A great drummer can make the non drummers appreciate the drumming quality. A master can make great drummers appreciate the drumming quality. Ash is a master, and it shows on the faces of the greats in that room. As well as the musicians in ghost note.
that guy at the end in the Zildjian shirt that is in several other live videos is actor and musician Mark Sheppard. Drummer for several bands in the UK and also known for playing Crowley the king of hell in the tv series Supernatural. I know this because he was my favorite character on that show 😅
I understand the musicality of his playing, I understand the depth of his pocket, I understand the sympathy to the other musicians, I understand the role he plays, and is comfortable playing...support, support, support. But for me the best part of this whole song is the sheer happiness that he shows in his playing. The smile, the happiness, the pure joy is both glorious to see and infectious in it's grooviness. Well done Mr. Rooney for your reaction, well done Mr. Soan for playing the music and playing for the music rather than for your own ego.
When u see Stink Faces within the first seconds of a live performance.. U know its going to be Good.. Ash Soen was all smiles, but what's Not to smile about when u are making other people happy with your skill to entertain.. Top Notch choice Andy for picking Ash to React to.
Thanks Andrew. I loved the way Ash creates tension and anticipation with rests and a syncopated notes. I think a lot of young drummers get swept up in chops side of playing. They are so blown away by super drummers playing insane flurries of notes, inhuman coordinated independence on huge drum kits that evoke mega-construction projects in their sheer size, scope and complexity of set-up, that they (the young drummers) miss the fact that it's playing pocket that makes up most of a working drummer's career; that if you want to be in demand as a session player, you need to be able to support the music and the other musicians with a rock solid groove. I'm nowhere near the level of cats like Ash Soan, but the times where I got the most compliments on my playing were those where I just played pocket grooves. As I was being complimented, I would be thinking: "But I didn't do anything special, man. Nothing flashy in the least." It made me realize that it's when the music feels good that people are the most moved; when they enjoyed it the most, whether they were in the audience or on the bandstand. Thanks again, Andrew, for such an important lesson. You are doing a great service to the drumming community and I want you to know I appreciate it. I wish I had taken lessons from someone like you when I started playing. It would have made a huge difference. But I guess I'll settle for enjoying the lessons now.
Fantastic comments Jake. And thanks for the kind comments. Most drummers will never truly feel and understand that. The basics are what you need. Chops and speed are the candy (and necessary for some styles). To be a working career drummer as a JOB... pocket and fundamentals 100%
Non-drummer here. He sounds like a "perfect" studio drummer to me. He is so "perfect" and constrained he never calls attention to himself. I can't hear "his" sound. Not sure that is always a good thing. Gavin Harris finds a way to have a signature without adding extra notes or overplaying. Carter Beauford, Larnell Lewis or even Nate Smith. Different animals but to me, more interesting "pocket" drummers to listen to. In my mind, the best drummers have a sound that separates them from the crowd.
ash soan's pocket is def very very very conventional and very commercial, his time is spot on and very deep in the pocket. But as a drummer i can tell you one thing, there's def style and very slight subtle nuances that any sound guy can tell and capitalize upon. I can also tell you playing with a drummer like Ash Soan is a band's dream, especially when the song has lyrics. Which he does record a lot for. For this context of song, with vocals and super duper composed horn parts, the drums here fit the context of the song to a T.
The fan that you were asking about at the end of the video I believe is the actor Mark Sheppard. I only know him from the television show Supernatural but I believe he has been in many other shows. He was also congratulating Gergo Borlai at the end of his performance. I believe he is also a drummer so that makes some sense.
Hi Andrew, I absolutely love your channel. I would like to request a video of your opinion about The Drummer from the Band SixxAm, Preferably from their album, Prayers For The Damned. The title track would be Awesome. I think this guy is of hell of a Drummer,But I would really love to hear your opinion if He is as Awesome as what my sounds to my ears as a really underrated Drummer. Thanks Andrew..
Like alot of people who nerd out on music I'm always wowed by the more extreme side of things when it comes to how the instruments are being played. However, I'm old enough to appreciate how effective a "less is more" approach can potentially be. CLUTCH is the band that opened my eyes to that probably more so than any other band. Check em out, their drummer is a wizard. Anyways, point being that drummers like this is the guy most bands are looking to hire because at the end of the day it's your job to keep time, to play to the music, and to add a colorful flourish when needed. This is the drummer who gets the gig.
Very impressive! Like all the Zildjian-Video‘s! Don‘t you wanna try a Zildjian-Live-Special!? Could be very long but i think nobody could get enough!!!
Baard in Leprous plays that speed in a halftime shuffle in Illuminate (there is a drum play video for it), and does some amazing stuff with his feet inside it.
Thank you good sir for introducing me to another KickASS musician. So amazing - now I’ll have to google the crap outta his name and find more live performances AND I got a great excuse to show this to my son that plays sax to get him to try out for high school jazz band.
Hey Andrew I love your reaction vids! Especially the ones you pick ✌️ I’m still waiting for the day I hear you say yippee ki yay mother fucker and dress up like Bruce Willis tho haha! If you get time you should check out KJ Sawka. He used to drum for Pendulum and has a sick hybrid acoustic/electric kit! Absolutely shells it too! Hope you’re doing well mate :)
It's hard to not over play in a huge groove like this. As a bass player I often stay out of the way but I am guilty of throwing some crazy run in sometimes. Often it works but sometimes less is more.
Andrew this is torture man! I can't just listen to the drums when there's a whole bunch of talented musicians playing . And Huggy Bear(starsky and hutch ) on vocals ...man , information overload ! Peace and love brother 👍🏻☮❤
I know I'm going to get tons of hate for this, but I was pretty underwhelmed by the performance. Of course he supports the music perfectly, but these are presumably supposed to be drummer features and I feel like he was overshadowed in that context. I feel like Stanton Moore did a much better job of commanding the pocket and also giving us a little more to chew on.
I feel like that’s just as good though. It’s no Larnell Lewis or Stanton Moore performance, but shows how to PERFECTLY drive the band like any perfect drummer should.
Stanton Moore's Performance was one of the best, Borlai also killing it.. and in 20years, Larnell has the same status like Gadd or Weckl.. he's just phenomenal 🔝🥁
You can only leave that much space when you have a caliber of bandmates he was playing with. Everyone in the session has to be in communication and expect or anticipate that Ash is going to step out of the bar line at any time. If the band just kept playing, it would have been a train wreck
I would love to see you do a reaction video to Mudvayne - Not Falling. There's not really any good live versions but the revised music video focuses on the drummer a lot. I saw them in concert many years ago and was close to the stage. There drummer is ridiculous.
I know you already know him because of your cover of Under The Bridge, but I'm amazed no one has requested him yet. One of the most pocket drummers I can think of is Chad Smith from Red Hot Chili Peppers. Please consider reacting to this amazing live performance of Can't Stop: th-cam.com/video/mc58QjI6vDc/w-d-xo.html
Love your reactions dude. Been watching your stuff here and there when I see a recommended. Are you aware of Eric Moore. You should see his drum video for a song called 'Burning' over on the DRUMMERWORLD channel. Absolutely insane.
I'm beginning to think the whole Zildjian Live setup is just a scam to farm "stank face" reactions for the internet. It's like a rule or somethin! Btw, does that bassist have a sock over the head of his guitar?

Ash! And he's absolutely killing it with Tori Amos in 2023!

He's playing like Porcaro, exactly what this song needs. No overplaying, just impecable tasty grooves
Bobby Caldwell mate. The song Buzzard from the group Armageddon.

I've watched this multiple times
Love Ash Soan! Fantastic feel.
Yes Scott!
Groovy halftime shuffle 😍😍😍😍 Love your channel brother
A Good Day to Drum Hard
Was at college with Ash in the late 80s . We were both drummers and students on a course in popular music and recording
Oh wow!
How was he regarded back then!? Already a legend?
Thanks Andrew.

To be in that room.

Definitely elevated that with insane pocket and hitting those accents on time. Just flowing smooth

Love Ash Soan, and this performance was so fun!
React to Tony Taylor Jr - Terminator
Please please please do a Video of Zildjian-Live - Stanton Moore!!!! Amazing Headroom and creativity!!!

Tight, and nice feel. He’s drumming sunshine on a cloudy day. He reminds me of Stevie Wonder, who is a great drummer. Very composed, and fun!

Lucky enough to see Ash live and meet him. One of those players that just sounds like a faultless studio edit. Crazy talent and hard worker 👍
I'd love to experience this level of pocket live. Absolute machine

So fine! Like a Dublin Dr Pepper. Tasty!
has Zildjian released these LIVE tracks as downloadable singles or anything?
