I remember coming home at night, usually in the winter time, from the boxing gym, and this show would come on. We would train for the golden gloves and I also worked out with several pro's who were fighting on ESPN Top Rank at that time. This was...geez, 1984, 1985, 1986. I remember I"d be tired as hell, full of sweat, and I'd plop myself down in the chair and try to eat something. I'd see this intro and think, so that's what boxers do when they're done, they get a hot girlfriend and go to Toscano for dinner and so on. It all looked and sounded so nice. lol I hadn't heard this song or seen this intro in YEARS. Thanks for the good memories.

Barbara Stock left the show after season 1 due to a contract dispute. Prior to the third season, Robert Urlich called her and asked her to return for season 3. Ms. Stock still wasn't thrilled with the production staff but because she was such good friends with Mr. Urich she came back
This show was the shit! Robert Urich was a cool ass white boy, and Avery Brooks was a total bad ass! Their chemistry was real and you could see it on screen. And filming the series in a bad ass city like Boston, Mass. only added to the authenticity of the shows characters. The 1980s produced some of the best TV cops shows and movies of the century. If I could jump through a time portal I’d want to end up in 1980 when it all started!!
It started way before the 80's. You need to watch Vega$, Police Woman, Beretta, Kojack, Charile's Angels, Hart to Hart, Starsky and Hutch, Rockford Files, and Swat.

All the ones you mentioned as well as Hawaii Five-O, The Streets of San Francisco, Columbo, TJ Hooker, Mike Hammer, Magnum, PI, The Equalizer, Miami Vice, Hill Street Blues, Cagney & Lacey, Moonlighting, In The Heat of The Night and Hunter were and still are the best!

from what I've read although Spencer for Hire was well received-ABC cancelled it after 3 years as the cost of filming it in Boston and the environs of Massachusetts was huge--it has been said that the state of Massachusetts made something like ~$50 million a year during its run there
I didn't watch the series it first came out cuz I was younger but my dad used to always tell me about it. I've always liked Robert Urich but my favorite character is Hawk. Avery Brooks did an excellent job bringing him life. Great show all around. My dad died in 1995 and every time I watch this I think of him.

Mr. Urich had a vacation home near where I lived in Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada. He loved the area because the locals here never bothered him or his family or even approached him for autographs etc. During his struggle with the sarcoma that ended his life, he still volunteered his time to help out at a youth camp in the summers here for children who were also battling cancer. Upon his death in 2002, he was buried at the site of his vacation home-the one place he loved the most
I wont go dogging out Samuel Jackson, but Hawk was badass as they come and what made him more sinister in his appearance was that he was a man of few words...so your imagination did the rest....and your imagination is limitless!
I can't remember which season, but fun fact, Samuel Jackson played a low level pimp/thug that Hawk roughed up for some information. Sammy fell to Hawk's intimidation quickly. So there it is for you guys! Hawk owned Jackson!

Anyway, I loved this show when I was a kid. These days I greatly prefer the novels. Nonetheless, I still see the late, great Robert Urich and Avery Brooks as Spenser and Hawk (respectively) when I read the books. They will always embody the characters to me.

" Hawk is death on delinquent teenagers!" he yelled.( He happened to have 3 teenaged kids,) Our little group was very high on A Man Called Hawk, but alas, it only lasted the one season

Wish we could purchase the series on DVD but not available as yet. Avery Brooks was great. Glad I saw the show before I read the novels because Avery's Hawk is better than Robt. Parker's (and Parker almost said as much). True, as Parker said, Robt. Urich "played himself". But his Spenser was a nice balance to the darker character in the books. Greg Gibbs

Barbra Stock who played Susan Silverman in seasons 1 & 3 was the psychologist/guidance counselor on Spenser. Carolyn McCormick who played Rita Fiore in season 2 played the psychologist Dr. Elizabeth Olivet on Law & Order.
I agree with Gregory Gibbs. Maybe we should start a serious grass roots, kick-ass petition to Warner Bros (I guess) and get it going. I'm a serious collector of RBP Sepenser novels. Currently I've 24 hardcovers, & I found 2 signed copies (A Catskill Eagle & Pale KIngs & Princes which I found at a 2nd hand store) When I read I 'hear' & picture the cast. To be honest I dont find Spenser a dark character, he has dark moments. Like in Valdication when Suze leaves for CA and A Catskill Eagle when he rescues Suze & Hawk.
Dear Cavillier1970 Valediction was just the novel I had in mind with the "darker" comment. Urich's Spenser could not have killed a body guard just to protect a hooker from a probable (non-lethal) beating. In any case I hope we'll get our wish with a DVD release one day. Greg Gibbs
Greg youre right about Valediction being a 'darker' novel. I agree with you 100% And I think the same applies for the next one in the series, A Catskill Eagle. We're talking about Susan admiting to an affair, leaving Spenser him drinking to much and helping Paul's friend.I remember the end of Valediction, the hooker shot Spenser three times as he charged her and crushed her windpipe before collapsing. I think this 'darkness' came from Joan & Robert Parker had seperated and worked things out. Although if called to it I think Urich could have played the scenes. I mean he played a darker role in The Lazerus Man and in Lonesome Dove he was traitor to his friends and was hung. I think he was up to the challenge.

Yeah, this and Star Trek Voyager are my favorite maintitles of all time. If you look close at the last frame, you might see the cancer that took his life beginning on Urich's cheek and ear lobe. What's with Spenser? They had a great first season theme, then ruined it for the rest of the series with the laid back, corny version. They kept switching girls, too. Thanks for sharing. Can't seem to find any full Spenser episodes.

Spenser for Hire from the studio that gave us F-Troop, Alice, Night Court, The Dukes of Hazzard, Growing Pains, Head of the Class, China Beach, Scarecrow and Mrs. King and Wonder Woman Spenser for Hire was an awesome show, the only problem was that during the 1st season, it debut up against another NBC Cop Show Miami Vice and it later got moved to Tuesday Nights Spenser & Hawk were a great dynamic duo, but sadly, they couldn't compete against Crockett & Tubbs

I've long said MJW should play Hawk, but George Clooney missed the window to play Spenser. Ditto for Katherine Zeta-Jones as Susan Silverman. I saw a poster of Clooney and Jones for "Intolerable Cruelty" and exclaimed: "Hey, that's Spenser and Susan!"

Season 2's is fantastic done by the great late George Howard. But I gotta say season 1 is just the best version for me. Both are great in their own ways.
Being clumsy with tech I'll post vs. reply to Robert Bush Jr. and Cavillier1970. I don't much like Susan in the novels. Think Barabara Stock played a better character than Parker wrote, just as did Avery Brooks. Parker tells us how wonderful Susan is in the novels, but doesn't usually show us much. I have enjoyed the Ace Atkins novels so far, albeit I am just getting into "Cheap Shot" I wasn't crazy about Parker's westerns {I mean, come on, everyone knows Doc Holiday shot Johnny Ringo, not Wyatt Erp}. Also, it annoyed me that in his later years he repeated dialogue lines so much. Not only having Spenser and Susan say "we'd be fools not to" over and over, but even putting the line in Jess Stone's mouth. Still, when he was of a mind, he could write a fight scene brilliantly. And then there is this synergistic thing about Robert Urich, Avery Brooks and Barbara Stock. Also, Richard Jaekel was, I thought, perfect as Quirk. Even Ron McClarty, playing a totally different character than Belson of the novels, brought a lightness and warmth that were very positive [Remember the "Frank and Frankie" episode?]

I mean he played a darker role in The Lazerus Man and in Lonesome Dove he was traitor to his friends and was hung. I think he was up to the challenge.
Yea he went real dark on that pimp he killed and robbed in valediction i always thought spenser and hawks freindship showed through brightest in that novel because it illustrates that for the correct reason their behavior isn't as far apart as spenser would prefer to think opposite sides of the same coin rip RBP we miss you.....Peace and long life RB

And I've been talking w/ some folks in the FB RBP Group about Susan,one of the joys of the Spenser series or a selfish, irritating character? And I mentioned how Spenser has said if she was in his life he'd be like Hawk. Wish is something we all seem to agree on.

Yeah, this and Star Trek Voyager are my favorite maintitles of all time. If you look close at the last frame, you might see the cancer that took his life beginning on Urich's cheek and ear lobe. What's with Spenser? They had a great first season theme, then ruined it for the rest of the series with the laid back, corny version. They kept switching girls, too. Thanks for sharing. Can't seem to find any full Spenser episodes.

Not exactly-- they went from one to the other for the second go (Carolyn McCormick as Boston ADA Rita Fiori [1986-87]), then back to the original (Barbara Stock/Susan Silverman) for the third and final go (1987-88).

Spenser for Hire was an awesome show, the only problem was that during the 1st season, it debut up against another NBC Cop Show Miami Vice and it later got moved to Tuesday Nights
Spenser & Hawk were a great dynamic duo, but sadly, they couldn't compete against Crockett & Tubbs

I've long said MJW should play Hawk, but George Clooney missed the window to play Spenser. Ditto for Katherine Zeta-Jones as Susan Silverman. I saw a poster of Clooney and Jones for "Intolerable Cruelty" and exclaimed: "Hey, that's Spenser and Susan!"

Compared with the intended reboot with Mark Wahlberg portraying Spenser as an ex-con , Nathan Dillion would have done the role justice.

Maybe it's just me, but I've always been a big fan of the Season 2 theme. I don't know. I'm knocking this one, but for me, Season 2.
Season 2's is fantastic done by the great late George Howard. But I gotta say season 1 is just the best version for me. Both are great in their own ways.
You can't beat beat this one they should have kept this theme all the way to season 3
Cagney and lacey had the same theme tune for 7 years 1981 till 1988 they could have did it for spencer for hire

Being clumsy with tech I'll post vs. reply to Robert Bush Jr. and Cavillier1970. I don't much like Susan in the novels. Think Barabara Stock played a better character than Parker wrote, just as did Avery Brooks. Parker tells us how wonderful Susan is in the novels, but doesn't usually show us much. I have enjoyed the Ace Atkins novels so far, albeit I am just getting into "Cheap Shot" I wasn't crazy about Parker's westerns {I mean, come on, everyone knows Doc Holiday shot Johnny Ringo, not Wyatt Erp}. Also, it annoyed me that in his later years he repeated dialogue lines so much. Not only having Spenser and Susan say "we'd be fools not to" over and over, but even putting the line in Jess Stone's mouth. Still, when he was of a mind, he could write a fight scene brilliantly. And then there is this synergistic thing about Robert Urich, Avery Brooks and Barbara Stock. Also, Richard Jaekel was, I thought, perfect as Quirk. Even Ron McClarty, playing a totally different character than Belson of the novels, brought a lightness and warmth that were very positive [Remember the "Frank and Frankie" episode?]
