Female spiders usually eat the male spider.
In some species of spiders, the male will actually tie up the female in his own silk during mating, to immobilize her - to keep her from attacking him I guess - so sometimes, maybe not always, but sometimes the males will have fun. LOL
These are lace weaver spiders and as spiders go these spiders are lovely. For a start they are very different from other house spiders, for instance, they are social spiders so live in nests of quite a few other lace weavers. The females massively outnumber the males anything from 3-10 to 1 male, probably because of this habit of the mother dying to feed their offspring. The males and females have distinctly different abdominal markings. The males also have a slimmer abdomen. In this species of spider the female generally doesn't eat the male - although rarely mistakes happen.
I know all of this because a few years ago, i was replacing a blocked up vent in a room, and i disturbed an entire nest of females, and for a few months they were all over the house, must have found about 10, i keep finding them now to this day. The web was thick, blue and soft like the finest, softest silk you could possibly imagine, so soft you weren't sure if you were touching it. Initially i put them outside, but after a while i learnt that they are very good spiders to have. Although they do have a bite, and it will hurt (a bit like a wasp sting), they aren't fast, and they spend all their time trying to avoid people, and hide in the dark where they wont be disturbed. They are very shy, and even when scared they don't run around like maniacs.
I don't put them out anymore, other spiders i put out, but these spiders are beautiful up close. Also they wont survive outside. I just moved a male from my shower to my living room, behind a wardrobe. If you have any spider at all in your house, these are the spiders to have because they spend their entire time trying to avoid you, and the communes live below the floorboards eating all the bugs that might damage your property.
They are almost entirely nocturnal, but their latin name means they hang out near windows - a contradiction since they don't like the light. I've never seen them by windows. There are several types of lace weaver, very occasionally i see a black lace weavers, these are the ones most famous for sacrificing themselves for young. They also lay trophic eggs to feed their young, essentially small food parcels of unfertilised eggs. All types of lace weavers have "highly developed subsocial organizations".
These are not your normal scary spiders.
Another mother than feeds herself to her young is the octopus.

I never kill the cellar spiders that like to hang out around the radiators. It’s the spiders that hunt and crawl around that terrify me. Also depends on how big they are. Cellar spiders are very small and skinny. I still don’t kill the big ones; I just put ’em outside.
Where I'm from, there are 3 types of spider we can find inside the house.
- Some tiny jumping spiders than do not exceed 2 cm in length (legs included).
- A kind of spider I don't really know the name but have a very small body (smaller than our jupming spiders) with very long and thin legs living on webs behind furnitures or in the corners of the rooms.
- And a big kind of huntsman spider than can reach 12 cm in length with their legs, and this one is the stuff of nightmare. It is so fast and scary, but actually useful, since they eat cockroaches, and their bite is completely not lethal, just very painful.

For anyone wondering. This spider is called a Lace Weaver (specifically Black lacw weaver ft in the video) they are one of only a few species of spiders that actually eat their own mother. Not all spiders do this :)

This is the point where I want to see the genes in action. Like up to this point, that spider had a survive at all costs instinct. What triggers that to end and for her to deliberately agitate the babies? A pheromone they give off? And what about the babies? Does she release a pheromone when rustling the nest? So freaking cool.

All insects lack the proper neurological components in the brain to feel pain, so she's not "feeling" anything really. That's why a lot of insects have such brutal mating methods and such; they can't feel emotion. They aren't afraid, they don't feel pain, they're only driven by instinct and reflex.

y'know, i always heard that having babies would decrease your happiness, standard of living, if you will... but this, now this, is a whole different level.
Who told you that? If say 90% of the parents I know of says that having kids increase your happiness. The other 10% is total failures and shouldn't have kids in the first place

Either the dad got eaten by the mom, after they mated, or he ran off after that. Since, almost every single male is eaten after mating. The population of male spiders, may not be as much as female spiders. So, if he ran off, it’s best he mated with another female...
