Just the idea of revenge when someone wrongs you instead of healing and removing that person from your life. Doing something to hurt them they way they hurt you only stunts your growth and doesn’t take away the pain you are dealing with in the first place. I’m so glad I quickly learned this was not the ideology to have in life. And yes I LOVE the visual podcasts!

I just want to mention that unfortunately a lot of people don’t have the extra money that the mango language app is available free through most libraries as long as you have a library card. It’s immersive and I enjoy using it.

Worst advice ive gotten: dont apply to this internship (or job/etc), you are too young and inexperienced. Glad I never listened. I got accepted and it changed my life. Dont let others tell you what you can or can’t accomplish. Dont hold yourself back just because someone doesn’t believe in you.

The worst advice Ive ever received to this day is to lower my standards for other people around me... its bs! and because I uphold high standards for the people closest to me Ive been able to stay true to my core values, protect my energy, stay out of drama and care for my mental health. Im a firm believer that if you truly love yourself you will be picky with your energy and with who you allow in your circle! Its okay to deny access when people are not meeting your standards

worst advice was to change career paths to be realistic; i went to a talk this week, and the host basically said that a good mentor is someone who isnt going to give you the advice for the trendline; if youre an outlier (which to a degree we all are), you need tailored advice

Worst advice I've ever received was from a college advisor who told me to stick to my plan of study. I had already gotten approval from my professor to skip a class and move in to the higher class and my advisor tried to tell me that wasn't possible. Make a plan of study that works for you and your interests. We spend too much money on tuition for it to be cookie cutter.

You can break a scone into two pieces. You cannot easily break a stone into two while trying to hunt dinner in the wilderness, even if you did it may become too small or useless for throwing. Having one stone means having one chance.

@21:09 I had an old white male professor tell me I shouldn't apply to a very good college, he thought that I wouldn't "fit" in as it's mostly upper class....and I'm black and working class background--what an idiot. I did it got in and loved it. How will we grow if we never change things or expand out of a box?
He also didnt' even realize his advice was racist and more. HE said the women who attended that college were well traveled and ...has "big calves." ughhh...what the heck do their calves have to do with anything??? So funny, he had the tweed suit with the pathces at elbow. So glad I didn't listen. Trust your gut.

Couldn't agree more about the pros and cons of where you live. I feel like it's the same in small town, rural KY. Spring time is gorgeous (when it's not raining) and I love being relatively close to my family and friends. But maaaan, do I get in a rut with the same old, same old.

Thank you Jo for the Visual Podcast! I enjoy all your videos because you speak the realist truth! You are an OG! I've learned so much from you. As a former Communications Arts students, I can honestly relate to the "go back to the drawing board" comment. Sometimes these professors don't know best. Point of View is is essential when asking for advice. I wish there were more diversity in higher education insitutions, because diverse minds have a better frame of reference.

ayee im glad to see you're uploading visual podcasts now! Its so dope that you're adding extra footage and effects to it so it's not just a standard recording 💕
as for the worst advice i've ever got...CHILE! I've been told by so many ppl from family, acquaintences, etc to not go to therapy bc its a waste of time and all they'll do is suggest some woo woo solutions for your problems and affirm your feelings without being critical. That was a blantant lie bc not every problem with your mental health can be solved by diet, exercise, praying, talking to wiser ppl in your life, etc. If you continously see a concerning pattern with your mental health, it is okay to see help bc it could very well transform your life for the better.

And to think I literally just discovered you this evening from your french video. One thing lead to amother and here I am.

I actually just finished binge-listening to your podcast yesterday! Glad to see the video version of your nephew beat boxing xD
BTW I plan on participating in your 21 day language challenge soon! I appreciate the way you phrased how paying for an app/lessons are an investment in yourself. I've noticed a lot of language channels have been ragging on Duolingo lately, which makes me sad because that has been a really helpful resource for me both to refresh my high school Spanish and to pinpoint things I need to work on. Obviously that's not the only thing I use, I make mistakes speaking in the real world and watch TH-cam grammar/speaking videos, but as far as apps go it's definitely what I've spent the most time on. The WAY you described it, what I'm sure other people are trying to say about it, inspired me to buy a course and hopefully I'll be doing some tutoring soon cuz I'm sick of not being fluent lol
Most of the worst advice I've gotten are from my mother making generalizations about people, and her presenting that as wisdom she's gained at her age. (Ex all men do this, all people from this culture are this religion, all people with this skin color believe in the super natural etc.) Thankfully I'm old enough to realize its bs and even my younger sister knows it's poopoocaca thanks to the environment we grew up in, somehow we turned out pretty mindful.

Worst advice - not actually a direct piece of advice but more on my end thinking others knew what was best for me. Trust yourself bc only you know you best. (This is not to say never take advice but don’t value other’s advice and opinions over your own to the point where you keep doing things that don’t work for you) my example is “do the hardest thing first” when that actually is very counter productive for how I personally work.
