eels as pets.
It works like a capacitor.
The eel probably has a layer of cells around its body that can conduct electricity so it acts as a faraday cage for the fish,the electricity passes around the fish instead of through it.
I was taught that the eel's tail contains the potential gradient (anterior of tail = positive, posterior of tail = negative). All the eel's vital organs like its brain are at the front of the eel. When it 'powers up' to send shocks from its tail, it straightens out, and the current travels outward. You will see an eel sometimes bend in a U shape to avoid its head getting in the way of the current. If the current hit its brain, it would die. Electric eels can kill each other. In zoology they taught us that the pics of eels "biting & shocking prey simultaneously" are fake
@0:50 I know the fish by name:-) Gnathonemus petersii. Besides living in my aquarium, they live in Sewage treatment plant in Germany to test the water,cause they change voltage in Millivolt when water changes. And they are friendly :-)

You should update this video due to recent findings in Amazon's Jungle. New species of electric eel was found and it can discharge up to 950 volt. They named this eel as Electrophorus Voltai. Yay!!!

It's the amps (the amount of current) to worry about. The voltage only tells half the story, which is the potential. If the resistance is high, it will negate the voltage and thus reduce the amperage. Fortunately for humans, the electric eel only emits 1 amp over a quick instant, so it's not deadly to us.

You described the voltage of the fishes but not the amperage they produced. High voltage is nothing without amperage so it would've been nice to know that.
In the time since this video came out an even more powerful Electric Eel was discovered in the Amazon. Electrophorus voltai is apparently capable of emitting jolts up to 860 volts and 1 ampere in strength! That’s 860 watts of muscle numbing energy!
