  • This short but revealing colour film features the former Spion Kop at Bloomfield Road from the early 1970's. The camera follows the familiar route supporters would take along the car park through the turnstiles then up the steps before walking out onto the back of the Kop and down the terracing. What is strikingly captured in this film and unlike on photographs of the time is when it pans around and the actual sheer size of that terracing stretching out from under the roof. Yes there were bigger Spion Kops but this one was ours. A great walk down memory lane for those of us who recall standing there to watch the Seasiders and before the segregation fences were put up and later the removal of the entire roof.
The original film has been slowed down, to view at normal speed select x2 but why would you? just enjoy it!

That place was a part of my growing up. From sitting by the goal on the wall in '69 to the taking off the roof and our exodus t'scratching shed. Happy, sad and occasionally scary times but always exhilarating!

Priceless document of the old Bloomfield Road. The clip was featured in the BBC's Blackpool on Film programme but do not know where it comes from originally or who the man is.

It's a shame that the camera did not pan out to show the entire Kop.
It always looked impressive on TV.

Roof should have covered the whole kop and should have been just for pool fans ,that feeling entering the back of the kop and seeing the green base of a pitch plus the smell of cigars Happy days

From what I have read somewhere. When the roof was originally added to the existing Kop. It could not extend the whole length because it would have effectively blocked out the floodlights. If you view from 1.32 onwards you can see the legs of the floodlight tower set back and the roof line. It is the only reason I've ever come across as to why the roof did not cover the full terrace.

My first game v Bristol City 2-0 win. Alan Suddick &Alan Skirton got the goals. The Kop could be a lively place saw a Blackburn fan arrested because he had a fairy liquid bottle full of Ammonia under a top hat and was squirring it about. Games against Bolton,Preston and Burnley were always "atmospheric " 🤣

Wow so many memories my Dad took me to most home games throughout the 60’s and we always stood in the cop with one exception when Man Utd took over the whole of the cop and the police wouldn’t let us in much to my Dads disgust, that’s probably why I can’t stand Utd.

Not 1978, not if it was Southampton. The last game in 1978 is engraved on my heart. It was away at Brighton - we lost 2-1 but it didn't seem to matter, because we were safe from the drop, weren't we? Not quite mathematically safe, and it all went horribly wrong, and we spent the next 29 years in the bottom two divisions.
