Kinks top 10 UK hit single in 1965, written by Ray Davies, which appeared on their album The Kink Kontroversy that same year. Stated by Ray Davies as being about freedom. It’s a song about escaping something”.

The Kinks were miles ahead of anyone else-- their ingenuity spoke volumes.
Filmed on Little Green Street. I'm happy to say its still there and looks roughly the same. Even if the rest of London doesn't.
I wonder how much a two room apartment costs there now?
@@jimbobt1 It doesn't even bear thinking about.
That house on little green st is where ray and Dave lived with there older sister Rosie and her husband so it was all about a free location shoot 😏
I always wondered where it was. Great intel! Great song.
Has ulez affected it yet??
True geniuses of the British music industry. Legends 👍🏆🇬🇧
Ray is a chronicler of British society his words can say more than any politician can say a masterful track by a masterful songwriter
Indeed as one of their songs -- Plastic Man, to which, today we are truly a PLASTIC MAN. So it was indeed a song, that revealed the truth of the future ahead, of the time that song was released. The KINKS are KINGS !!
Yes, I agree, good lyrics 🎶😃🎉🇩🇪

The Importance of being Kinks

I immediately thought of The Importance of Being Idle (Oasis) The video is a bit similar. I wonder if Noel G shot the video on the same street.
About 40 years ago, I read a book on the history of music videos that made special note of this video, as it was apparently the first time someone made a sort of a conceptual video that wasn't showing the band pretending to sing the song on a soundstage, or in a field or whatever. The only time you see them lip synching is the "Yeah!" at the end of each refrain. That was something that pretty much had never been done before.
Absolute classic.
I heard The Kinks were the band other rock stars talked about at their parties. I love the subversive thought of that.
Of all the British Invasion bands- Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, The Who with Keith Moon and all, it was the Kinks that got banned from America for four critical years due to backstage and onstage antics. There may have possibly been, just an outside chance of, alcoholic beverages being involved. :)
And we Americans were deprived because of it. The Rolling Stones were OK but not the Kinks?? 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️
@@sagegoodwin1 Led Zeppelin and the who were not part of the British Invasion
Fantastic one of the best bands ever
Filmed in Little Green Street, off Highgate in London. A perfectly preserved little bit of Georgian London which has somehow survived the last 240 years untouched by time. Its still there, bow fronted windows and the cobbled lane. The cottages were originally shops, hence the bow-fronted windows.
They really need to give it another go. I'd go anywhere to
See them live one more time.
Incredible band. Ray is a master
Dave is always right there
“What Are We Living For?” ❤
Love the whispering yea~yea~yea at the end . . . shhhhh . . .
Trenchant social comment, delivered with humour and style. Superb!!
The old lady who lets the undertakers in, is Dave in drag. The second old lady with glasses on, peeking out the window is actually Ray. 😂🧐
a classic panto tradition
One of my top fave songs of the 60's. I was 13 then...
This is The Clash before The Clash. So powerful song.
Also, Oasis had borrowed off the song's melody and even the music video for their song The Importance of Beong Ifle.
dunno about the the clash but deffo Madness before Madness

The Kinks,I love them.Best Band ever❤
They developed into a great band...this is just one of the very good songs they did between 1965 and 1967
Have never seen this video before -yet have known the song for years.
@jonathanmurphy,
Believe it or not the BBC banned this video in the 60s because it showed poor people in the street!!
As important as The Beatles are to music I'm equally in awe of The Kinks and especially the song writing skills of Ray Davies.
Just utter class!.
One of me faves
We getting out of the cold war with this one🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thank god for that, I thought the music video was gonna be off TH-cam for good!
The Davies brothers have added a lot to the rock and roll lexicon - and they never shied away from pointed social commentary, unlike some of their brighter burning peers
By invitation, the Kinks should have played Victoria then this at the Coronation party gig.
Legends
This is the new American anthem.
I love the satire they brought to their music.
I love british rock
Oh god! All the stuff I liked as a kid and my classmates not are now considered classic!
Guess on the long run I was on the right track and they not...harr harr!

Utterly Brilliant . 0:50 👈🏻Always thought the 'choir" sings "Hey Hey".....official lyrics states It's "Dead End"......
[Verse 1]
There's a crack up in the ceiling
And the kitchen sink is leaking
Out of work and got no money
A Sunday joint of bread and honey
[Pre-Chorus]What are we living for?
Two-roomed apartment on the second floor
No money coming in
The rent collector's knocking, trying to get in
We are strictly second class
And we don't understand
[Chorus](Dead end!) Why we should be on dead end street?
People are living on dead end street
I'm gonna die on dead end street (Yeah!)
[Verse 2]
On a cold and frosty morning
Wipe my eyes and stop me yawning
And my feet are nearly frozen
Boil the tea and put some toast on
No chance to emigrate
I'm deep in debt and now it's much too late
We both want to work so hard
We can't get the chance
[Chorus]
(Dead end!) People live on dead end street
(Dead end!) People are dying on dead end street
(Dead end!) I'm gonna die on dead end street
Head to my feet (Yeah!)
How's it feel? (Yeah)
😢
Kind of a hard but sadly truthful pill to swallow as a 10y old.
Still so grateful though to my mom, who was a huge fan in her teen years, for introducing me to The Kinks.
Thanks so much. Simple song of which the lyrics went over most heads. After such early great songs, they snuck brilliantly into social comments.

My favorite
That's lil green street notorious for one of the last remaining Victorian neighborhoods in London. Boi we had great times filming back in the late 40s before and during WW2.
poverty, hopelessness, appalling living conditions - and all with no hope of getting out. this one's practically a call to armed revolution.
Love The Kinks! First time ever hearing this song. 🙂
As a songwriter he most definitely isn't strictly second class, he is in a class of his own! 👌
I was a child when this was in the hit charts. I loved it as a pop song....had no idea what it was about
Classic
I have a video of my Daughter dancing to this! She liked the beat and the word's! 3 generations my Dad used to balance me on his feet having a "Boogie" to this💕
Would this be considered the first rock video? Very clever, and the song funny and tragic by turns. Kinks are unheralded ground-breakers and beyond categorization, so tough sell in an industry that prefers extroverted, charismatic rebels. Thanks to Ray and rest of band for their artistry.
It is certainly an early video as we know them. However, Beatles fans will argue that anyone made a “video” before them.
it is said to be the first social conscience type song in british pop history
Certainly doesnt look the typical 60s video where the members are just goffing around
In my opinion the very first punk rock song and in 1964?!
1966.
I have no idea how you can hear this as a punk song though!

I'm convinced Noel Gallagher got his influence for the importance of being idle from this track.
Definitely 🤘🏻
I think he’s acknowledged he did.
Little Green Street - London, side street of Highgate Road
In the late 60ies a friend lent me that single. It was the first pop song I heared at home. It sounded very strange to me. I grew up in a classic musical family.
Ahead of it's time.
Way ahead

No its not its right there in the 60s
People had a social conscience then its not new in fact that's when civil strife showed its hand
What time is this alluded to ahead of its own times ⏲️
@@andrewjohnstone963 I believe he’s talking about the actual audio, not necessarily the social commentary. Even then, there’s still an argument to be made for them. I can’t think of many songs from the 60’s speaking on subject matter like this. Maybe you could share some?
@All Bottled Up the 60s were littered with social commentary
It was the first decade where people especially young people said it how they saw things
Hence plenty of social commentary the 60s paved the way for such expression!
Classic!
Great video this obviously influenced Oasis " The Importance Of Being Idle"

Bis das Licht ausgeht…. Ein Leben lang..
Gods of British rock music. Better than Beatles.
Always at least one silly ****** on every Kinks vid coming out with that bollocks.
@@cityliving9265 And always at least one man on every vid who begins to teach other people how to live and shows bad manners.. It's so sad.
@@andrewlove9566 Of course, it's not oafishly narcissistic, rude and obnoxious to declare one's opinions as facts. Let alone silly to claim that pointing that out is 'telling people how to live'.
I've never known someone to make that cliched claim who wasn't doing so in some haughty, jumped up, arrogant fashion as if they know more than the mainstream and their opinion is more refined because of that.
It's like saying Gregory Isaacs was better than Bob Marley, and worse, doing so in an arrogant way.
There is no one like Bob or the Wailers, same with the Beatles. They transcend music in a way that is in a category of one among their nearest rivals And that is objective fact. No band can show a staggering, life changing musical journey of such depth, variety, creativity on such a prolific scale as the Beatles.
To say so by way of an objective claim, when it is only an opinion, displays a truly foolish arrogance and self-importance and a complete disrespect of Beatles fans, as the underlying premise is they are following the mainstream and what's popular and don't have the refined musical nous you, and the million other claimants, believe yourselves to possess.
Have to agree with you.The Kinks were fiercely underrated, apart from, apparently, all the other pioneering bands around in that phenomenal decade for music. They all knew the score and what a phenomenal song writer Ray was.Dave Davies single handedly invented ‘the riff’.
As a side note I believe ‘Village green preservation society’ is up there with, and possibly slightly better than the ‘White album’,and I’m a massive Beatles fan.But the Kinks were just in a league of their own 🙏🙏
About 200 great songs behind The Beatles. FINAL SCORE: Beatles 230 KINKS 30,,,,,

Figures
Ray is God
[Verse 1]
I sold my soul for the second time
'Cause the man don't pay me
I begged my landlord for some more time
He said, "Son, the bills are waiting"
My best friend called me the other night
He said, "Man, are you crazy?"
My girlfriend told me to get a life
She said, "Boy, you lazy"
[Chorus]
But I don't mind
As long as there's a bed beneath the stars that shine
I'll be fine
If you give me a minute
A man's got a limit
I can't get a life if my heart's not in it
[Guitar solo]
[Chorus]
I don't mind
As long as there's a bed beneath the stars that shine
I'll be fine
Give me a minute

Am I right in thinking the chap in the video faked his own death to escape the bailiffs? I've watched this countless times over the years and it's only just dawned on. He's clearly putting his own boots on in one scene. I assumed the ending was just for laughs.

Vendredi 18 novembre 1966 : Les Kinks sortent le single "Dead End Street" / "Big Black Smoke". Ils en profitent pour fêter le retour de leur batteur Peter Quaife en tournant un film promo du single
Peter Quaife was their bass player, not their drummer. He had been in a car accident and was out of the band for a few months. I think Dave actually played bass on this track.
I expected one of them to collapse and die and the others to put him in the coffin. But then I remembered this is before Monty Python
Anyone know when this video was made? I wasn’t aware of music videos being made in the 60’s.
They were called promotional videos/films. They would send them to booking agents, radio stations, music stores as another way of showing the bands off besides just sending records, tape reels, and photos.
Just look Help, ticket to ride, etc by the beatles or i'm a believer by the monkees or the kids are alright by the who
