      I think what they need to nail is the vibe, the films suffer from being turned from a really creative series to something that feels like generic middle school fiction chosen one and all.
      It’s okay for it to be a little silly, it’s okay to use bright colors and honestly doing something a bit Tom Holland Spider-Man like would fit the series really well in my opinion. I can totally picture slow motion battles with sarcastic Percy commentary and punk and pop music during some scenes.

    The worst part of this movie as a fan of the books is how it basically just stole the climax of the 4th book, crammed it into this film, and then quickly resolved it. That would be like if Marvel put Thanos in Avengers 2, only gave him 10 minutes tops of screentime, then killed him off forever.

      The thing is that the second book isn't as good individually, but Percy Jackson really is a series where the sum of their parts is greater than any individual book. The books are really good, but the first two books really do a great job of building up to the final three (same with the Heroes of Olympus), which I why I would've recommended reading all of them before watching the second one, because it'll leave you wondering where they were trying to go after the second movie. Also books 5, 4, and 3 are probably the best written books of the series (in the order)

      Honestly there seems to be no real direction they were trying to take with the sea of monsters. At some points it seemed like they were expecting to get a sequel even though they used crucial plot points from the books that weren’t even close to coming to fruition yet and sometimes it seemed like they knew that the franchise wouldn’t continue by speeding up those plot points to bring the short lived franchise to an end with a neat little bow on top EVEN THOUGH they left it open for continuation. If they actually got the green light for another movie where would they have even taken the source material? They already used up and butchered major plots. The next few movies would basically just be completely different from the source material all together.

    • @narufan987

      I guess in the event that they had decided to continue the franchise (for some reason), they could've revived him again.

    WARNING: SPOILERS FOR PERCY JACKSON
    i think that the captain of midnights should have read all the books before making his evaluation. I've read them all, and, well, this movie is terrible on so many levels. Luke not being the one to stop Kronos is just stupid and completely goes against the message, that Luke was the hero in the end. it's just annoying.

    • @insanelytomato4177
      @insanelytomato4177 3 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      @@x0xgregx0x Yes this exactly! The way the characters are all dismissed off the bat by being just "Rick Riordan" characters and how they're far too simple to get wrong even though the movie was doing just that made me a little sad to hear. I absolutely adored these books growing up and recently re-read all of them alongside my sister, who at this point is pursuing grad school. We both thoroughly enjoyed going through the series again and re-experiencing our love for it. They might not be all that complex in the beginning, but captainmidnight even admits that the characters in the movies are wayyy too aged up and the ones in the books are still very, very young teenagers.
      Take Harry Potter for example here, the protags are young in both book and movie and they make childish descicions because they're, well, children and that's to be expected but they're not blamed for being children or chalked up to being inherently incomplex characters just because they're written like teenagers. And they do become more complex over time as both they and the audience that read/watched them grew up. It just seems unfair that these "Rick Riordan" characters are given such treatement because I remember and love the books so fondly; to hear them dismissed so completely in passing like that... hurts.

    I saw a clip from this movie in a university cafeteria once, specifically the scene where Percy demonstrates his exceptional navigational abilities on water for the first time, represented in the film by latitude and longitude lines overlaid on the water, and thought, "Huh, that's a clever way to visually represent for the audience his supernatural ability to know exactly where in the world he is as long as he's on or near the ocean. Good job, movie, you did something well."
    Then he explained it as something he was literally seeing and completely ruined what little respect I had for the scene.

  • @aurrickan
    @aurrickan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    one of the things that riordan does well is character descriptions. everyone has some idea of how the characters are supposed to look. i think the reason why people were annoyed with daddario's brown hair in the first film was because annabeth's hair is so iconic to her character, because of riordan's skill at establishing that. this movie really doesn't do clarisse well visually, they took a character who was more buff and stocky and made her skinny. it's a small nitpick bit still a big difference in characterization

    “Can’t handle the complexity of Rick riordan characters.” He writes better and deeper characters than a majority of authors. Sure they aren’t insanely complex to where you need a phd to understand but they’re complex enough to where if you come back and read the books later in life you’ll realize a lot of things about those characters that you didn’t before simply because you were too young.

    The most atrocious thing that this movie did was have Kronos Luke. That messes up his entire character arc. Luke thinks that the titans will treat him better than the gods do, which is why he spends most of the series trying to free Kronos. If the very first thing that Kronos does when partially freed is to try to Luke, why would Luke keep trying to free him?
    The second worst thing that the movie did was make Clarisse hot. It took someone who was supposed to be an ugly jerk and turned her into a thirst trap 😅

    I hope you finish the book series on your own, it's definitely worth it! In my opinion The Sea of Monsters is the weaker book of the five and the series just continued to get better from there, at least for me. This movie doesn't do much justice for the source material and tries to cram bits and pieces of the other books into the end. (this is probably because they knew they would not be doing all five books lol) Anyway, I hope you continue the PJO series and I hope Disney+ does a better job (fingers crossed!)

    It's a bit of an unpopular opinion, but I kind of liked this movie better than the first? And I also liked the second book better than the first? Idk, I'm just a sucker for these Odyssey-type storylines. I didn't particularly enjoy the Narnia books, but Voyage of the Dawn reader was my absolute favorite out of all of them. Also, it's kind of hard for me to compare the books within the series because I switched from reading in translation to reading the original after Book 2. Unfortunately, the translation in my language wasn't very good, and since then I generally find Riordan's books more enjoyable and funny in English.

    Well yeah, it’s pretty evident why it’s the death. They didn’t even put the main antagonist into the first movie and they skipped 3 books in order to revive and kill Kronos in the second movie. They cut a bunch of stuff out of each movie in order to fit the run time which I can get for some parts but they really screwed themselves with that first movie. That one was an awful adaptation. They skipped the fates cutting the yarn. They did capture the flag wrong. They skipped the fury’s on the bus. They skipped the arch. They skipped the diner and the water park. They skipped crusty’s mattresses. They added a fight against the hydra for some reason despite that not happening until the second book. They dragged the lotus casino on longer than they should’ve. Skipped Kronos trying to pull Percy into Tartarus. Skipped the Ares fight. Literally the climax of the story. Skipped the part where the helm of darkness was stolen. They added Persephone into the story for some reason but left out everything to do with Dionysus and ares. Clarrise wasn’t even in the movie. Annabeths hair was black. Like, they did almost nothing right about first movies adaptation. The second one was also just as awful but I don’t feel like writing a comment on pretty much every point in the movie.
