This and GRIS have been my Games of the Year. I got this yesterday with the Christmas money my dad gave me, and after completing the game, I didn’t know what to think about it. I sat for a few seconds going “what? *that’s* the ending?” But after thinking about it a little harder... I appreciate it. As someone who’s still recovering from trauma, this game really spoke to me. But before I go into as to why, I’m gonna speak about the game itself for a second!
I was always a sucker for “2D + 3D in one” games and this one was no exception. While there were moments that made me scratch my head, it wasn’t enough to make me rage quit, and I love that. Honestly, I believe that there should be more games that use the rewind mechanic, rather than a simple game over that prompts you to start over and over again. Oh, and don’t get me started on the music *and* the art style. As someone who wants to make a game one day, and a musical nerd, this game was both ear and eye candy. I don’t know if the creators worked on anything else, but if they did, I’m *definitely* checking it out.
On a personal note, I definitely related to the girl and her shadow, in which I saw my younger self in the girl, and my present self (and maybe future self) in the shadow-hell, I even saw the girl and the shadow as my mother and I, especially during the scene where they began to drift apart, only to come to terms once more. In fact, there were moments were I started to tear up, because WOW, the dialogue really spoke to me. The naivety yet stubbornness of the little girl with the ambitious nature and motherly-ness of the shadow made such a pleasant combo to experience, and the voice acting only made it better.
Like you, I’m so sad that it’s so short! And while I love the fact that you can piece the story together yourself, I wish they gave us a bit more reasoning behind the girl’s fear of the light. I mentioned that I didn’t like the ending of this game at first, but looking back at it now, it fits with the narrative. Just because it’s an ambiguous story, doesn’t mean that the ending has to be clear. If you think about it... it’s just like trauma and mental health. Unlike GRIS in which the protagonist moves on from her grief, it’s ultimately up to the player to decide whether it’s a happy ending or not. While yes, it was a bit rushed, I can say that in my opinion, the ending showcases the girl slowly but surely accepting the light once more (kind of like if one had a bad memory associated with music or other forms of media, they can return to it any time they feel like they can).
At the end, believe that this a beautiful game, and I’m definitely going back to get all of the origami birds and get all of the trophies. Overall rating is a 10/10! You can get it on the PS4 for around $5, which honestly a good price for something as amazing as Shady Part of Me.

@@IndieLad GRIS is such a beautiful game with both the message and art style. It has no dialogue in it which makes the story even better IMO. You should definitely check it out ^^

I downloaded this yesterday on Christmas! It reminds me a little of this game I bought years ago on PS3 called Rain.. Strangely that ones been in my backlog for ages but I’m just getting into it now..
I kinda like this artsy genre whether it’s Journey, Little Nightmares, Nihilumbra, Ico or Gris.. There’s been quite a few over the years..

The art and the story are definitely the stong points of this game. It's a 10/10 and I'm willing to fight anyone who says otherwise

@@marcosmartinezwagner8505 This is exactly correct lol i played for one night with headphones on. reading the story etc and thought it wasn't very compelling so just stopped playing with the volume altogether and didn't read the story. I'm definitely a classic literature and sci fi nerd, quite well read and can appreciate a good story. This one just didn't do it for me. I also felt the puzzles were mediocre at best. This is also coming off playing Limbo for three nights completely enthralled by the atmosphere and difficulty. Best $1 i spent on steam. Shady was okay, no regrets but i couldnt recommend it myself

I wish they would just keep making phiscal release copy of games it's sad that don't real gamers like real copys of games and they don't like digital

Yeah man i love having disks for single player games, its really fun watching the collection grow!

I’m a physical copy person but I gave up that hard stance when music went digital and half my CD collection was stolen from my Jeep. But honestly, do we really miss changing 100 CDs everytime I wanna switch artists? Of course there are downsides but digital downloaded games are instantly available along with many other pros… don’t fight it, the worlds moving digital and game companies re happy to do so as it’s earns them a better profit from no used game sales alone
