It's surprising how many bird species that _aren't_ parrots (and their relations) can mimic different sounds, birdsongs and speech. Birds are blooming awesome creatures and much overlooked by most people. Having said that, this starling speaks a _lot_ more than I've ever heard any other doing!
They can mimic virtually anything. Really good at R2D2 impressions! If you live with one you have to be veeeery careful not to let your fire alarm stay low on batteries! 😆Or to let them know that any sounds annoy you really, because they'll do it for attention and neeeeever staaaahhp.

I have one who's 12 yrs old now. He talks and sings many things. He brings me and my family so much joy. Starlings are truly sweet and magical little birds.

I love starlings, their feathers are beautiful. Mimicry is amazing as I've heard them with telephone rings, emergency vehicle sirens - but not heard them speak. Amazing. We get a lot in winter and the murmurations are wonderful to see, but we don't get them in such great numbers, so we get little ones!
Are you sure this is a starling? The ones that are here where I live don't have white spots. They have a blue and green irredesance on their feathers that is beautiful. But they can't talk either. OR they weren't caught or found when they were babies. So maybe they just didn't have enough time or trust to learn how to talk. 🤷♀️

Unlike starlings, the common grackle is a bird native to the US. I live in the Midwest, and I see big flocks of grackles in the spring, when they move up north.
@hamsterama Yeah I looked them up. Well either way, the grackle is a plague. They are here in southern Indiana all summer long. They will steal other birds nests and even kick out the eggs of other birds to get it. The birds fight on my big maple tree the whole time. I would like for them to go up against our Bluejays. They're huge. And mean. They will woop ass on anything that comes close to their nest. Humans, dogs, cats, snakes. I'll put it this way....even I run from them. LMAO 🤣.

Starlings are good at mimic whatever sounds they commonly hear around them and use those sounds while singing. I was somewhat surprised when I grew one starling chick and found out he would never sing like "normal" starlings do. That said, in the springtime we get "lost" roosters, sheep, phones, chainsaws, hammers etc up in the trees ;-) I've also had couple of tits who learned to sing my curse words. Not good when they think those are good for greeting quests, loud and clear...

Really nice to see that this young woman had the sense to do a little research, specifically about imprinting. I see so many of these videos where the wild birds become totally imprinted, and yet the people feel that they "belong in the wild." Well meaning people to be sure, but imprinted birds or mammals that have become completely tame are never candidates for release back into the wild.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart kept a starling! He loved it, composed music & poems about its delightful singing and even gave it a rather elaborate funeral 💔

I read a large article about Starlings a few years back. In Canada where l live, they’d gotten a bad rap. They were seen as aggressive, scaring other species away and wreaking havoc with commercial grapes. They are not indigenous to North America. They were brought over from England. Many centuries ago ( l believe in medieval times) starlings were kept in cages. They sing beautifully and that is why they were so popular. Starlings can actually sing two parts to a melody as they have sort of what you think of as two throats. In other words they harmonize with themselves. Interestingly, they are no more a menace to grape crops than our beloved Robins!

Lost my mum, and i asked her to send me birds. All the way home, my son and i had special encounters with birds, and when i arrived back home 2 days later, my bird rescue was flooded with orphaned babies. My conure died 3w later, and I was so devastated, as he was such comfort in those weeks. Now i have my heart bird, a mini-macaw. Poko reminds me of her. So gentle and adorable, but the holes in clothes....lol...i understand. What a beautiful story these 2 share ❤. Thank you, lovely lady, for saving this precious soul 💖
My mom sent 2 cardinals, then 2 butterflies, and finally hummingbirds the day of her funeral. We had never seen hummingbirds on our property in the 56 years we had lived there!

I'm so glad i had such a kind and empathetic role model. She was my champion and encouraged me I'm so many ways. She loved that I was a punk drummer, then a sword swallower. She helped get me gigs (as opposed to my dad who refuses to acknowledge that what I do is a legitimate job, despite it taking me around the world 4 times!). I feel blessed to have had such an incredible mother. She had 7... yes SEVEN miscarriages between my sister and me, and I was the final try before they gave up. I just adore my mum, and her incredible philanthropic, adventurer parents, my Nana and Papa. I miss them all every day ❤️. Thank you for your comment!

I was out today enjoying a chilly Canadian morning listening to the beautiful musical calls of a flock of starlings just like Poko. They're marvellous birds.
This made me cry with tears of happiness. There is so much we don't know and I too believe this sweet little soul was sent to you by your beloved mother to remind you how much she loves you. God bless you for saving him and loving him.... Wish everybody in the world was like you and treated animals in the same way.

This is absolutely insane! 😢😮 it's funny and emotional at once. It's amazing that this bird can talk but the fact that it showed up in her life shortly after her Mom passed away and now won't leave and the things that it says to her is simply miraculous. I was out today enjoying a chilly Canadian morning listening to the beautiful musical calls of a flock of starlings just like Poko. They're marvellous birds.
This made me cry with tears of happiness. There is so much we don't know and I too believe this sweet little soul was sent to you by your beloved mother to remind you how much she loves you. God bless you for saving him and loving him.... Wish everybody in the world was like you and treated animals in the same way.

This is absolutely insane! 😢😮 it's funny and emotional at once. It's amazing that this bird can talk but the fact that it showed up in her life shortly after her Mom passed away and now won't leave and the things that it says to her is simply miraculous. And I agree that her Mother is without a doubt behind this beautiful and loving bird. ❤
