Imo the Dragon Ball franchise feels a bit superior because it is one of the first ones to really provide a power fantasy for boys/teens (as far as I know bleach and naruto came later) with a good story. It is a story with aliens but it actually maks sense and is overall a really cool story (I am normally no into the alien type stories but this one actually makes a lot of sense in that world). It also has one of the best couples in anime history - not the cuddly romantic kind of love but a relationship with actual obstacles and a deep developed bond at it's core which also makes one of the best character developments for a certain character which originally started out as a villian.
In this case I stongly recommend not watching in sub but go for dub !

Dragon ball is one of the older animes, it was created in 1983 originally as Dragon Boy, then that got adapted into Dragon Ball (1984). The first series has a lighthearted tone early on but gets more serious later on while keeping some goofy moments. Dragon Balls sequel, Dragon Ball Z (1989) takes a more serious tone with a lot more darker moments. Dragon Ball Super (2015) is the sequel to that and takes a more lighthearted tone similar to the first show with fewer dark moments. You should definitely react to Dragon Ball Z opening 1 and 2, Dragon Ball Z Kai opening, and Dragon Ball Super Opening 1. Its definitely a must see if you want to start watching anime though.

In Japan, you're considered crazy if you haven't watched even one episode of this anime, because it had the most impact on pop culture and is also the first Shonen anime to make its way to the West, whose manga creator is the famous Akira Toriyama. The Dragon Ball manga has sold over 320 million copies worldwide and ranks as the second most important manga in history. Anime itself is for all time and a symbol of generations. It's really strange that a guy of your age has never heard of the legendary Goku and Kamehameha

To answer some of the questions:
    - Dragon ball anime started in 1984
    - The reason why Dragon Ball left such a huge impression in the world is because it was the first of it's kind and can be considered the 'father of shoenen anime'.
Animes like One Piece, Bleach, Naruto etc. that came later, all had some inspiration in dragon ball.
    - Regarding the order of the seasons, you have:
    1. Dragon Ball
    2. DB Z
2.1 DB Kai (a shorter version of DBZ)
    3 - DB GT
3' - DB Super ( i repeated the no.3, because both GT and Super continue after Z. They are like 2 different timelines.)

Dragon Ball is easily one of the all time most influential series of manga and anime. Not only do untold amounts of anime, many of which you've checked out here, owe much to it in terms of inspiring creators in creating their own stories, but so does the amount of non-Japanese people that even know what anime is. Essentially dragon ball's story is split in to 4 time skips, OG dragon ball covers the story of gokus childhood / teenage years (aired 1980s in Japan and is more of a comady). Z (or kai for a cut down version) covers his adult life where he has kids. Z ends on a time skip 7 years after the last episode (aired 1990s in japan and was a much more action based serise). Super takes place in that 7 year time gap (aired 2010s in japan and is like z in tone). GT was orginally what happened after that 7 year time gap but has been retconned out of existance (aired 1990s in japan started more of comady but returned to action by the end). honestly everything but GT is worth a watch but some of it is a little dated at times also even though OG dragon ball is more a comady it has some amazing fights as well.

    1. Dragon Ball (1986-89)
Very lighthearted, very funny, story about a very young Goku (12 at the beginning) going on a journey finding the wish-granting DragonBalls. Fighting opponents, saving the world without actually becoming famous (He also doesn't want to.) Goku is 18 at the end.
    2. Dragon Ball Z (1989-96)
Tine skip, Goku is 24/25 now, he has a son, lives a peaceful life with his wife. Still funny but it's way darker than the first Anime. His cruel, unknown brother visits him, telling him...
    *[SPOILER]*
...that he's actually a Saiyan. Saiyans are a proud intergalactic race of warriors, killing people and capturing their planets to sell it and make money (Vegeta is their prince. Actually king, but he never refers to himself as king, always prince.) Goku himself was sent to earth as a baby to kill the very weak earthlings, but hit his head and forgot his mission after Gohan (his "grandfather") found him. After that, Goku meets new enemies, that get stronger every time and develops new powers, until his son takes his place at some point (but not for long. Goku sells.)
    It's a time span of ~11yrs, IIRC
    3. Dragon Ball GT (1998/99 I think?)
This is often referred as non-canon, but it actually is for the anime, because it is the official Anime plot after Z... in one time line, you could say. There are several timelines. Not for the Manga, tho. Because it isn't based on a Manga, you could say it's a whole filler Anime, because... Goku sells.
    4. Dragon Ball Kai (2009-11) often called DBZ Kai, but it's just Kai.)
Just a remastered of DBZ. They cut out the fillers and upgraded some scenes to HD. Fan service, but still cool, tho.
    5. Dragon Ball Super (2015-18, hopefully 2023-...)
This is between DragonBall Z and DragonBall GT, but based on an actual Manga again. It's an other time line than GT and replaced it as the official plotline. More enemies, stronger enemies, and the universe gets bigger and bigger. Actually, its multiverse now.
Movies: most of them are non-canon. But pretty good, tho. Only the newer ones are Canon.
    Edit: Super Dragon Ball Heroes
Non-canon. It's a service Anime and Manga to promote a game. No official plot, but it's connecting Dragonball/DragonBall Z/DragonBall Super with DragonBall GT.
    Honorary Edit: DragonBall Z Abridged.
The very best DBZ parody out there by TeamFourStar. 60 episodes covering ~75% of DBZ + some movie parodies and self made productions. Unfortunately they stopped at that point and didn't make it to the end. But it's hilarious!

Dragonball starts the series as a comedy adventure story based around the famous eastern story "Journey to the West." There isn't a massive plot, it's a lot more about the story. The plot can be summarized as "young hero trains to defeat the Demon King."
Dragonball Z focused more on the spectacle of the action. It does retain some of the comedy, but it's more serious and the scope opens up to include Dragon World's version of Heaven and Hell and space.
Dragonball Super brings a lot of the comedy back, but still keeps the serious tone. It also expands the world again to include a Multiverse and focuses a lot on the interactions between the god-level characters. Honestly, it was probably a mistake to bring Dragonball back, but it's a good time anyway.

So heres how the thing goes, there exists a "big 3", which are One Piece Bleach and Naruto , they are the big 3 bcs they all are the long running popular series that came around the same time and its around early to mid 2000s, so like the "golden age", meanwhile Dragon ball isnt part, mostly bcs some consider Dragon ball as the "grandfather" as it came out much earlier than the rest from the late 80s and early 90s and forward

Dragon Ball is probably the most influential Manga of all, it basically is the inspiration for many shounen manga nowadays like One Piece. The dragonball anime is split in three parts, the original Dragonball, Dragonball Z (which is like shippuden) and dragonball super which is a continuation after the original ending of z, which Akira toriyama decided to make after the awful live action Dragonball Evolution movie came out in cinemas. The dragonball super manga is still ongoing to this day (though I haven't read the manga).

Dragon Ball is just one of the OG shonen AND one of the most influential anime in the whole industry. You could say that Dragon Ball has formed a big part of modern anime, specially the shonen genre/demography. If you never watched or heard any Dragon Ball opening, you DEFINITELY should react to them, because they're legendary. The MAIN openings list would be:
1- Dragon Ball opening (Makafushigi Adventure! - 1986)
    2- Dragon Ball Z opening 1 (Cha-La Head Cha-La - 1989)
    3- Dragon Ball Z opening 2 (We Gotta Power - 1994)
4- Dragon Ball GT opening (Dan Dan Kokoro Hikareteku - 1996)
5- Dragon Ball Super opening 1 (Chozetsu Dynamic - 2015)
6- Dragon Ball Super opening 2 (Limit Break x Survivor - 2017) (this one you reacted)
It'd be cool if you react to all of them and then watch again the op 2 of Super and watch the evolution of DB, since almost 20 years passed since the last anime, the change is massive.
BTW!! You mentioned Digimon too, so I'd *FUCKING LOVE* if you react to Digimon openings, is one of my most beloved anime in my childhood, specially the first 4 openings, being Frontier's (the 4th one) my favorite.

Dragon Ball is essentially the grandaddy of the modern Shonen battle anime/manga genre. It first started in 1984 following Son Goku as a child who meets his first friend named Bulma, and they go on a grand adventure to find the Dragon Balls, 7 mysterious crystal orbs that, when gathered together, summons forth a giant Dragon named Shen Long/Shenron that can grant any one wish. It was moreso a comedy with light martial arts at first with a grand sense of adventure, exploring all sorts of wild and crazy locations and meeting all sorts of wacky characters, but as it progressed, it leaned more into the martial arts and became more and more of what you'd see in a Shonen battle series with dynamic martial arts fights, powers, fighting tournaments, and as it went along, Goku would actually age and grow, something that wasn't common at the time. The focus on fighting would just get bigger and bigger from there, going from fighters from all over the world to coming from space to Earth in search of the Dragon Balls to use for nefarious means, and from there, it skyrocketed into popularity, more and more villains would show up, each stronger than the last and Goku and his friends, and even his son, Son Gohan, fighting to protect the Earth. Dragon Ball was also the first to popularize a transformation for a main character, the Super Saiyan transformation is by far one of the most iconic moments in manga/anime history and practically every modern Shonen series has their own spin on a tranformation like the Super Saiyan. In terms of watching the series, start with the original Dragon Ball in Japanese, then when that's done you have two major options, you can watch the original Dragon Ball Z, preferably in Japanese as the dub, despite having so much nostalgia behind it, is very inaccurate to the original version and poorly acted, or Dragon Ball Z Kai which has a more accurate English dub to the Japanese version and more professionally acted by the same cast, and is supremely cut down. See, the original Z anime was running side by side with the manga and the anime staff had to drag things out with filler to wait for the manga so they could keep up, which resulted in nearly 300 episodes most of which were filler, meanwhile Kai cuts out most of the filler for a faster pace more in tune with the manga. Then after that, you have Super, both anime and manga, which actually have different continuities yet end at the same places, which takes place during the very last time-skip of the original manga and anime and further escalates the scale of the series, going multiversal. Then finally, the most infamous part of the original Dragon Ball anime run, we have Dragon Ball GT, which was made right after the Z anime ended and was purely a sequel to the Z anime and the original author, Akira Toriyama, taking a step back for the most part, and it was mostly done by the anime studio, but he was initially involved in the series' production, he came up with several of the character designs, and even the name of the show.
But there we go, Dragon Ball, it's one of my all-time favorite anime/manga series and it's cool to see someone getting into it for the first time!

Dragon ball z originally just dragon ball started out as a martial art science fantasy version of the old East Asian folktale journey to the west which is about a monk and the monkey king
Dragon ball started with a monkey tail kid named goku along with bulma a teenage girl from the city searching for the dragon balls, 7 yellow orbs with stars inside that when brought together summons a wish granting dragon while encountering their own hijinks along the way including 2 martial arts tournament arcs
The manga kept the name dragon ball through out the entire series but the anime changed its name to dragon ball z after a time skip of some years where goku had his own son and other characters went on with their daily lives but then came an alien invasion from an alien race called a saiyan, human looking but with monkey tails just like goku and it’s revealed that goku himself is a saiyan or rather one of the last remaining saiyan as the majority has been wiped out of the universe, dbz is when the series took a huge sci fiction dip and also introduced the super saiyan transformation which is a hidden racial power of the saiyan that turns their hair blond and spiky and their eyes green while also multiplying their overall power output too and is more or less the reason why many shonen anime/manga these days introduced a sort of transformation as a power up
Dragon ball super is the sequel to dbz long after it ended cuz the west decided to make their own westernized and bastardization of the original dragon ball as a live action movie which was so bad akira toriyama the creator of dragon got out of retirement to continue the series cuz he didn’t want the last thing people to remember of dbz being the live action, super also expanded upon the saiyan transformation too stating with a movie that introduced the saiyan god transformation through utilizing godly ki that was red compared to the saiyan yellow and then combining the super saiyan transformation resulting in the current blue saiyan transformation
Dragon ball predates series like Pokémon, digimon yugioh etc by about a decade

Summary to Dragon Ball all series [little bit spoilerish I guess]
First series comes Dragon Ball [only without Z or Super] . The story for all series revolve around a guy named Goku and Goku only loves one thing the most and that is to fight . In Dragon Ball the story starts from little Goku who is a child living in mountains and meets a girl who tells him about 7 dragon balls which after gathering them together can grant u one wish of any type . Goku had one of those balls and the girl demands it saying "u can have it back after use" . Goku not understanding most of everything starts going with her saying after use he will take the ball back . But he didn't knew this was start of his legend as he isn't just a normal human cuz he had a tail too . going from place to place meeting new people Goku found stronger and stronger people . He entered tournaments and even fought a whole army due to some events and in the end fought an alien and found out who created the dragon balls on Earth and trained with him and then got married
Second series comes Dragon Ball Z as one day he with his child goes to meet his friends after years and that day his real brother comes to meet him and he finds out who he really is . After that some more people come after him and the story starts to go into outer space as he and his friends go to the planet of people who have the power to create dragon balls . Due to a mission they went there But end up fighting an emperor of universe . Years later a boy from the future arrives as he mistakenly ends up bringing the biggest threat with him but somehow they survive . Years later something sealed in Earth gets unsealed and that is the biggest threat I would say in all Dragon Ball series .
Third series still going on in manga is Dragon Ball Super in which the focus more goes towards Gods as in last act of Dragon Ball Z a few gods were around but now it's literally angels and gods . Not all of them are bad but now Goku's strength is now equals to gods and battles are alaways universal fighting from planet to planet

Gonna synthetize it all for you bud (without spoilers ofc) : Dragon Ball is an old show, showing Goku as a kid growing up. He's very strong and different for a kid, and we follow his adventures, learning martial art and on a quest to find all 7 Dragon Balls. Dragon Ball Z came out in the early 90's and happens years after the end of Dragon Ball, Goku is a young adult, and the plot starts to go crazy (but crazy good). Martial art and fights take a whole new dimension, getting way above human capacities (way above). And then comes Dragon Ball Super, which came out in 2015, and is the literal continuation of DBZ. Things keep escalating as usual, going into some divine levels (and i personally very enjoyed it).
It's one of the first (if not the first) shonen which has decided of what a shonen will be. It's one of those anime that decided how anime is gonna be. I don't say it's the best, but it's god damn good and a solid base to start with anime. A lot of youtubers literally popped-off and gained A LOT of followers just by reacting to Dragon Ball Super and DBZ. If you would do such a thing (reacting to DBZ and Dragon Ball Super) it would be very benefitial to your channel (i think) and i would really enjoy watching it. I would simply advise you to watch Dragon Ball (when Goku is a child) on your own, because it's kinda necessary for the story and it's not quite as popular. Keep up the good work man !

    Great reaction as always.
If you want to know what the show is about:
In Dragonball where Goku is still a kid, the show os about finding the seven dragonballs which can summon a wish granting dragon called Shenlong. Kid Goku found friends and fought evil people who searched for the dragonballs to achieve world domination and stuff. It was mostly a comedy/adventure show with a lot of martial arts.
At the start of Dragonball Z Goku is already the strongest person on earth so the author had to start inroducing aliens and other planets to have villians that Goku would have to overcome and at this point I feel like I have to introduce you to dragonballs simple power system:
Every living being has KI Energy (Or Chi, a real concept from Japan) which they can learn to manipulate and strengthen by training (like workouts or fighting a lot). By manipulating their Energy they can toughen their body, strike harder aswell as run and even fly at insane speeds. They can also shoot energy attacks from their body as you've probably seen. By the start of Z most of the characters are already strong enough to blow up a planet and by the end of Super which comes after Z there are multiple characters strong enough to wipe out an entire universe if they wanted too.
The series story is pretty simple as the characters just keep having to protect earth or their universe from stronger evildoers but it doesn't need to have a complicated story as the focus lies on epic fights and struggles.
I hope this could help you understand the basic gist of the series and if I was hard to understand it's because english is not my main language 😅

Dragon Ball is a genre-defining series that has influenced a LOT of other anime and manga since the 80s. It started out as a comedic series about martial arts with fun and interesting characters, and turned into a superpowered space epic with gods and aliens and shit. Because it's so old, it's a nostalgic series for multiple generations. The source material is simple-minded and wack and goofy, but at its best it's just a really fun series with great characters and (sometimes) really cool action.

  • @IxyCrystal
    @IxyCrystal ปีที่แล้ว

The list starts from Dragon Ball (1986) which is the prequel to Z and Super. About a young black spiky haired boy who goes on adventures and fights strong people whether it be bad or good guys. In Z (1989 sequel to Dragon Ball) its mostly all about the action. Goku is now an adult. To protect planet earth, his friends and family, he has to fight these (kind of) intergalactic alien beings. Who are trying to destroy the earth and humanity. The more of these enemies Goku has to fight, the stronger he gets which leads him to obtaining forms like Super Saiyan. (Blonde spiky hair and golden aura)
[Dragon Ball and DBZ came out in the west around the middle - late 90s iirc. ]
Dragon Ball Super (2015) is a sequel to Dragon Ball Z just takes place several years after. It's kinda the same as Z where Goku and his friends have to fight these intergalactic beings and he gets even stronger power-ups. (The blue hair you saw, was Goku in a super saiyan form he achieves in DB Super.) You reacted to the 2nd OP of Super which takes place in a tournament saga which was the final arc of Dragon Ball Super. Goku and friends fight different opponents from different universes, whichever universe wins can get a certain reward as an incentive.
Also to answer another question of yours.. Yes DBZ has a fair amount of dark moments like deaths etc..

Gonna note that the Dragonball series has 4 main anime so far (and a lot of movies):
-1st series just called Dragonball which covers Goku's adventures from when he was a 8 to 10 year old kid into adulthood (early 20s).
-2nd series called Dragonball Z which covers Goku and gang's adventures from his early 20s to roughly his 40s or so (he has a son that also gets to about age 18 to 20 by DBZ's end)
-3rd series called Dragonball GT which is now NO LONGER Cannon to the main series and covers a time of about 5 to 10 years after the end of DBZ. It became non cannon after Super was announced. I have no real clue why they decided to de-cannonize it tbh but will say most fans prefer DB Super over GT and had some complaints on GT's story which likely lead to said decision.
-4th series called Dragonball Super (current series) which more or less starts roughly 2 to 5 years after DBZ from what I can tell and replaces GT's storyline in the cannon with a drastically different plot/set of villains and all.
As for how hold it is the first Dragonball anime started airing in 1986 while the manga was started 2 years earlier in 1984...so yes it is easily one of the older anime out there and the art style of the original DB and DBZ anime is kinda on par with Cowboy Bepop in regards to how the coloring of the anime is and is easily one of the oldest usually active long running anime out there to date alongside Mobile Suit Gundam (which was made in the 1979). A few other anime may be as old/older but aren't active IPs anymore or only have been revived after a 20 or so year break of never being used (Astro Boy and Lupin III in particular come to mind for anime even older than Gundam). In fact Gundam and Dragonball could easily be considered to be part of the original big 3 of anime long before One Piece, Naruto, or Bleach released (current Big 3) and likely can easily match the 3 of them tbh.
All of these also have a bit over 100 episodes for each of the 4 DB series.
Oh...and on the off chance that your name is a hint that before anime/song reactions you were into video games the writer/manga artist of Dragonball, Akira Toriyama, is also the one that does the character and monster designs of ALL Dragon Quest games (probably one of the best video game franchises ever made) made by Square Enix (if you've ever played them many of the character designs are similar to the characters of Dragonball from the humans to the alien like races lol), on top of Dragon Quest he also did the designs for Chrono Trigger as well.

Dragon Ball is probably one of the more influential anime's of all time. It's probably one of the reasons anime got so popular in the 90s in a lot of countries, specially on Europe. It later came to States during late 90s, early 2000s and got really popular there as well.
There are 5 series (one being a remaster).
Dragon Ball (first series that covers the first 3rd of the manga.
Dragon Ball Z (covers the other 2 3rds of the manga)
Dragon Ball GT (an original anime set after Z, good ideas, bad execution)
Dragon Ball Kai (a condensed remaster of Z that avoids filler episodes)
Dragon Ball Super (new stories by the original author set in a time skip at the end of Z. The authot sets the plot and the anime stuff developes it)
The series is light hearted with some serious moments here and there. Plots are not complicated. However it still manages to be really good most of the time.

But for me the real banger is their insert song "Ultimate Battle" by Akira Kushida. This song played when Goku entered the Ultra Instinct state

It's hard to explain what DragonBall is about, because every series is different, and the tone changes depending on the Arc.
At its core it's about Goku & Friends going on a journey to collect the Mystical DragonBalls.
Its Age is pretty up there as well.
It's really old, but it is still on-going.
It has been on multiple really long breaks(after the original series ended there was no new anime content for over a decade), and spans across multiple Series and Movies.
This is by far the best opening, but you should definitely check out all of the openings(including the English Versions).
When watching the series I highly suggest starting with DragonBall(probably watch it on your own), then move onto DragonBall Z Kai(if you're watching it Subbed then normal DBZ is fine, but Kai does remove the majority of filler, and has better pacing), and end it off with DragonBall Super(the anime, then the 2 movies).
Between Arcs, or after DBZ there are non-canon movies you can watch, but they are unnecessary.
There's also the series DragonBall GT, which takes place after DBZ, but it is completely non-Canon to the story(don't let anyone tell you otherwise).
It's worth a watch, but is the weakest link of the franchise(it has some really cool moments, but overall isn't too great).

I use the word Canon, but it doesn't really apply to DragonBall(there are people in the community who hate discussing canon, while there's those who do it anyways(I fall in the middle of that)).
For DragonBall, and DragonBall Z/DBZ Kai there is technically a "canon"(both the anime, and manga are practically the same except for the addition of filler).
However for anything after DBZ Canon is thrown out the window(Toei Animation, and Akira Toriyama just kinda gave up, and/or don't really care).
DragonBall GT is an anime only series, so in terms of the main plot it's basically just a couple of filler Arcs, but formed into their own series.
DragonBall Super has a split continuity.
The Anime, and Manga follow the same overarching plot, and hit all the major story beats, but how they get there are in some cases drastically different.
On top of that the Anime has been off air for a couple years, while the Manga only just recently went on break(the Manga is currently 2 Arcs ahead of the Anime, but it'll be even further along by time tge Anime returns).
The DragonBall Super movies(opposed to the DragonBall, and DragonBall Z movies), are important to the narrative an connect the Manga, and Anime together(the events of the movies are "canon" to both unless the Anime readapts the Movies as Arcs, then the movies will just be "canon" to tge manga).

Dragon ball is loosely based on the novel "Saiyuki: the Journey West" and follows Son Goku and his friends as they search for the seven magical Dragon balls, which are rumored to summon a dragon who will grant a single wish. These show began in the 1980s and follows Akira Toriyama's previous series Dr. Slump. Like Dr. Slump, Dragon Ball started as more of a comedy, but eventually the show started to focus more on action. Dragonball Z covers the part of the series where Goku has grown up and had a child of his own. Dragonball GT was a sequel series that has pretty much been removed from continuity at this point, since Dragon Ball Super is more of an official continuation written with the original author's support.

Dragonball is made by Akira Toriyama and it debuted back in 1984 and ended in 1995. The entire manga is both bragon ball and dragon ball z. There are no distinction there like the anime version. It is widely considered to be one of the most influential show to make anime popular in the west during the 90s.
The show is about a young boy named Goku who is always looking to better himself in martial arts and has to fight against increasingly powerful enemies to get to that goal. That is the barebones premise but the manga paneling is great and Toriyama is known for his humor and gags on top of flying by the seat of his pants with his story. So, you get some crazy scenarios but they all kinda flow into one another too for a cohesive story.
Dragon ball super is an animated continuation of the story from 2015 all the way to 2018. It was later adapted into a manga by Toyotaro, a fan artist and assistant to Toriyama, which is still ongoing well past the end of the anime. The threat scale is so high now that Goku is pretty much dealing with gods and other equally powerful enemies in Super. The studio behind it, Toei, rushed its production so badly that ep 5 was memed to hell and back for how bad it looked. Also, the first 24 or so episodes are just worse animated recaps of the two movies they released in 2013 and 2014. But once the original arcs started, then the show started to look better. By the final arc, the focus of the op you reacted to, the show got a nice artstyle change and animated way better. The final 2 episodes were so hype it was shown on a giant screen outside in Mexico i believe.

11:20 so a quick explanation of the entire dragon ball timeline, first comes dragon ball then dragon ball z then just recently dragon ball super. There is also an anime called dragon ball gt but that story wasn’t created by the creator of the other 3 (creators name is Akira Toriyama) think of gt as a different universe
