    Other
    The manufacture of a stone ax including the handle from using only primitive tools and materials. It is a celt (pronounced "salt") a type of ax with a polished stone head wedged into a hole or mortise at the end of a wooden handle (not to be confused with a "Kelt" referring to a Celtic person). The head took about a week and a day to make as I chose to make it from a particularly large piece of basalt. The hammer stone used to shape the basalt was of quartz. This involved hammering, pecking, grinding, and polishing the head into the final shape. The handle took a day and a morning to make. A chisel was made from stone and a mallet made from a log. These were used to cut the tree for the handle and shape it once down. The fire was used to harden the wood and also to help shape the mortise. The ax was then used to cut down a tree the day after the handle was a tree itself. It is a more efficient tool for felling trees than the hand ax I made and at the time of uploading this video has cut down 4 trees which I will use later. Because this stone ax is blunter than a steel one, the blade needs to hit the tree at angles greater than 45 degrees- otherwise, the blade would glance off. So celts were used more like wedges than modern axes.

    That large axe is a beast! Sometimes when you see the smaller axes you can’t help but think: “stone tools are so ineffective, it’s a wonder our ancestors did anything with them”, but when I saw that large axe chopping (even though it was through soft palm) it totally flipped my preconceived thoughts about the effectiveness of stone age tools. Very well done, and amazingly impressive!

    One thing I noticed about this build never put a wooden wedge on the side of the axe head because repeated strike can split the handle and please use a hard wood and a good river stone that way you'll have a durable tool that'll last longer.

      Dude you can see that the axe actually did some decent damage, even if they used a normal axe to make cutting down the tree easier, it would still dig through the tree easily, they might have just used an axe speed up the process of cutting down the tree

    It's a good thing your chopping wood made out of mostly water, what if the only wood available was maple or walnut or cherry or ash then what? Could you show us how to make one then. Survival is not about being in the perfect location for wood and stones and good weather.

    It would've been a better move if you sharpened the head first before attaching it tho..

    How long would the sharpening process take? would it depend on the type of rock?

    • @leakages1827
      @leakages1827 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      depends on what type of rock your sharpening stone is, you have to make sure the type of rock you're sharpening is stronger than the sharpening stone
