I will never forget the first time I used a cast iron pot at someones house and then washed it in the dish washer. They were quite upset with me. Now I have a cast iron pot I use almost daily and take very good care of it. Your method is pretty much mine too. Something people need to know
Great vid. That's the same way I clean mine, except I go to the extra chore of cleaning the outside. I do that because I keep my cast iron on display in the house. When people ask me how I clean my cast, I just say "boil it & oil it."
Sometimes if its quite stuck on I throw some wood ashes in the water that I'm boiling and the mild lye that is formed helps soften up the food even more. Then just rinse good afterwards.
Give you a suggestion, method I use after cooking, keep pot, oven or skillet hot, have water boiling in separate pot, pour the boiling water into hot cast iron, will steam everything out and break it down, will still need to scrape in certain situations but will save you a step! Keep it seasoned as you did and all is good. Might give olive oil a try if you plan on storing between long periods without use as it doesn’t become rancid after sitting for days! Really enjoy your videos brother, nice work! Take care and be safe!
Excellent video brotha! I do almost the exact same thing... I use olive oil and at the end I put it back in the heat one last time to season. Thank you for sharing!
You have an endless stream of tips and they are all great and easy to understand. Looking forward to joining one of your many classes this spring or summer. Thanks Dan………..Ed
Boiling water is tough on seasoning. Be sure you have a well used D.O. before you do this. My experience with boiling water in cast iron with a young seasoning has shown it lifting with the task creating quite a mess. This is great if you also burned the hell out of something in a D.O.
Hey Coalcracker. I went on my first Bushcraft forums meetup February 2017 in TN and some of the older folks suggested citrus. Just heat up some OJ and it will clean it up. Thanks for the vids.
All you did is boil off the seasoning and lube it. Get cast iron and separate water to same temp. just pour water into pan and steam clean it then lightly, oil it rubbing till most residue is removed heat up then cool.
Well sir, scrap and wipe out cast then pour hot water in it and scrub , rinse out with hot water wipe out with lint free cloth and put on fire until top edges are warm to touch then season with extra virgin olive oil or flax seed oil, the cloth should be lint free, you can scrap out side and wipe down with vegetable oil, I have cast iron from 1800's and no rust or pits.JMO.........ATB!
I can't remember where, but I heard that tomatoes and BBQ sauces because of their acid content can screw up the seasoning of the cast iron? And would it be appropriate to use a bristle brush when cleaning? ( Not metal ) Thanks in advance ATB from Yellowknife
Nice vid, already do this minus making my own scraper lol!! I have a couple questions about rehandling an axe if there's anyway we could correspond on that, that would be great!!
Great video & simple instruction.. Always funny on TH-cam, there's always one dislike on even excellent videos lol..could be a key to eternal life & still get that one dislike.. 'shakes head'!
Brian Mincher - the salt can cause it to rust. I have a griddle that I washed and seasoned with bacon grease. Put it away for the winter and the next camping season, it was covered in rust.
You can also take a sizable greenstick and beat the end with a rock to fray it and use it as a scrubbie.

Good stuff. It's important to note that no soap or detergent was used.
Good vid, Dan. Shows how easy it can be to take care of cast iron for those who might want to get some but are hesitant.
Love that you don't clean outside. I always got "lip" for not cleaning outside. (ALSO, was the only one that never had rust on outside! )
Learned about you from your vid with JS Townsend and instantly subscribed. Excellent channel! Thanks for the high quality vids.
Love that you showed this (assuming your post chili cook)!!!

Great video! Just what I was looking for. I use cast iron in the home everyday but wanted to see about using over a campfire and how to clean it.

Are these worth carrying considering how heavy they are compared to thinner steel/aluminum/titanium pots?

Hey Dan, does the vegetable oil ever get rancid in between uses?
Dan, what size is your Dutch Oven ??

Thanks once again for the useful working tip. ATB
Dan if I didn't have any oil handy would birch oil work?
Nice vid, already do this minus making my own scraper lol!! I have a couple questions about rehandling an axe if there's anyway we could correspond on that, that would be great!!
I did a video on handling axes a few months back
have you looked into the chainmail scrubbers?
Rob Slagle I've got one and its great. Don't think I would want to pack it though.
Freaks my husband out that I don't use soap on my cast iron pans. I pack a fingernail/veggie brush. Small and has been handy for multiple things.
good job
Take some tall grass straw tie it like a brush mini broom cleans off dirt food .
Snow like sand can be a good abrasive.
save coffee grounds.. works for me
That's how I do it except that I carry a green scrubbie sponge to scrub with.
Great video & simple instruction..

Yes always one or ten. Hahah
Haters gotta hate that's the only thing they got.
snow clumps and solidifies grease.
Save ur bacon grease to use in the final step.
Rummy's World - Only concern there is the salt content.
Outdoor Dauber what concern, exactly, does the salt cause?
Brian Mincher - the salt can cause it to rust. I have a griddle that I washed and seasoned with bacon grease. Put it away for the winter and the next camping season, it was covered in rust.
Yeah for long term I woul use lard. I cook with my cat iron every day.
Outdoor Dauber gotcha. Thx. I didn’t realize that would be an issue.
Did you eat all that chili??
I was wondering the same thing. lol
Second time around, would be good if you are packaging the pot away for awhile. Definitely dry and oil, always, as shown!
All you people crack me up man I've been clean a cast iron since I was a child especially in the woods take some dirt and Coldwater done
Yes it all good till you get home and the wife washes it with SOAP. Ever seen a 50 year old man cry over a pot.
You should have drank some of the water not throw it away. Good calories wasted.
This is the easy way? Sheesh
