The Kinks were an English rock band formed in London in 1963 by brothers Ray and Dave Davies. They are regarded as one of the most influential rock bands of the 1960s. The Kinks' music drew from a wide range of influences, including American R&B and rock and roll initially and later adopting British music hall, folk, and country. The band gained a reputation for reflecting English culture and lifestyle, fuelled by Ray Davies' wittily observational writing style. The Kinks and the songs of Ray Davies are now rightfully established as a great British institution. From the opening riff of You Really Got Me, The Kinks’ influence as pioneers in heavy metal, power pop, conceptual albums, and theatrical shows can be detected in much modern music.
This, and much more, can be seen on this TH-cam channel exclusively devoted to these true British originals.

My mum knew my dad as a clown, he was a massive man that laughed all the time. He died in 1992. She followed him this year, they’re finally together. Death of a clown, I’m a clown reborn. Love you mum and dad.
Ah Bless You X ❤
That truly touches my heart men

The thing I love the most about the Kinks is they were old when they were young. Very cool.
I love The Kinks. Such a beautiful and powerful song.
I love this song since 1967... I was 7... 👍✌️😎🇺🇲🖖
Another brilliant song from the best band ever.
@SundaeExpress Well, it's still a great song.☺️
@@SundaeExpress It's a Dave Davies solo performed by The Kinks.

It's been so so many years since I've heard this record, still frickn' amazing !!

This is perfect theme music for Keith Moon.!
"The lions they won't bite and the tigers won't roar". This had me in absolute tears upon listening for the first time.

he said ONE OF. Which means multiple.

@3 1 / 0 3 Are you aware that the Beatles weren't the only band in the 1960's?
Dave Davies. Stay free.. 🍻 😎 🤡
👍👍👍👍👍❤️
The Kinks can sound like The Beatles, the who, Bob dylan, the band, and even some new wave types like the talking heads.
Dave Davies . all the way
It's tempting to think that many of those artists you listed sound like The Kinks.
They all sound like the kinks
Don't forget, they can say one syllable and you understand the entire word
Come dancing 💃 Tucson Arizona Sonoran desert 🏜
Brilliant song.
Another great song from the summer of love ,l remember sitting in the back of my dad's black ford pop on holiday in Bournemouth that year ,radio Caroline on the Motorola radio, seeing lots of old 1950s cars hand painted pink and psycadelic colours ,and teenage flower children in kaftans and belll bottoms ,the girls in mini dresses and some in ponchows ,and of course ,the smell of Joss sticks. What a song ,what a year .
Now I know you won't believe this but it's true. Back in the mid sixties I used to listen to Radio Caroline too, on my portable short wave Radio (even had A.M., no F.M. back then) So your saying, so what ,big deal. Yeah big deal cause I lived in Boston, Massachusetts, New England in the U.S.of A. Got to be at least 3,000 miles ( 5,000 klicks}.
The Kinks , one of my favourite songs by them...............its British social history wrapped up in beautiful music.A band without peers.
That's the happiest sad song I've heard. Excellent!
I love the falsetto backing vocal melodies. Hauntingly beautiful.

Hi Eric, great comment.
@@theovanbrederode6181 you put it splendid,, thanks

Agree!! Great song, beautiful background backing!!
👍👍👍🤡
I know it's easy to say stuff is "influential"
But man you can literally hear the seeds of Bowie, Gabriel-era Genesis, Gentle Giant etc in this.
Maybe!!!!
Probably the best song by the Kinks, ever
This was Dave's first solo song but the Kinks backed him on it. He didn't get the solo recognition he deserved until years later. Most of his solo stuff is available now in some format. Rock on Mr. Dave 🖖👽
memories of 1970 motorbiking down to cornwall with my now late friend on the back, called at a pub in plymouth seeking a room for the night,,this classic was banging out on the jukebox. i was 18yrs
Mal Barker I can relate. Honestly, there'd barely be a single song you could play me from this era that wouldn't evoke something in me - some poignancy, some loss, some fluttering memory of a place or a friend or a lover. Gone.

Strangers. . . IMO, fits snuggly in to one of the top songs of earths' collection. . . not a numbers guy, or critic, but the Kinks' "Strangers" needs to be up there phenominal piece..

Team Dave all the way 🖖👽✨💖🐒🎾
The kinks to me have got to be one of the top ten bands of all time, up there with the Beatles for me ✊
indeed!
The best underrated band ever!
They sound fuckin' great..from Alcohol to the stranger or Apeman.
Not underrated-- not by a long shot
Absolutely nothing whatsoever underrated about the Kinks - each one of the four were/are little diamonds, as Tommy Docherty would have said at the time if he had had any interest in pop music.
I'm in my mid 50s and I think the Kinks were totally massively underrated, as in the rolling stones, huge, stadium fillers, their music was boring shit, ask a 20 year old today if theyve heard of mick jagger, they'll probably say yes, ask if they've heard of Ray Davies, no chance, a much much better song writer, hence very underated!
@@TrickyRic58 do you honestly think the Kinks aren't underated mate? They are massively underated, the pub band that was the rolling stones over shadowed a by far more talented band in the Kinks
Sure Bowie was inspired by that song for his Hunky Dory stuff. One of my all time fav, beautiful song.
100% agreed. Can totally hear that
j,ai 73 ans , et oui !!!! cette musique est tjs aussi sublime
tant de bons souvenirs !!!

One of many fantastic songs by the Kinks
Just like 'lola' the lyrics are brilliant.

One of the best songs by the kinks.
The best alcoholic clown song I've ever heard.

Yeahhhh
This should have been played at "Gacy's" Execution.
Its in my top 3
@@robbieclark7828 Good question. It feels like it should be a genre, but i can only actually think of that Everley Brothers' song Cathy's Clown, another favourite... not sure whether or not he was alcoholic though.
And I'm thinking too of the Doors' Strange Days, but maybe only because it had clowns (IIRC?) or circus performers on the album cover...
So lovely....thanks Ray & Dave for so many happy days.....days we'll remember all our lives.
You'll live forever...as long as people listen to real music.!
It's funny how music gets imprinted on you when young. I only discovered what this song was in my teens after knowing (and loving) it as a kid when my parents played it. It's still a stunning song.
Still a great song after all this years...
The mark of quality
Kinks should have dedicated this song top Keith Moon. It fits perfectly.

I never heard this song until now and I’m 65. The lyrics are just perfect.
What a band, and Ray and Dave are still with us.
I think of the Kinks as the best band after the Beatles, and this song was one of their very best, bloody brilliant track! We used to listen to it on a Dansette record player with the volume turned up full, and get our heads as close to the speaker panel on the front of the record player as possible. I still listen to this song today and still get the same powerful feeling of awe as I did when it was first released.
🌻
There is a remote possibility there were better than the Bateless, who squabbled all the way to 1970.
Much better than the Beatles. Much more English.

Ragged pop genius. It's whimsical, crusty and achingly sad and beautiful. Modern production would kill everything great about this song.

Incredibly under-rated, even to this day - both as a band and especially Ray Davies as a songwriter. Never attained the status they truly deserved.
Respectfully disagree, Beatles, Stones, Who, Kinks in that order, remember the sixties well and this is just my opinion but maybe just not as well remembered as the other big bands.
@@johnfisher697 Weren't they more popular in Europe and the rest of the world than in the USA, 'cause they were denied making concert tours there and were therefore more or less neglected?
@@Muziekgenot Perhaps I was a little dismissive of the original comment made by Paul Needs, they were a great band and Ray Davies a very underrated composer.
For commercial success you need to be popular in America, perhaps they never had the impact of the other three bands,
My own feeling is they were too "English" and did not connect with the American mind set at that time.
I don't know if they were denied touring, perhaps Drugs were involved (the usual excuse at that time )..
The thing with a band like the Kinks is they will still have a hard core of fans who will stick with them forever and still see them in concert if they still play of course.
Is this my favourite Kinks song........... Quite possibly. I love it!

ITALIAN VERSION
By Nomadi...Un Figlio Dei Fiori Non Pensa Al Futuro
Amico che
(Death of a clown)
(D. Davies - Guccini)
Correct. Also, it has to be "break up this GROUND"...as in, dig a grave.
Dave was just tired of being "the clown" of parties and gigs. One day he just sat down to play the piano and the words just came out of his tired heart.

One of the. Kinks greats 👍🤡
The Kinks created wonderful lyrics. No other band really could do so. My English is poor but iI think everybody understands the message!
Yeah I think that says a whole lot about what talented writers the Davies boys are. My French is very poor but I also really love the music of Jacques Dutronc. He's often compared to Ray Davies.
Your command of English is just fine. Read some of the other abysmal attempts, you'll barf.
